Good advice! I wasn’t freezing the basil with oil. It turned black. I’ll try this soon so I’ll have basil for all those holiday dishes 😊

It would be nice if you show a closeup of the final product from the processor so we know how fine to chop it and how much oil to put in so that it can be easy to take out "a piece,". Do you break off the ice to get a piece?
@natalinasflavoursofItaly
@natalinasflavoursofItaly 2 года назад
How fine you chop it is personal preference...some like to make a paste, very finely chopped...others just a rough chop. The oil protects it from freezer burn so just enough to coat it. There are no exact measurements because when you have leftover basil you won't always have the exact same amount.
@NubianP6
@NubianP6 2 года назад
@TGC, I would have loved to see the final product too. Maybe if you store it in the bag flat, it would be easier to break pieces off, as opposed to storing it in a clump? 🤷🏽‍♀️

This is great. My local market sells huge bunches of basil and I don't buy every time as I cry when it goes bad before I use same. Now I can freeze it. Thank you, Natalina, I have once again learnt something new.

I like to add walnuts, lemon juice and salt. Or sometimes I'll put cilantro in with the basil too. Next on my list is to add a tomato, that's one I have not tried yet.

What about having ice cube trays just for something this this and when you need the herb you just get a cube out of the plastic bag……maybe a silicone ice cube tray with a lid!!!!!????? Do they make something like that?🤷🏻‍♀️ that would keep the cubes even fresher and no freezer burn 🤷🏻‍♀️I know this is not my original idea……I remember reading it from someone else…….and I haven’t read all the comments so maybe someone else already posted this idea……. I just came across your site and I think I’ll like your Italian cooking since I’m half Italian and love to cook and bake even though I’m getting up there in age and slowing down a bit 😂😂😂👵🏻😅❤ I subscribed……. Update: Yes someone else did suggest the ice cube trays…….and now that I think about, if you put the mixture in a freezer bag, and flatten it out, maybe once it freezes it will stay flat and take up less room than ice cubes????????? And as you said Nat, you just break off what you want to use…….

I have done ice cubs before... this is just quicker and you can choose how much or little you wish! Thanks for subscribing!

when you store the smaller leaves in the fridge do you take the stems off?
@natalinasflavoursofItaly
@natalinasflavoursofItaly 3 года назад
The stems on the small leaves are tender so I use them as well...only the coarse stems are tough.
@jennifersteeves5482
@jennifersteeves5482 Год назад
You can actually get the stems and break them up and put them in a glass jar… Fill the jar with oil over top of the stems… Let it sit about a week maybe two weeks… You can strain out the stems… You’ll have a basil flavoured oil for cooking

Can you use freezer bags
@natalinasflavoursofItaly
@natalinasflavoursofItaly 2 года назад
Yes... that's exactly what I use...just make sure you remove as much air as possible before sealing. Less likely to get freezer burn that way.

Would it freeze well in a mason jar?
@natalinasflavoursofItaly
@natalinasflavoursofItaly Год назад
You would have to thaw it to get it out. A freezer bag is better ...smooth it out in the bag. When frozen break off pieces.

Ok...what am I doing wrong....first timer here...got a small pot from the Nursery with 6 stems in it. After 2 weeks repotted the WHOLE plant in an 8 inches high pot. Some video suggested to cut the Coteyledons and I did and now ALL 6 stems are about 9 inches high, bare looking and so stiff and lifeless! All leaves are bitter to taste...as I didn't cut the flowers at the right time.....shall I replant the 6 stems in 6 DIFFERENT pots or throw them out? Cheers from Toronto....

I am on a whole food plant based lifestyle and don’t use any oils. Can I use water instead of oil to accomplish the same end?
@natalinasflavoursofItaly
@natalinasflavoursofItaly 3 года назад
Oil protects the basil from freezer burn...water would create ice crystals and reduce the length of time it will keep in the freezer. Olive oil is plant based,just the juice from olives really...
