You did a smashing job of discribing the scope :-D, even though i know how it works i still enjoyed watching :-). Thats a smashing oscilliscope, dual trace via chop or A/B switching. The front panal is nicely layed out, easy for even a non russian user. Ok it was the loverly cat i was watching LOL :-D. I have a cossor scope, a telequipment d32? and a radio shack display scope. The telequipment portable battery/mains one is bad joint city, ive spent a lot of time on it.

You can use an old CRT TV as a basic scope. Connect the deflection coils to a good audio amplifier and you can see the signal.

The Russians have built some really nice scopes back in the 70's and 80s... interestingly I had the chance to use this very same model back in the early 80's. By the way here's a crude scope built around an old TV "HACKED!: CRT TV becomes a crude Oscilloscope" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aScAZReGQc0.html

I didn't even know the important difference between coils and plates. I just assumed it was something about budget or the complexity of the image. I also liked that you used multiple perspectives for the drawing of the CRT. Thanks a lot! :-) P.S. The warning about putting out electrical fires maybe did pre-empt the joke. But it's important. And you delivered it deadpan. :-D

Nice to see you have a proper oscilloscope now - although its a bit old but still working well :-) A few years ago i bought my first oscilloscope which was an old Hameg 2 Channel 60 MHz on ebay. We used similar scopes when i studied in university nearly 25 years ago. The modern DSOs have some advantages but i still like the old analog oscilloscopes - good for lissajoux figures as well :-)
@DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 6 лет назад
I like analog scopes more than the digital ones. For me, it's the only real scope. A trained eye can identify a lot of things on the CRT, which you dont see on LCD. The brightness tells you how much time the beam spent there, you can see tiny changes, it's not pixelized and in discrete steps. And maybe the CRT warms up faster than the digital ones boot :). And an analog scope never tells you that you can't use features you didn't pay for :D. Let alone the possible timers counting down the time to failure. And turning a knob is much faster than clicking through loads of stupid menus.
@richardnanis
@richardnanis 6 лет назад
My Hameg scope needs about 10 min. to warm up for the trigger to work properly ;-) I see your point and i like the analog scopes for that as well. But a good DSO is no comparision to the analogue divices when it comes to logic boards, microprocessors and things like that when you need a bit of math on the signals. There is a good review on eevblog concerning about the discrete steps on the DSOs compared to the analog ones. It turns out, that they cover the noise much more detailed which the analog scope doesnt measure accurate and fast enough.

@Pawelr98 6 лет назад
Opening a scope won't break it. Just open the case and try not to break any cables. I have two oscilloscopes. C1-107(5MHz single) from 1992(so technically it's not USSR, it has no CCCP mark on it) and Schlumberger 5228(triple 250MHz). C1-107 still has germanium transistors in it( I saw one in deflection circuitry). It has integrated multimeter which is done entirely using discrete IC's. Character generator,ADC etc is all made using TTL + analog circuitry. Russian design is messy as always. Oscilloscope part works but the multimeter is semi-broken. Finding the schematic for the oscilloscope should make it easier for you, C1-118 is a popular model so it will be easily available (I found few on Polish forums). As last advice, remember that USSR scopes have slightly different BNC connectors than the west, modern probes will fit very tighly. Changing the BNC is a popular mod for USSR scopes.

Please make a video about how to read the NOS CRT tube datasheet specs, what the different voltages mean and how to implement these datasheet spec on a simple supply just for a single dot to appear on the center and how focus and intensity works. i have the common 5lo38i and it looks difficult to adjust the negative and positive voltages so that the focus and intensity works properly. also please describe how the blanking operates.
@DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 6 лет назад
hello, here's my diy scope with 5LO38I. danyk.cz/osc_en.html The cathode voltage is a few tens of volts higher than the grid1 voltage (the grid1 is slightly negative in respect to the cathode). The more negative the grid1 is, the lower the brightness. A potentiometer is used to set the brightness. It's possible to connect grid1 to 0V and use the potentiometer to regulate the cathode voltage. Then there's a focusing electrode with a positive few hundred volts in respect to the cathode. Use another potentiometer to set the focus. Then there's the main anode, which in case of 5LO38I is 1000V nominal. The datasheet allows 500 - 1100V. The voltage of the deflection plates should be close to the voltage of the main anode. This is why the cathode and grid1 is often connected to a high negative voltage, instead of connecting the anode to a high positive voltage. This way, the deflection plate driving citcuitry is not at a high potential. Here's a schematic of an old tube oscilloscope: danyk.cz/bm370_en.html To have an idea how it all may look. The 7QR20 CRT cathode is connected to about -340V and the anode to about +230V. This is more convenient than having +570V at the anode and the plates, but the voltage between the cathode and anode is the same. The plates deflect the beam - the beam is attracted to the more positive plate. The blanking of the beam is done by raising the voltage of the cathode or by lowering the voltage of the grid1.
@jimis04
@jimis04 6 лет назад
thank you for the very usefull help danyk! Your diy oscilloscope was the main reason i bought the 5lo38i myself and now im on seek for an oscilloscope schematic for general basic use. I cant implement your design because its difficult to find cheap tubes in greece. However i have studied your schematic and have tested the power section to the grids succesfully. I saw the beam on my 5lo38i on the center without using any deflection except that as already told you focus was not working properly. I wanted to ask you on your schematic you mention a component ''dt UZAP 100-120V''. what exactly is this. google translate didn't help at all.

Mike oliver those electronic scopes (DSO138, DSO Shell and the like) aren't bad for very little money. They usually come as kits, so there's a bit of soldering involved. Obviously not as good as a "proper" scope, though.

I'm in the same boat as you are Mike, but I have heard of going to Ham Radio sales & or swap meets & you can get things for like $5.00 and such for different items, which of coarse need a lot of TLC but I've seen some real nice equipment purchased cheap & they still worked. Just need to replace all the Caps, unless done recently with no questions asked about those, but all in all they are still great deals. Now if we can just find where they have these meetings we can hopefully score some nice testing equipment. Good luck Mike.

If you store the lager for so long that all of the water dries out, maybe then you can use it as a powder extinguisher or CO2 extinguisher :D.

Hypothetically it can be done ad hoc by opening the container and evaporating its contents atop the fire. The evaporation also consumes energy which is likely to have a fire reducing effect.
