How does alcohol cause blackouts? - Shannon Odell

Explore how alcohol interacts with your brain, and how it can interrupt the brain’s memory networks, leading to blackouts.
--
Alcohol has been shown to have strange and selective effects on the brain. Many intoxicated people can perform complex tasks like holding a detailed conversation or navigating a walk home. Yet for those experiencing a blackout, the memory of these events is quickly forgotten. So, how does alcohol cause these memory lapses? Shannon Odell explores how ethanol interrupts the brain’s processes.

I've been disgustingly wasted from alcohol many times in my life, but never to the point of blacking out. I can be fully incapacitated, but I'll still be fully aware. Xanax however, is the one thing that has pushed the threshold of me actually losing awareness, while still being up and moving and talking. It happened once and I haven't touched it since. Truly terrifying to wake up somewhere and not know how you got there.

Alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my wife which brought me into my disastrous journey on Alcohol and cigarettes. We kept drinking and 20 minutes later I passed out, having one of the best nights of sleep of my life lol. When I woke up I felt a pain in my head and the scratches in my arm, yet I COULD NOT REMEMBER ANYTHING about it! To make a long story short, here's how we learned it in biology class: Short term memory is simply electric. It's just electric signals running around in your brain. Long term memory is chemical. Chemical processes alter the way our brain cells interact permanently and thus providing permanent memory. Alcohol does have an effect on electric signaling, but the effect es rather weak compared to its effect on chemical reactions, thus it has a way higher effect on long term memory.

Can’t remember the first time (😂), second time I was passed out in my bathroom with 🤮 everywhere (apparently I’d hit my head on the toilet) and drink was spilled on carpet (I also finished a part of a video game apparently 😂), and 3rd time was on a date. So I always thought people were lying and pretending(?) not to remember and Im still sure that is mostly the case. However, in the meantime I had several blackouts. I remember the first time it happened I thought someone drugged me but when it happened again and again I couldnt deny that it's "just the alcohol". The scary thing is im totally functional on the outside. People around me think I am not even thaat drunk. Can hold convos (better than sober) even when Im in blackout mode, do complex task, always find home etc...Was also the reason to stop. Not completely stop but no more hardcore drinking.

As a functional alcoholic with PTSD, I can tell you how it works. I'd lose my job if I got on psyche meds or drugs. Alcohol is the only escape. I either don't dream or rarely recall dreams when I'm drunk. It's an OTC med that my employer doesn't track. It's legal in all 50 states. As long as I'm not drunk on duty, I'm good to go. This is how many first responders end up as alcoholics. Alcohol destroys the memory over time. The catch is, you forget both the good and the bad things.
@ieatalgae

And you haven't considered going to therapy for your PTSD? I understand why you'd be skeptical about meds (SSRI's are kinda scary tbh), but therapy's probably a better alternative to what you've got going on. Though, if therapy isn't a good option due to finances/stuff like that, you could always try and write down your good memories/keep a journal so you'll still have some of them. Honestly, do that regardless. Helps you remember random things :]

Blacked out one time, had flashes of memories come back of falling down and hitting my head pretty hard on a brick fireplace and the floor, with several onlookers. Tried to go shot for shot with everyone at a very large high school party, as the bartender. Never again.

I honestly thought that blackouts were false, I've lost inhibitions, passed out, been belligirent, vomited etc. but never lost memories of events when intoxicated, but others I've known claim that they have. Just assumed it was a means to not take responsibility for your actions, nice to know that this is actually a reality for people.

I have a very easy time blacking out, can go from feeling totally under control to waking up confused in bed out of nowhere. It happens so often it's to the point it's annoying and I feel like a burden to friends. At the same time I love the feeling of being drunk and want to end up in the "Goldilocks zone" where I'm perfectly drunk haha.

Just last night, my daughter and son in law told my husband some wonderful news: they closed on their first house. He drinks a lot, and was high fiving them, saying congratulations, etc.. Today, I gave him a piece of paper to sign for $ we are giving them toward the down payment, and he said "did they get a house?" Sigh. I hate alcohol so much and am so glad I quit. Seeing him get sloppy drunk, mean, or silly, has just turned me off to it.

I wish alcoholism was as punishable by law as drug addiction. I've known so many women with permanent ptsd as a result of an abusive alcoholic. Emotional abuse, verbal abuse, and physical abuse leave life long scars. Hitting rock bottom is a good way as any to inspire a person to change whereas endless sympathy and casually explaining things away only excuses and prolongs bad behavior.

I had apparently walked to my parents car from the office, went down stairs, opened the car door myself, and sat inside

I’ve attempted to try to have a blackout but I can always seem to recall everything that’s happened while drunk or on weed very vividly while all of my other friends cannot. I’ve always wondered why I can get drunk easily, but never blank out or forget stuff from parties the night before. I don’t drink often either. But it’s interesting I may have some theories.

Being in the state of intoxication in fact makes me remember scientific theories I studied in academia over a decade ago. It always feels like the mind is unobstructed, but of course with some distortion to social pragmatics.

i never get sick when i drink and the result is that i can drink infinite amounts of alcohol if there's nothing to stop me , this has led to blackouts that i wasn't even aware occured , imagine this : -1 you're on your way to your car -2 you see it's not there anymore , you think it was stolen but what really happened is that between 1 and 2 you blacked out , moved your car and parked it near another bar and hours have passed that you don't know anything about . terrifying , total amnesia and you could have done ANYTHING during that time , nowadays i'm careful and i drink way less , it's even more dangerous than people think.

I wouldn't say all alcoholic beverages make me blackout but vodka and tequila does, every single time.... I won't even do 1 shot of vodka or tequila when I would go out. 😂 Now I don't drink anymore because I found medical cannabis edibles and RSO.... You can even make tinctures by putting cannabis flower in a small bottle of high proof alcohol and it makes amazing mixed drinks. You can even make it w/ CBD tinctures so it dulls the intensity of the THC.... 😊👍❤

My father is consistently intoxicated, being drunk nearly every day. Perhaps he is sober for a day or two per week. Due to his frequent drinking, his cognitive abilities seem impaired. He struggles to recall where he placed his glasses or phone, and at times, he can't even remember his recent whereabouts (*this is concerning). He is unable to engage in a coherent argument when advised to reduce his heavy alcohol consumption. With minimal physical activity, his organs may be deteriorating gradually. I share this to urge individuals to reconsider heavy reliance on alcohol.

I’ve been drunk many times but I’ve been only been blackout drunk once and I didn’t like it at all. When you’re in the moment for the parts you do remember you can barely talk or process what’s going on around you so it’s hard to enjoy and then the rest you just don’t remember plus you wake up with a horrible hangover the next day. Not only is it terrible for you but imo it’s not even fun
