There is a battle at the heart of Formula 1. Its need to allow engineers to constantly innovate and push design and technology can stifle good racing and many of the values that make F1 great. How does Formula one balance this, keeping everything in check while keeping the spirit of innovation alive?
Let's look closer at the fine balance that F1 has to walk.

I like how you don't necessarily state your opinion and say "this is how it should be done". You strike a great balance between offering a solution and leaving plenty of room for thought, which may even come in handy when the F1 management comes out with another one of those fan surveys!

With the dirty air solution in the wind tunnel, this could be good. Because if only a certain amount can be created hen teams may have to select which types of aero they will use for each track. Eg a track with a lot of corners would benefit from aero that provides downforce and the opposite for tracks with straights
@harryford7021
@harryford7021 6 лет назад
Martin Thetford yeah I was only saying if there was a way to measure the dirty air. But the point you made about wind tunnels at tracks Is a good point that I didn’t think of.
@mattos4203
@mattos4203 6 лет назад
I guess you mandate a certain value of downforce for the car in question to make available to a test rig within a wind tunnel. You don't need to use another car, just a peice of equipment at X distance behind it to measure how many KG's of downforce it can get at different positions. The set up track to track will be irrelevant to the testers, it's not their concern, only that the cars meet the criteria. It is for the team to get to grips with. It must make a certain amount of 'clean air' available to following cars. As for compliance, make it so that teams are required to submit their cars for testing on request and at random with no warning, straight from the track with no interference or argument. Immediate disqualification for teams who fail or refuse to do so. Failing that open up the underside of the car for development and keep the wings/bodywork simple.
@mattos4203
@mattos4203 6 лет назад
Additionally, if the cars are designed in such a way to leave cleaner air in their wake, then ride height, wing angle and set up will not be an issue. Is it possible to make a small scale wind tunnel that can be driven around on a truck? Maybe a bit optimistic?

Nice vid. IMO, cost capping is already a good concept especially because in F1 we can still tweak aeros and internals. Creativity can still be utilized in cost capping IMO The only problem then is when they start banning something else only on aesthetic grounds like shark fins. They should be a little bit more leanier because this can hamper innovations harshly
@siddkumar8032

the problem with cost capping is obviously the big teams disagree with it because it affects them the most. They obviously do care about the sport but if it doesnt benefit them they wont like it

What is the point of motorsport if it won't push automotive technologies further? I think if Liberty will continue suppressing tech progress - F1 will die, as technological progress is one of the key point of the racing. It is already case that WEC and WTA are more technologically exciting than F1 as they allow for slightly (or not so sightly) more technological freedom. Spec racing is not the solution. I think Budget cap is the single good solution, as it will indeed make sure that teams are competitive and will force them to truly be creative with their technologies rather than just thronging money at the problem. Furthermore, I agree with Chain Bear that regulating the effects is indeed a better idea than turning F1 in another Spec race series.
@chainbear
@chainbear 6 лет назад
I think that's important for (some) motorsports, but as I say: that comes with a balance. You've got to manage the side effects.
@daspaddl
@daspaddl 6 лет назад
Maxim Dudich the Problem is it's not so easy with the big guys to implement: a) ferarri, rb and Mercedes willnot aproove a Budget cap (wich is why testig days have been limited) b) if you implement it: the advamtage of Mercedes an Ferrari is messive: they can test engines or parts in their supercars an claim they are Not for f1 but for prototypes of their car companies or other racing series. that prototype research might even be true or will happen just because of the valueable Info to f1 (just think of the advatage Mercedes hat with the v6 turbo introduced) And they have all the testing at Hand in house. Other companies would have to spend massive amounts of money to rent aoero facilities or other production/research places! How can you creat a Regulation free of cheating that Budget cap? I don't See one.
@BC-iq8ks
@BC-iq8ks 6 лет назад
Maxim Dudich the issue with the budget cap is how will it be enforced though. For example, Mercedes has the largest R&D center in the world, so it can afford to throw f1 projects to it, and it cannot be controlled by the FIA due to the sensitive tech developed there, Ferrari and Renault could do the same thing, while the non manufacturers teams cannot. Actually, Mercedes already does it, they recently launched a car with a derated F1 engine, any data they achieve there can be used in their F1 car, and as it is a commercial product, it is not on the team's budget. I wouldn't be surprised if Ferrari and Renault follow suit soon.

I think you should find a way teams 'want' to use less money. For example we know teams are not allowed to use more than 100 kg of fuel per hour. Let them use 120 kg when they prove their budget is less than €200k. Or if you want teams to innovate more give them 4.400.000 KiloJoule energy to start the race and lets say give them 5.000.000 KJ of energy if they prove they use less budget. If you do not write in the rules they have to use petrol, they might going to innovate to use other fuels. Connect it to the budget, and teams innovation will take off. They will use less budget to get more fuel. Also if the cars are to fast for safety reasons, give the teams less energy/fuel to use.

LMP manages to have diesel, petrol, 2wd and 4wd cars racing together. A question though, would allowing ground effects again remove some of the side wake vorticies that are so terrible for overtakes? or even allowing for closed weels as much of the front wing air shaping is to try and defeat the rotating air on the tyres messing up the airflow.
@GNeves302
@GNeves302 6 лет назад
Sure, but because of that the side effects he highlights are way more manifest. Huge costs that drives teams away and dominance by a specific team are ever present in endurance racing and while I love WEC, F1 would not be what it is or be able to sustain itself as F1 were it to deal with constant state of turmoil sportscar racing does.
@anessenator
@anessenator 6 лет назад
Issue with ground effect is that if the car bottoms out, bam - no more downforce, right when you need it. Extremely dangerous.
@DaFinkingOrk
@DaFinkingOrk 2 года назад
They just bought back ground effect (to a lesser extent than the old cars with the skirts) for next year in the hopes that it will do just that, you saw the future lol. Hopefully it won't suffer the same issue as it used to - instant large loss of downforce when going over a bump, as the commenter above said. But I'm sure they would have solved that and that's why it's more limited than back when cars had skirts and crazy amounts of ground-effect downforce.

As for the effect idea for dirty air, you could put the car on the wind tunnel with another front wing behind, if the difference between the downforce levels between both front wings is higher than x, the aerodynamic of the car is reproved. It would be hard to test during the season and would make development for smaller teams harder, but it's a start. Perhaps testing just the front wing may go a long way already. Edit: I believe we should extend this approach to other areas like the power unit, allowing teams multiple solutions as long as they manage to finish the race with x kilos of fuel .
@ThrowingItAway
@ThrowingItAway 6 лет назад
I'd love to see some variation in the power units as long as they developed the same max power and torque figures. This would breed far more interesting sounds for fans, give engineers a lot to work with. I look back at old F1 and it seems more exciting because every machine had a different sound, there were V12s going against H16s and in the turbo era you would have straight 4 and V6 engines. The sound of the cars is rubbish these days and they all sound practically the same.
@cosmic_cupcake
@cosmic_cupcake 6 лет назад
It´s not as simple as that. the whole car is affected by the wake, not just the front wing, so you´d have to put a full car in the back to correctly measure any neative effects. and that leads to the next problem: because you are trying to give aero designers more freedom, their cars will start to differ more, and different cars also react differently to the same wake. So practically you´d have to measure all cars against each other, and repeat the process each time that a small change was made, until everyone is within the guidelines. As for another solution, I would explore the concept of a standardized wake. Basically measuring vortecies and stream patterns with a good old smoke stream and a camera system hooked up to some kind of computer program, to determine and regulating the shape and size of the dirty air pattern behind the car. this would also be pleasant for engineers. since they would have a fixed stream pattern to work with, they could improve their own aero to work better within the wake of another car, making overtaking even easier for the driver. maybe this would even generate a tradeoff situation, where teams would have to choose between better undisturbed lap times, or better overtaking capabilities.

This is a great idea - even with the new 2019 regulations, theortically an aerodynamicist with the knowledge that his outfit may have one of the better PUs available and the driver will be possibly pole and have to lead from the front, they might compromise to create more dirty air than a more efficient design might. You don't need to be the fastest car possible, you need to be the fastest car that the others can't pass.

I totally agree with your idea of creating a regulation of the quality of air coming off the back of the car. Let the teams do whatever aero the want as long of it leaves an agreed upon amount of "clean" air behind. That would allow the team to innovate while providing for better racing...I would add a rule that teams with new designs get to keep their innovation for the span of 5 races or set amount BEFORE other teams are allowed to copy it. Like a temporary patent. This way the innovative team wouldn't have to keep their ideas secret. The fans would benefit from the technology.

That was a great example of the dirty air with cars dragging spikes. 👍 The way I see it, individual teams aren't the ones allowed to be innovative except using newer materials to make parts from (like hardware- bolts, brackets, etc) and finding those loopholes in the rules. F1, as an organization, is the one who makes changes certain years that allows innovation. Every time teams come up with something, it gets banned.

Great video I have long thought about measuring the effect of the aero rather than mandating what’s hanging off the cars. I really think f1 needs a clean sheet start with the regulation philosophy, rather than the bandaids that have been applied since the start of the championship. Here’s the some concepts I’d like them to think about when framing the rules. 1 provide the highest challenge for the drivers in cornering at the current circuits 2 allow overtaking that is based on skill 3 improve invention in all areas of car design not just on the aero side 4 enable any competently run team have a chance of winning in any one year

In 2009 the FIA promised a cost cap, which encouraged Caterham, Manor & HRT (under different names) to enter the sport for 2010. However the midseason saga with FOTA saw the FIA back down on the cost cap and since have seen them powerless to the whims of the big manufacturers. In order for 2019 & 2021 regs to work, they need a cost cap due to the law of diminishing returns as you've had stated.

You wont pass out when driving into a corner like you do when flying a jet. Also G suits would do absolutely nothing, they work by pressing blood out of your legs into you upper body. You've mistaken horizonal forces with vertical ones as the reason you pass out in a jet is that the blood is pressed out of your head into your legs. When cornering you wont have that effect to even a close extend to that.

First of all, you are assuming that he was talking about aircraft g-suits, when obviously they would be custom designed for racing, so would provide whatever support was needed, such as automatic helmet supports to prevent the helmet from flopping over from the gs. If there was no limits, certainly people would be making adjustable CG cars where the driver and engine moved to the side of the car on the inside of the curve, possibly even with the drivers seat angling to keep the head above the cg of the body, which would give similar forces to a fighter jet pilot. Then you add some rocket thrusters to turn the car faster, fans or rockets for additional down force on turns, etc, and yes, you could get to the point of needing a G suit! May you find frozen peas in your soup...

In my opinion. F1 is not the one and only racing series to watch. Leave it to evolve with the rules and accept it for what it is. Porsche Cup, GT Series, LMP, Touring car even MotoGP are all interesting and more so than F1 in some aspects. F1 has been forced into our living rooms. With the internet we are able to watch these alternative series and accept them for what they are. Variety is the spice of life.

Good idea to make a rule on “how many” bad air a car can produce! It would make the taces much better.

I think the speed at which these F1 cars go at now is great. It's hard to imagine no more new lap records if the cars are to be 1.5 seconds slower.

Your last thought about how to control de overtaking problems is what i also think it should be. Test the effect of turbulent air behind. Do what you want, but you can't generate more than X whatever it's needed to be measued.
