Some high end head units also do the 3-way active setups (some even 4-way). My Pioneer DEH-80PRS does 3-way active, has a very sophisticated crossover network built-in, so there's no need for any external processor.
the 80 prs crossover points suck, very limited range. I leave mines on standard mode and cross over on amps, i get much better sound that way due to flexible crossover points.
big d thats what i kinda just asked on here...i know if just replacing Factory speakers and just maintaining the typical component setup i know you can use headunits active c/o but lets say im running rca's to mulitple 4channels and lots of mids and highs does the headunit at that point still know how to crossover the frequency and send it to the appropriate speakers? or would i need an exteranl active/passive c/o at that point...?
BigD! I love your amp dyno videos. I still rock a similar Pioneer Premier DEH-980BT with all the fancy auto-eq, timing alignment and BBE, and DSP. BTW, Sonic Electronix, DSP stands for Digital Signal Processing, not digital Sound processing. DSP takes an audio signal while it's in a digital format, e.g. 1s & 0s, discrete samples then processes it (crossover, timing alignment, eq, lpf, hpf, etc) on a digital processor or DSP Chip using math (multiplying the audio sample train against your filter coefficient train and adding them up to get your next output sample), and it does this for EVERY sample or 44,100 times per second. I'm an electrical engineer with master's degree in digital signal processing. For my senior project I took a 7.1 surround sound receiver and found the schematic for it and intercepted and hijacked the digital signal samples right before the digital to analog converter and I told those digital samples into a DSP chip (actually an FPGA), where I decoded the I2C codec filtered it using a 256 point FIR filter, then encoded back into an audio bitstream and fed the bi-amped data back to the DSP card on the surround sound receiver but borrowed one of the extra surround channels as my new amplifier chain and turned it into front High and front low. So I used DSP to do bi amping and turned a 7.1 surround sound receiver into 5.1 biamp surround sound receiver. And the magic sauce to all of this was that with DSP I was able to achieve LINEAR PHASE! It sounded beautiful!

@@SonicElectronix Got a question for you guys. Amps-- 1St D-4.800 for my front components . 2nd LC-4.800 for my rear speakers. 3rd LC-1.800 Subwoofer Speakers-- Single JL audio 12w6v3 in a ported custom box Front speakers MLK 165.3 Components from hertz - Rear speakers MPX 165.3 - Head unit-- Kenwood DMX 907s, My question is what crossover you recommend for my current set up ? I want to go active on the front but I'm kind of confuse where I should set the crossover for my woofers and my tweeters. also what crossover you recommend for my rears ? sub currently is sitting at 80 hz .... thank you in advance .
Thanks for the video. I am hoping someone will mention whether I should send full signal from an amp to components speakers running with passive crossover. Or, should I set to x1 to add extra level of protection for the mid range from low frequencies?
I have recently upgraded my car audio system with an 8 channel DSP, 5 channel Amp, 2 pairs of component speakers and a subwoofer. I feel that the crossovers of mid bass and tweeters are not communicating well with the DSP setup. Questions:- Is there a way to properly "sync" DSP with component cross overs? If not, is it possible to convert component speakers to active speakers? Can the DSP and 5 channel amp drive all 2 pairs of speakers active or only 2 pairs? I am okay to go for a two channel amp for the rear speakers if that is the best option. When we use this additional amp, can I get the DSP drive those two pairs of speakers? Thank you George Thomas
Thanks for a Great vid ! I hadn’t heard of a “times 10 multiplier” until today. It’s not something often seen in basic specs on product listings. Could you please give (us) a handful of Amp examples that have this feature ?
Have a really simple question if I have components that include cross overs do I need to mount it to the door to be connected near the mids or can I mount them in the rear of my trunk with the rest of my system?
Hi Brendan and Allyn, I am a novice and have installed the following systems in my car. Kicker front row ZXDSP1 6 channel digital sound processor, Powerbass 4 channel amplifier ACA480 - 4. JBL GT5 - A3001 mono bloc amplifier, 2 pairs of Sony XS - GS1720 Two-way speakers and A DIY 12 inch. Sub-woofer. However I’m not getting the best sounds because I think I haven’t calibrated the amplifiers well and have already blown the rear right speaker. I’m planning to get the SMD DD -1 + CC - 1 Combo to accomplish the task. Can you please tell me which crossover frequencies to use in order to obtain the cleanest and smooth sound without any frequency drop-outs? What frequencies and decibels should I run through the front, rear and subwoofer? I listen to all types of music depending on mood. Samuel (from Ghana).
Soooo i have a five channel amp connected to 4 comp speakers with passive xover, What should i set the speaker xover too? if i turn the limit off will the passive take care of it?
Great video. I have a question. My Kenwood Excelon head unit has an active crossover and dta. If I use my 4 channel amp(Memphis PRX300.4) and wire the components I have to run active, can I just set up the crossover on my head unit and run the amp on hpf or should I set it to full ? It doesn't have the 10x multiplier or bandpass. It only has lpf, full, hpf
thanks for the video and info! say if you setting crossovers with dsp, do you still need to set them on the amplifier or do you just leave it a full pass ?
It seems like everywhere I look people are still using aftermarket head units as the example. More and more vehicles including the less expensive economy sedans are coming from the factory with some sort of integrated display panel that cannot be replaced with a classic single/double DIN stereo. I'm just curious when this is be addressed more by the car audio industry and be featured in more car audio content.
I'm eager to see where aftermarket audio will fit in with the newer infotainment systems as well. I am very interested in how Bluetooth capable amplifiers will develop going forward. Imagine an amp that you connect to your phone for BT audio source and also DSP features! Could be very cool. Adding an amp (and swapping speakers in) to the newer vehicles with dashboards averse to DIN standards would be a solid solution IMO. I have heard that wireless audio sourcing is always inferior to wired though. D:
This video explained a lot. but I do have a question when using a passive xover with a amp that has lp/ap/hp setting do I just set it to all pass and let the passive xover control the frequency? Thank you in advance for you help. Keep up the great videos
Should have mentioned Bi-amping to be able to use proper Time Alignment with passives. Also there are decks out that can do active. These small class D amps these days are the Bomb... I am an SQ guy and even I like some of the Class D amps like the ARC 1200.6 or MMATS 6150D. Great for a 2-way plus sub active setup.
Hi Sir. Thank you so much for posting the video. Please advise. I can't get my subwoofer to produce 20Hz bass; it still has punchy bass, which I don't want. Should I use an aftermarket cross over like "boss" to get the 20Hz wavy bass? I have a 12 inch, 2000watt Pioneer sub in ported box (responsive to 20Hz) with a dedicated Pioneer mono block 1000Hz amp in my car. The remaining midranges and tweeters each have their own 6 channel pioneer amplifier. Finally, I have a graphic equalizer. Please advise, sir, if I should get a cross over I, and tune it to 20zHz ? I have tried using several graphic equalizers, but none of them had a 20Hz bass knob to enable this kind of bas.s P lease advise, Thanks.
Hi sir, I have a 5.1 home theater but it lacks high frequency sound that's why i cant understand the dialog of the movies im watching, even when i'm listening to music i can barely hear the cymbals or the "S" sound from the song... i replaced the center speaker with a tweeter and nothing happens even the treble is turned way up...is there any solution to this? thanks in advance
So if I have a passive crossover network do I still control where the hertz range begins and ends? The factory crosssover only sets the hz range where the mid ranges and tweeters cross correct? It doesn't control where they begin and end does it?
Someone help, a while back before upgrading stock speakers i put in a 12 inch pioneer with a 1,200-1,400 watt mono amp. now that i have the component set of speakers am i gonna need to install another amp for the speaker? (my stock car audio system also comes with stock tweeters)
I was thinking of getting a 5 channel and bridging 1 and 2 for one speaker and then 3and 4 for the other. Or would it be better to just go active instead?
I want to say thank you Chino for this very informative video on crossovers. While I learned a fair bit more about these potentials from your info, I also find myself a bit more lost in this. I am working on my system that will have three ways to do crossover and now I am not sure which way will be best. The head has capability to do either 'active' or 'standard', active offering in-deck crossover shaping. The amplifier, (a 5 channel), has full crossover built in too...and the components have their own passive external crossovers as well. I didn't realize that passive crossovers ate up so much power so I am just going to not use them. That leaves me with the HU active capability and the amplifier's built-in x-over. I am not sure which is the better way to go about it! :/ If I use the amplifier crossover, I will still have to use the passive x-overs because I would need 4 channels for a pair of components...but tweeters don't need all that much power. :/ This stuff gets complicated fast!
Maybe I could just use the passive component x-overs just for the tweeters in parallel with the amplifier x-over set for the 6.5s? Things were simpler in years passed, but maybe not as good quality sound? I dunno... I will say that the dollar per usable watt ratio is a whole hell of a lot better now than it used to be!
So on making the switch on an advertised 100 watt rms component set, the mids and tweets don't require the same rms. Is it best to use two separate amps? one two channel with lower rms for the tweets and one two channel with higher output for the mids? I had one 100 x4 amp on a 100w comp set, went active and blew the tweets
Hey Sonic Electronix, i just wondering do i need 4 chanel amp or after maker pioneer head unit are enought for pair of 6-1/2" 2-Way passive Component speaker system with 70 wrms each midwoofer and tweeter.? Thanks.
so if im piecing together multiple mids and highs (w/o passive crossovers) does this not allow me to use the crossover in my pioneer headunit since i will be using rca to external amps and whatnot
So if your running and eight speaker system and six of them are co-axle separate wolf or Twitter or even all eight or like that you’re good at them to DSP units in the world to run that correct?
Hey guys, I have a question about built in crossovers. I have infinity kappas that I haven't installed yet and they have built in crossovers supposedly but there's no adjustments that can be made. Should I run them on an amp? And does this crossover actually do anything?
how can i make my ride sound nice with out the factory wires what i need for door speakers back windshield speakers and two pair of tweeters front and back i have two 10" audiobahn and 200 watts alpine amp any ideas thank you
I recently purchased the NVX JAD900.5 and the PPI P65c3 from Sonic. Does it make sense to run the amp in bridge mode and have the PPIs running bridged or switch to 4 channel mode, take the woofers off the passive crossover and on the amp's rear channel, with the mids and tweets still on the passive crossover using the front channel? The head unit is a Pioneer AVH-X4800. Thanks!
so would it be a bad idea to overpower a passive system? especially if youre not sure how much power is being lost ex: system is rated 60wrms would 100wrms be too much?
Very infomative vid. I would appreciate if u can do a vid on the px2 by expert electronics if possible. I have learned alot from watching your vids among others who explain the pro's an con's of car audio equipment. Thanks a bunch an keep up the good job.
Im having whining noise issue through my audison bit one. I checked everything and got new wires and replaced ground points and still getting that whining. I ran amps without dsp and no noise. But when i ran the amps with audison dsp whining noise came back. Anyone that can help would be appreciated.
Can you use a passive crossover with a 4 channel amp? For example i have a chevy truck with bose system. I'm wanting to replace the bose amp and speakers with an aftermarket amp and component speaker setup.
Jesus Zuniga yes you can. You will only use 2 of the 4 channels that way unless you "bridge" the 4 channels into 2 channels for more power. All depends how powerful the amp is and how much power the speakers can take
hello I wanted to see if you can help me out I have a Pioneer radio and I want to connect a pioneer Gm d 1004 amplifier I don't know should use the RCA output or I use the speaker wires coming out from the radio to the amplifier
hello I have a JVC car stereo KD-R416 which powers 50W*4 speakers A box with dimensions; Height = 30.5 inches (77cms) Width = 14.5 inches (37.4cms) Depth = 11.6 inches (30cms) board thickness 0.5 inches Please suggest woofer/sub-woofer size and wattage. tweeter size and wattage. Also crossover network active or passive. thanks in advance.
I’m running an amp it’s for channel can parallel it and give you eight speakers I want to run his many components because I can include paralleling them using a digital processor for the crossover how do I hook my tweeters in the Woofers up and be able to use the digital sound processor to separate them and filter the amp r can it hook them up tweeter and woofer channel 1 left and tweeter and woofer Channel 2 and use digital sound processor crossover high and low to adjust them?
I have a 2001 grand caravan I ran a trigger wire to my premium sound relay but everytime I turn it up the speakers cut out is there any tips to stop the problem the radio is a daul 7in flip screen any help please so annoying
If you are using a two-band front that is midbass and tweeter crossover or any filters on the amplifier is not needed. If you are using a Pioneer head unit in Network mode you can cut the required frequency of your head unit of the fourth order. It is very good. But if you are using a three-band front need filters and the amplifier too.
+Vladimir Buzhinskiy I am doing a 2 band front with a subwoofer. Pioneer's audio processor (network mode) has crossovers for high, mid, and low. So I should be good, right?
+Joshua's Recordings Absolutely, Pioneer head unit processor in a network mode will allow you to unlock the full potential of your speakers. The most important thing you need to understand how to cut all frequencies from your Pioneer. And please be very careful because if not set correctly, you can burn the coils of your speakers.
+Vladimir Buzhinskiy Yes, I know plenty about crossovers and burning out speakers (I actually do that for fun to crappy speakers now and then). I can't wait to get this system all set up! I am going with the Pioneer AVH-5800BHS headunit, Polk Audio MM6501 speakers, Alpine PDX-9V amp, and a Rockford Fosgate P3D4 12 subwoofer in a sealed box (and of course a 4 gauge amp wiring kit. What do you think? Any suggestions?
Joseph Wright if you have to ask that question then you should definitely just get a component set. It's gonna keep all your frequencies the same and probably be cheaper. There's no reason to go "a la carte" unless you are getting VERY technical with a dsp and have an RTA to tune it properly.
GREAT VIDEO....IM USING CAR SPEAKERS TO BUILD MY HOMETHEATER\MUSIC ROOM SPEAKERS...CAN I USE PASSIVE CROSSOVERS ON THIS SETUP.?....HELLO FROM CANADA..THANKS
So say for example my Infinity reference 6.5 comps. It states they are 90w rms. So my amp can do 55 rms per channel. But 130rms bridged. Would I be better off going bridged and still be pretty safe as say 40% of that 130rms amp power is not getting through? As opposed to only giving them 30rms from the single channel mode.
So just wondering here, I see you used a typical class d 4 channel amp as an example to run both the tweeters and the mids. You may want to mention rms (watts) and matching your components rating to the amp. Think the last thing you want to do is have someone wire up their 4 channel 100 watt rms amp to a 75 watt rms mid and a 25 watt rms tweeter as an example
rlisi54 one 4 channel amp can run one or two sets of components depending on the power the amp supplies and the power the speakers need. To run just one set of components (1 mid& 1 tweeter) you would bridge 4 of the channels on the amp down to only a 2 channel amp to double the power given to the speakers. But only do that if say it's a weak 4 channel amp and you have good speakers that can take 75 to 100+ watts. Hope that helps
I need someone to completely dumb it down for me and explain it like I’m a 10 year old because I still don’t get it at all…AND I’m trying to get MECP certified and I still don’t get it😓
I gotta jbl 4ch 804-ez 940w on 4 6.5" jbl gto components I plan on doubling my 6.5"s for midrange I will have like 10 tweaters & maybe 2 of those copper crescendo's if I can get my hands on em... for the a pillers...I have alot of amps laying around couple ALPiNE's like the T220.2 with hi/low pass /a 600w 4ch alpine & a M450.2 but I don't care about those last two to much I was planning on just buying either massive 6.5 component's or midrange's like neopro type but not sure....input welcome !!!
check out the mosconi gladen 6 to 8. Unbeateble price and bether features than the rockford 3sixty and the bit 10. You can choose your own frequency and alter it.
No one pointed out that he originally said the question came from Facebook but then the title card for the question ended up saying the question was from RU-vid
Drew Busch They're out of stock but you can have them email you when they get stock in. You just go to the package you want and down towards the bottom is a link to sign up for an email notification.
hey sonic electronics my name is NACER and i am an installator from ALGERIA and i want to know if i can use the 6/9 speaker SONY500 watt with amplifier 1000watt 2channel THANKS .
u keep saying u need a 4 channel u realy dont i have a 2 channel an have 4 speakers hook up an its been running for 4 years active all day all the way i am not saying ur wrong everything elese u said was good👍
