In the Philippines, You don't need to go to recruiting agency unless opt to be a contractual, you came from a different country or work to other countries. I was a direct hire so I'm not knowledgeale with recruitment agency. I'm interested in working Japan as a Programmer though.

It's super helpful knowing that there are options other than teaching. I'm in university right now, and I declared a Teaching English as a Second Language minor to try to prepare for applying to JET. Unfortunately, I learned that while I was comfortable tutoring I hated teaching in a claasroom! I panicked and thought I'll never get to Japan now, but maybe now there are other options I just have to work really hard to find them
@3:50 Talking about how as a worker you stick with one company your whole working life. TC talk just touched on one side of the coin. Japanese company, traditionally do not fire workers. Once they hire a person it is for "life". For a worker, this is a career security in a way. The usual reason a Japanese company would fire a worker, is because of serious offenses like breaking the law or something equally serious. Due to this career security, workers do not normally change jobs, unless the company was really treating them badly. The point I am trying to make is that, with the western company culture influencing Japanese company more, I am afraid that the "career security" that we have in Japan might disappear and companies would terminate people anytime they want, when they want.
I'm not sure if most Japanese companies have labor unions like there are in the west, but if you are worried, you should see if there are any laws in Japan that protect workers from unfair dismissal.
@@MrRookitty What I have heard is that the traditional companies do not dismiss workers. I think they have some sort of labor union, maybe it is a group with a different role. I know that they would suggest to the government how much pay rise workers should get annually. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I’m interested to know more about these new visa categories, and what types of people might now be eligible to live and work in Japan. I missed my chance to transition from my working holiday, and the best I can do on a tourist visa are clinical trials. I’m working on all the English teaching angles, but would love to try different avenues.
After a year in the workforce in the US as a junior web developer, I've found an oppourtunity in Tokyo that starts in July as a programmer at a 'temp agency' if sorts where I'm paid by this one company to work 3 month contracts at other companies. My goal is to get hired full-time by one of the companies I temped for after the initial one year contract, or ideally get hired on by a US tech giant in Japan. The サラリマン culture scares me. I'm also scared because I've been to Japan, but I studied Japanese as my minor at university and I've been self-studying since graduation. Also, I found this opportunity through Daijob or Gaijinpot, if that helps anybody.
What's the paid leave situation like in Japan? Currently here in Australia you get 4weeks of paid leave per year. And some companies (mostly government, but some private companies too) have something called Long Service Leave. If you've been with the company for a number of years (10years I think it is nowadays), on that 10th year of being with the company, you get an additional 13weeks of paid leave on top of your regular 4weeks. That's 17weeks of paid leave.

Aside from programs like JET and such, if it's easier to get an english teaching job once you're in japan, and you need to have a job lined up to help get a working visa and a place to live, how would one go about dealing with this catch 22 situation? I live in the US, and we don't have the same types of visa opportunities (as far as I know) as the UK or Australia etc.... I'm really interested in coming to live and teach in Japan, but have been finding that situation difficult, though I'm sure there's information out there I haven't found yet that would be helpful. Thanks.
You have a couple options. 1. Like they mentioned in the video, there are people who come to Japan on Holiday Visas to look for a job. It's technically not legal to do so, but many people do it. You have to be very careful and do your research if a company wants to hire you. Mainly just make sure they're actually going to sponsor your work visa. 2. There are private dispatch companies that recruit abroad. The most popular being JET which is the government program. It's very competitive and a bit of a lottery at times. There are other companies that hire masses like INTERAC or AEON. They're not ideal jobs, but they are great ways to enter the country. During your first contract, you can search for a better job since you now have your work visa out of the way at that point. Hope this helps!
There are also tons of websites that allow you to look for Jobs in Japan while outside of Japan like JobsinJapan and GaijinPot. Won't find a ton of jobs not related to teaching English though. The job market is different for foriengers, which is why they can find jobs online instead of via recruiters.
I have come on a student visa because I really want to learn Japanese for professional and personal reasons. My student visa allows for part-time work, which I have. The part-time job doesn't interfere with study or even free time really. I have set 3 outcomes for the end of one year: Keep studying Japanese to reach N2+ here, Return home and go back with more skills for my profession, stay in Japan and convert to a professional.

However, I have a question for you guys, what happens AFTER you've been in Japan for years working (and are a foreigner) and you want to retire in Japan, is it possible for foreigners to retire in Japan? Or would they have to move back to their own country of origin for retirement? I know most of us aren't of the age of retirement just yet, but I got curious about what the answer would be!
