An acid test is any qualitative chemical or metallurgical assay which uses acid; most commonly, and historically, the use of a strong acid to distinguish gold from base metals. Figuratively, acid test is any definitive test for some attribute or of the performance of some product.
The traditional acid test for gold consists of placing a small drop of a strong acid, such as nitric acid, onto the metal's surface. Most metals fizz or bubble, while precious metals remain unaffected. The acid test is thus decisive, immediate, cheap and simple to perform.

i work for a gold company were we buy gold. both we do not use the scratch stone. evryone is starting to use what we call a FILE AND SOLUTION TEST.. were we file into the peice then test with the acid bc the stone only tests the outer part as the file test gets in the peice and can really tell if it is legit gold or not. how can we tell the differences in the reactions by doing this???

Do those shadows after the acid every go away ? if you decide you do not want to sell it for scrap does it damage the item for good? thankyou

Hello. I have a 14k ring and apply the tester direct to the ring only a little bit though. And the ring got has a little stain now is it real or fake??

i went to jewelry store today and they test my jewelry and they said it is 14k but how do I know that it is not 18k if they only test 14k acid test?

Nitric Acid for 9k, Nitric Acid & Hydrochloride Acid for 18k.

@Skyethur As a general rule every jeweler is a thief. What is your item marked? If you want to message me I can tell you what any mark means. If you have gold for sell go buy a digital scale for around $10 and sell it on ebay. It will bring the same money that they jewelers could get from their melters if you list it right.
