"Before humans wrote down stories with words, they wrote them with art." To elaborate on this statement, art came first before writing, because writing itself was developed from art. In fact, writing itself is essentially a standardized form of drawing for the sake of practical communication and language representation, as some of the earliest writing in history were basically pictures of whatever the writers wanted to talk about or mention, and evolved over time to become the various scripts to write down the diverse variety of human languages.

A hand painted on a wall. Our first, most important story "I was here"

The cave paintings were likely viewed with torchlight (the fire kind for those in the UK). So when the fire flickered the animals, etc probably moved, giving a kind of religious experience, it's hypothesized, but this is more anthropology and also about how one experiences art being a part of the art itself. It's not simply seeing the image, it's also the space you are in that delivers a message and how it is meant to be experienced.

Love the Pizza John! Caught my attention and drew it to an important point about different POVs with art, stories, and history

Genuine question - is Pizza John art? And, should someone make a Pizza John out of rock?

Thanks Sarah and Crash Course Team for another great video! I took an art history course in undergrad, but I wasn’t at a point in my life that I could really appreciate it. Thanks for this course and giving me a second chance to explore this topic, it is wonderful!

I took a collage course “Religion in Architecture.” Fascinating subject, and maybe you can cover that in one of these crash course classes. It’s more than architecture and more than religion. I thought I would hate it, but I really enjoyed learning about the subject.

Love the rock note. The only piece of historical evidence about the Lewis and Clark expedition, beyond journals, was Clark’s hand carved name into rock, a large pillar of rock, in the Yellowstone park area.

The stele of Naram-Sin was the first piece of art we studied in my first art history class-after which I went on to study art history for five years 😄 So cool to see it talked about here with its counterpoint, which we definitely didn't talk about!
