Love it! You are so helpful! My daughter just quilted one of her tops and came up with about 2” extra... We ended up making small darts at seam lines and hand stitching them where they wouldn’t show the stitching thread... She was very pleased with the result and it was a great teaching moment about measuring the center of the quilt to cut the borders! Even better was the teaching moment of there always being more than one way to skin a rat!😜 Your soup can idea is a new one that I will put into my “toolbox “!

I just found your channel. I also have a Fusion. Are your leaders attached to your poles with Velcro? If yes, have you found that your leaders get a bit out of line? Have you ever removed and reattached your leaders? I’m going to look through all of your previous posts for more info. PS My first step in preparing a quilt to put on the long arm is to press it and measure it on a flat surface. I’m fortunate I have a ‘very old’ ironing board that is 54” by 18”. At what cruise speed do you use, I have the exact same machine, second hand and the lady selling it to me said to always run it slow, is this right?? Thank you for your most informative videos. An actual cruise speed would be really helpful.
@SederQuilts
@SederQuilts 2 года назад
🌸Oh boy! Excellent questions! I usually run with Cruise on 5%... and use the thumb button to start&stop frequently... so it’s almost like having Precision AND Cruise at the same time! Speed is a personal preference (and there are Oodles of good options!) Experiment with your speed... too fast is not good for many reasons, but waaay too slow is not always a whole lot better... you need to find YOUR Best Speed for the type of stitching YOU are doing. 🤓If we are concentrating on following ditches or appliqué edges, Slower is best... 🐌🐛🐌🐛🐌 💃But if we are in our happy place stitching big curvy flowers or a huge quick meander, the machine needs to be going Fast enough to Keep Up with YOUR rhythm!💃🎶💃🎶💃 You are so welcome! Question: will denser quilting still eat up extra fullness in the borders if you are not edge to edge with your design, but handling the borders separately? (So- dense quilting in the main area of the the quilt and separate handling of the borders.) or, do you need to have your quilting design flow over into the borders and treat the whole quilt as one piece? I hope that makes sense. I can try to clarify if it does not. You can let me know. Thank you so much for all the extra information you added into this video. It is extremely helpful to know what does not work, and I appreciate so much that you typically include that information, too! Hope you're having a great summer! I'm your neighbor! I'm right over here in Wisconsin! Thank you again!
@SederQuilts
@SederQuilts 6 лет назад
Brenda Wallgren 🌸Excellent questions! Yes, Denser Quilting anywhere will eat up more fullness... in a single area, or in random spots, or in just the borders. 🤓... so... if every thing is flat and square and even, and you do Dense Quilting in an area, that area will SCRUNCH up, making the areas near it appear wonky. 😎... this is one of the main reasons why my FIRST Online Quilting Class teaches you to STABILIZE, then add the important DETAILS, and finally add FILLS. 😉... this is why I Burp and Fluff with each advancement, to manage and minimize the wrinkles and crinkles that develop when stitching real fabric with thread (vs the planning on computer screens or graph paper). 💗... please Subscribe and Watch as many of my FREE Hundred Helpful Quilting Videos as possible... and purchase my Online Classes at SederQuilts.com ... I always wonder about fixing clients quilts, I see it as an opportunity for me to explain to them why they have too much fabric in their borders. I used to fix my clients quilts but I was getting too many with problems which meant I was spending too much un billable time on clients quilts.
@SederQuilts
@SederQuilts 5 лет назад
Kay Marl 🌸 I have found out the hard way that not everyone wants helpful hints... at least not right away... if you notice it right away, while the client is still there, you can ask casually ...or offer gently ...that you have a few tricks to make things appear their best... and then, depending on their response... and the degree of difficulty... you can offer a quick free tip (or inexpensive first lesson... now or another day) or ask if they want to undo and redo a border seam, or have you do it... etc... 🎉it might go better to have these chats after they already love your magical abilities 😉 Be a blessing and offer encouragement! That’s my motto!💗 Tutoluu!🌸

Since you are not attaching anything to the empty bar on the front, is there any reason you can’t just remove it?

Excellent question!! You may certainly remove the extra belly bar! (I keep mine handy underneath the frame most of the time.) I do really like to utilize that extra bar for Loading the Back Fabric with Leader Grips, so I get my exercise moving the bar up and down to the floor again. Do you ever use a good quality 100% cotton sheet for backing? would it shrink differently than the quilt top?
@SederQuilts
@SederQuilts 3 года назад
Excellent question!! I come from a utilitarian quilting background, so yes, I've used lots of sheets over the years. Nowadays I quilt for hire and use what the client brings. I certainly prefer quilt shop quality wide backs (108" wide), but there are oodles of good options. Thanks for watching!! Tutoluu!
@sandraeasthope3010
@sandraeasthope3010 5 лет назад
I have a question. What do you do when you know the quilt is straight to the frame and you baste down the sides to keep it square and get to the bottom and its longer on the ends than in the middle. You cant use channel locks to baste across the bottom so what do you do?
@SederQuilts
@SederQuilts 5 лет назад
Sandra Easthope 🌸Excellent question!🤓 As you advance the quilt each time, try to keep the piecing lines parallel to the belly bar. Often times, the bulk and lack of bulk will cause some uneven wind ups... the teensy slight difference will multiply with each advancement, but you might not notice till the end... If you keep each row as straight as possible (not perfect, but as happy as possible)... and encourage the fullness to go where you want it to be... with “patty-cake,” and “frosting on a hot cake” (those are technical terms😉 for “loving it into place”) ... you won’t end up with all of it at the end. I have a very helpful class “Fullness into Fabulous” at SederQuilts.com (on the second page of classes) full of tricks to utilize and minimize the wonkyness that appears with real fabric on a Longarm frame. 🌸 Thanks for watching, asking, and sharing SederQuilts! 💗Tutoluu!😎

Every time that I have tried to float a quilt the center of the quilt has pulled in at the center. I very carefully straighten the quilt and stitch the edges down as I roll the quilt. However at the end the center of the quilt is bowed in too much to suit my OCD. The quilt lays flat, everything looks good until I get toward the bottom. Again, I feel that I am not stretching but fluffing the quilt quite nicely as I go so I can't figure out what it is that I am not doing. Have any ideas?
@SederQuilts

marsha ryan 🤓My first recommendation is to watch the horizontal lines of the Quilt in relationship to the belly bar... usually the borders need to be pushed towards the back just a tad as you go. Often has to do with the bulk and lack of bulk (of seams in the pieced body. and the empty sides of the back fabric)... and the tightness of the wind up on the back bar... add in even the slightest fullness or stretch of the borders (or saving the border stitching to be turned) and it all shows up at the end with a tight center. 🤓The stitch scrunch of a dense design also exasperates (or is the correct word exaggerates? ) this situation ... 🤓The third possibly is pulling things too tight.

Great information: how about a quilt with 8 - 12 points coming into one space which makes a nice hump and it is a stack and whack? How would you quilt it and handle it?
@SederQuilts

Beverly Herren 🤓excellent question! Oodles of Option... press the points as creatively as necessary and as flat as possible... 😳whack it with a fabric wrapped 2x4 ... use a design with an open center... don’t try to stitch into that thick mess and break a needle or throw off the timing of your machine. 🎉I will put your question on our “videos to do” list... so watch for that in the future.... if I don’t get that type of quilt top in, I’ll try to make a few orphan blocks for examples 😉 Thanks so much for the great idea! See you soon! Tutoluu 🌸

My question is -What on earth is on your handle grips? They look like gloves! Do they help you quilt in some way?
@frekybyrd
@frekybyrd 6 лет назад
Wow! I might do that too! My grips are a foam rubbery stuff and when I quilt for a long time, my hands feel tacky. Thanks for the tip and quick response! Love your videos,keep on quilting.

Please move your scissors. They hang over what you are demonstrating! Thanks. I have a snap off that I hang around my neck!!

cindy skaggs 🤓Yes, those silly scissors! I’ve moved them a few times, and I have several others within reach, but I miss them terribly when they aren’t there! I’ve been trying to remember to tuck them into the handle socks so they don’t dangle in the way during filming. Thank you for reminding me. I will try to be better... There’s always room for improvement and I appreciate your suggestions!🌸

Thanks for getting back to me. Can't wait to see how you square up a quilt that is not square.

Pam Shirley I often put it on the ceramic floor... to see how poofy or gathered or ruffled or wonky it is. 😉That’s my first step.🌸

Pam Shirley load the worst side first. Deal with it right away. Gather it in a bit... (ease it in) soup cans ... draw the correct side boundaries... or use painters tape on the belly bar... spray water, steam, starch, steam... love it into place... pin it like gathering a ruffle... use piano keys... Or stretch it ever so slightly... use water and stretch it a bit with the iron. There are tricks to make it slightly more square than it is. Or... do the best you can to work with it as is. Let it be happy and wonky... Breathe and enjoy. Pretend it was pieced by your 7 year old grand child. Or your 103 year old granny. Love it. Cherish it. Finish it. Be thankful you don’t have three in a row like that. 😊🌸💗

Your video was very informative , but your talking so much with your hands drove me cracy. Maybe you could do a little less with your hands.

Louise Hughes 🌸 Yes! I DO talk with my hands! 👐 My husband has always said, “If you want her to be quiet, just hold her hands!” 😂 I might be able to do a little less with my hands, but probably not. Thanks for the suggestion! 🌸Tutoluu!
