How do you non-affiliate scan on a BK radio? KNG-P800 & BKR9000 NAS made easy with the same program

I initially bought an APX8000 hoping to listen to my local trunked system, but learned the hard way that Motorola didn't non-affiliate scan easily. Sure, there are work-arounds, but they are complicated and need old sketchy key software. I was on the Radio Reference forums trying to learn how to do NAS when I came across forums touting the KNG-P800. I happened to find one on eBay, and since I already had a P150, I figured it would be an easy learning curve.
It wasn't quite as easy as I had hoped, but after learning a few lessons I hope your experiences are better than my first few tries.
Thanks to all the guys on Radio Reference forums for their help.

@@Manumave honestly, buy used one that doesn’t have a scratched display. The term refurbished means it simply is the same radio in a brand new plastic case. Incidentally, what band are you looking for? VHF, UHF, or 7-800?

the button to create a trunking system in res is disabled in mine. How do i solve that?

Have you found an easy way to set site preferences when in RX only? The system I'm listening to is simulcast, but not every TG is broadcast from every site.

Hi Matt I have just one question thats bothering me. I got my BKR9000 yesterday and it looks great. I thought I followed the programming instructions, but every system sounds a signal as (out. of. range). in NAS. I can receive the weather band no problem. Do I need to fill in the field such Channel-ID, Unit-ID also?? I am well in range of a P-25 trunk system, I used RES instead of Excel, any thoughts??

Do you mind posting what system you’re trying to NAS? One of the big problems originally for me was control channels. I’d have to go through my notes again, but it does take a few steps to make it all work, and if any one of them isn’t done according to the specs, it doesn’t work. Are you sure it’s a phase 2 p25 system?

@@AdventureCruiser It's a Denver PD P-25 system in Colo I download from Radio Ref , BUT, I only entered the amb TG's, not PD. I tried: sys-ID, wacn, rfss, home site, full spec scan, control chan's. In RES also (selected/added) channel ID & TDMA, many changes in the past 23-hours, also tried a NAC. Thats my story. I noticed in L.A. the PD used C4FM mode but in add'l options, CQPSK can not be changed. One day I will get it going, still love the radio. Amos

@@tdhmoose the BKR9000 does, but not the p800. You would want the p500 if you want single band.

Instead of importing the system, consider just importing the list set into System 2.

That would work if I didn’t also need the control channels. I’m pretty sure those are included in the system itself self.

@@Jacob-mm8xq yes, the signal strength behaves just as if it were affiliated. If you are beyond range, it will tell you as well.

I bought mine from 49er communications, but there are others too that do great work. Vincent Communications and King Communications are others that I’ve worked with.
