How Do You Wear a Dirk with Formal Highland Dress?

The most famous weapon of the Highlanders is the broadsword (both the Claymore two-handed variety and the basket-hilted broadsword). Second most famous may be the Sgian Dubh - the small “black knife” today worn mostly for looks peeking out of your kilt hose. The Scottish Dirk is of course the third and is still a standard uniform piece for many bagpipers and honor guards.
But how do you wear the dirk with modern civilian Highland dress? The dirk is a very long dagger usually hung on a loop from the kilt belt. It can be clumsy to wear with an Argyll jacket and vest, or the classic Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat. This has not prevented men from wearing a dirk for a special occasion like a Celtic wedding.
Rocky and Erik go over why it is problematic and offer some suggestions. Fair warning - the best ways to do this are also the most expensive.

Dirk I only see occasionally on military band uniforms. Here in Scotland the legality of wearing Dirk is dubious. Scottish legislation aimed at curbing knife-crime imposes restrictions on sale of blades longer than 3.5 inches to the public. Similarly, there are laws in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and some countries around the world which may impose compliance or licence conditions on seller or buyer

In the UK Dirks are worn by pipers in military bands but thats about it. There is legislation preventing the carrying of items made to cause injury, the sole purpose of the Dirk. In addition there are restrictions on the carrying (with exceptions) of bladed or sharply pointed instruments. Churches usually prohibit the carrying of any weapon. In the UK the carrying of sgain dubh whilst in full highland dress is one of the exceptions. So if you're planning to come to the UK for a wedding leave the Dirk at home. In the USA legislation is going to different.

+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for pointers on carriage of the **_Durgh._* The Montrose and _Caenh mòr_ are historical styles consistent with the Stateside-born mid-20th-century "Ike Jacket" (after the late President Dwight D. Eisenhower as a general officer in the U. S. Army). The requirements for a dagger-scabbard hanger are consistent with (but not identical to) those for a police or sheriff duty-pistol holster w/r/t provisions for jackets. OtOH, the _Sgian_ being useful as a substitute for a pen knife, I'll see whether I can incorporate a sheath for COLD STEEL® C/N 11SDT ("Secret Edge," 6½" OAL/3½" sharp) into the rear of a day _Sporran._

Traditionally the groomsmen of Honor is supposed to wear a sword anyway because he is the "best man" Meaning if somebody stands up in protest to the wedding your best man must fight that person for your honor that's the name groomsmen of Honor

As a descendant of the Royal Champions of England: yes, delegate the sword to your best man. As a groom or master of the event, you have enough clout to have a champion for the day.

I wear my dirk to the side of my sporan, on the inner front of my left thigh. It reduces interference with jackets, and allows for a draw with either hand, making it more sensible when worn with a sword.

Could not the sporran accommodate a sgian dubh? I do not mean inside but clipped to it.

Bayonets employ a frog, trying to picture a sword using a frog, I've never seen one on a sword, the damn thing would be dragging on the ground.

Was at a wedding where a cake was temporarily substituted for the REAL cake. It looked identical to the real cake, but was actually solid hard wood. Only a claymore and a strong dude had a chance at cutting it! After a couple “feeble” attempts at cutting it, the real cake was rolled in.😊

Personally, I would only wear a dirk with a Great kilt, although there are some photographs of me in a ghillie shirt, leather waistcoat and some home-made kit items. Would not wear a dirk with a kilt and modern jacket.

Ref UK. Anyone advise the legislation for wearing dirk as a solo piper performing at say, a wedding or funeral in number 1 uniform?

At an organised event, as part of a specific outfit, it could be argued as 'good reason' in the eyes of the law. To additionally cover yourself in case you encounter a jobworth trying to make a name for themselves, it would also be worth peace bonding it - tie the hilt to the sheath in such a way as it cannot be readily drawn. I have done this in the past with swords as part of an outfit and discussed it with police I encountered en route. (when I saw them eyeing it up, I went to them!). "If we get a call saying there's a bloke with a sword, the first questions are where and what does he look like? When the answer is 'He is at a halloween party and he looks like a pirate' unless you are waving around an open blade it'll be fine"

Wearing a dirk it completely legal in Scotland because there is a sub section in the offensive weapon law that states wearing as part of national dress is exempt, of course taking it out the sheath will result in a charge and best have the page printed out and ready to argue with an over eager copper about it.

Not quite. The Skean Dhu is certainly not an issue here in Scotland (within reason, for example, a pub may refuse entry) but a Dirk is a different kettle of fish. It’s not worn with your run of the mill kilt outfits and so is not seen as “traditional attire”. I wear one with my No1 uniform with the band at events, and solo pipers performing at weddings etc are fine, but beyond that, your are treading on dodgy ground. However, reenactment groups are routinely seen with basket hilt and broadswords, but almost without exception, they are blunt.
