What's funny about Bury The Light is that it has such a long build up, even though Vergil gameplay easily deletes enemy on screens in seconds. The moment you hear the chorus, the enemies are already swept off the screen.
You TRASH! Ranking changes your position on the song. Once you Git Gut you’ll realize styling with Vergil is Braindead, 2 basic combos should put you on S… or spam 1 super attack on a group of enemies. And if you play DMD/LDK you won’t clear the room in mili-seconds. So you will hear something coherent. And finally ITS RANDOM! You can instantly hear I AM THE STORM THAT IS APPROACHING once you reach S or you could hear FORSAKEN! Or even start with the rift of the final chorus. WHERE’S YOUR MOTIVATION? Use your Beowulf and Mirage edge to not stay on the D-B 24/7!
Dammit, you missed a chance to talk about the coolest case of this. Literally, why no one ever hears the lyrics of silver bullet. For those who don't know that starter song and lyricless parts (the most tormenting part is that banger solo at the start isn't anywhere in the soundtrack that I'm aware of) and in order to get the lyrics to play is to grab vergil during devil trigger as nero, it's one of the coolest boss secrets I've ever found.
By "banger solo", do you mean the violin part? It definitely is on the OST as Improvisation for Violin on a Main Theme "Legacy", if that's what you meant.
I exported the game audio files and you are mostly right. The game provides a lot of variations to transitions and endings and the songs are split into like 20 fragments. The fragments also have built in fade in and fade out of the instruments. Also the game audio is very well compressed and can be exported into high quality WAV files with third party tools.
If you like dynamic music then you'd like Mick Gordon's work on Killer Instinct (2013) where the music had changing cues from the fight itself and how you play: It starts with a music cue for the introduction of the fighters, then plays the stage theme, for higher combos the theme ramps up a little before returning to the stage theme (or a subtle variation of it). For combos of 16 hits or longer it launches into the most energetic part of the song and it even has cues from just standing around doing nothing by activating a calmer or atmospheric variation of the stage theme. Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal also played with this idea as well so those are worth enjoying too.
Dynamic Music was something that stylish action games have been going towards for years, like Metal Gear Rising's boss themes are a clear instance of it being used. Just that DMC was the first time it was used in "real time", where the player's actions rather than a pre-set cutscene is where the music transition occurs. Not to say that it isn't done masterfully in DMC, but that it's an evolution of something the genre has been doing for a while now. Hi-Fi Rush was also a side project for Bethesda and they managed to make a soundtrack where the entire game works with the rhythm-based elements of the gameplay so by comparison the needs of DMC's dynamic music (which I personally like more than the Hi-Fi Rush soundtrack, to be honest) seems like it would be rather easy in comparison, especially since we know modders can make dynamic tracks to put in the game as it is. The system has potential to be used in other games, like there is one particular property that would be very suited towards making a stylish action game and where dynamic music as a selling point would be viable.
My fav. God, I love dynamic music! Two of the best recent examples: Hi-Fi Rush, while it's more linear and more so for the bosses, has each Verse, Chorus, Verse and Chorus again for the individual stages, with the final cutscene being the outro. It's really well done, but for more dynamics, look to Metal: Hellsinger. The better you build your score multiplier, the more of song that comes in. You got the ambient intro, the drums, guitar, more guitar, MORE GUITAR and finally, the vocals and you want to keep those vocals, because OOOOO... It's so good.
Really good video! I hope you make more videos like this, a lot of highly edited video essays are kinda lame since they drag, but this is funny and to the point!
Dang, you went from 600 subs to 1K+ in just one dmc video with that got 14k views in 9 days. Seems like the youtube algorithm like it when you do videos about DMC 5 *cough cough* 102k views on ur pvp video *cough cough*. Nah but like fr, i hope your channel gets even bigger and bigger. Good luck.
Amazing video! You did a REALLY good job describing how DMC5 handles its adaptive soundtrack! I had this recommended to me shortly after it came out, would you mind me asking if I could have a glance at how you filled out the metadata for the vid? I’ve been making Capcom videos but none of mine get suggested to Capcom fans for some reason. Regardless this is an excellent video, would love to see more analysis from you!
2:34 not true. It’s such a subtle thing that I never even noticed it nor did it keep my attention. I was feeling like a badass because my combos were cool looking. Doom eternal soundtrack made me feel like a badass
*spoilers* One my favorite parts in the game is when your Nero fighting Virgil at the end and it's about to start to play burry the light again till you do something as Nero and it insta cuts to his theme
So basically it's like all those fight to the beat games......but not that good....I think the song needs some time to go from the beginning to full on there fore if u play on easy mod and kill everyone fast enough the song will just end even if u got S rank.....I mean yeah Vergil's them it's a bit to long......but idk still Metal He'll or something does this better
I will say though, the music has its flaws. Its way too quiet, you can hardly hear it enough to fully enjoy it. It gets really old, really quick. S ranks are easy to get as well, so you only really hear the main part of the song, and even that part doesnt play in it's entirety, such as nero's theme which literally plays until "pull my devil trigger", then it just loops into an instrumental version. The only rank with it's own song is S rank and upward, which are all the same. A rank just puts you into a looping portion to build up hype for the S rank, so it isnt very enjoyable. D, C and B ranks just start the song as usual. This makes it hard to hear the other parts of the music as they rarely play- you are too busy getting S ranks to care.
Eh... yes and no. Mostly no. There are loops and points to where the next jumps in. Think of it like Gears in a car. There are moments to switch Gears on the track, based on your Rank it switches. Now that's one way... which an okay-ish way. Yes you Read Me! The announcer hides the parts the tracks switch anyway. The REAL way to do this is the Song Devils Never Cry. Your have 5-6 layers and those go in and out based on what is going on, but just in volume but you modify the sound to. Make it fogy, noise, clear, far or close. That's how you do it. It's like 5 tracks that play in sync constantly but the game switch to what you hear.
