As someone who works in SEO, they 100% do use your past search results to tailor your future auto-completes and search results. Using an incognito window to search can help, but it'll still catalog everything you search during that session and start tailoring from there too.
i thought so too, i noticed they do it when you're already in a search flow, (and with the new "journeys" thing) but i found no difference in multiple searches in incognito and while signed in, on different devices, and tested with a friend from across the country too, on vanilla google.com. the sources were really vague about it as well. i'm sure there's more of a component but couldn't back it up personally
I can't say for certain, but I've long suspected that incognito isn't ain't confidential as they say, but who knows. The algorithm works in mysterious ways.
I have used Startpage which pulls from google results but does so in an anonymous way. You could also just use an alternative search engine with it's own search results
Umbreon location: directly behind Gabi on the chair. It’s well hidden in this video, Gabi’s head position doesn’t move much from the position that the umbreon is in
I want to see Gabi explain Laugh Tracks in tv and youtube- I feel like that’s a really interesting topic because while we all hate them, they almost always help
they mask the unfunniness of a joke and trick you into thinking its funny. they are the most annoying tropes ever invented in tv and im so glad people arent using them anymore
Ironically, the 'more human' search algorithm has made trying to use more specific keywords (academic, etc.) practically useless recently. Google seemingly decides that using uncommon terms must be 'accidental' and will more often come up with its cutesy 'did you mean [more common search term that sounds vaguely similar but is actually unrelated or considered incorrect in the context]?' than it used to
By now Google often seems to just "correct" it on its own without telling, like it often drops words for me that are crucial and i get totally irrelevant results or changes words. I remember back when i could put in a very specific set of words and end up exactly where i wanted but that's no more
I still remember the day google search suggestions switched from only showing things you'd searched previously to being based on things anyone anywhere in the world had searched. Because my parents didnt know about this change, started typing "how to" and yelled at me and my brother for "how to kiss" showing up (we were both quite young at the time). Luckily my parents arent abusive assholes and were receptive to an explanation + demonstration that google changed how its search suggestions work.
Hi Gabi, I want to just gush for a second! I love how diverse your video topics are. I have ADHD and I love learning about new random things, and when you post content it means I get to learn something from someone who's content 1) I can trust 2) is high quality and 3) is funny. Thank you for what you do! Your work is great and im sure all the Gabions appreciate it! (Can't remember what your fanbase is called lol)
I’ve been struggling to find the answers I look for on Google a lot recently. And trying to find discussions on Reddit forums was impossible because their search feature is just super broken. Then I’d use Google search for finding Reddit threads about specific questions and it worked well. So I’ve started adding “reddit” at the end of a lot of my Google searches and it’s way easier to find helpful answers that aren’t just trying to sell me stuff. Then I found out lots of people do this. It’s a thing. If anyone else is struggling to find an answer to their questions on Google, especially if the issue is all the top results being ads and/or large companies giving generic info using your keywords, then it might be worth adding “reddit” to the end of your query, depending what it is.
If you type 'reddit:' and then your search, it will search only reddit for those terms. It's a nice workaround for the absolute garbage that is the default reddit search
Because reddit is real people's real opinions, for better or worse. whenever I want to know what people really think about a certain topic, I do exactly what you do. I don't look at reviewers or consensus, tell me why people feel the way they feel.
Woahh I'm glad it's not just me!! The responses there are just way more human and I get a lot of indepth info vs when I just search an article and it's either super basic or trying to sell something
@Matanumi it is. It's a pharmacy. Here in the States, that means it's also a convenience store that even has a tiny grocery section and seasonal items and odds and ends. But they don't sell tobacco/nicotine products anymore (outside of nicotine replacement therapy like gums and patches). And depending on the state and county, they may sell alcohol. Apparently, it's really weird to outsiders that our pharmacies sell more than medicine, so I thought you might find it interesting
We’re not gonna talk about how I saw “what does rizz mean” at 5:30 and then proceeded to look it up, therefore fulfilling autocompletes self fulfilling profacy with 0 irony. Not gonna talk about that…
theyre great, im glade I discovered her when shes small So I can see her improve over time :^). She reminds me a lot of Nakey Jakey. And There was a void missing since Nakey Jakey rarely uploads anymore :/ and gangster has filled that void
I know its a bit different but my autocorrect is INFURIATING it literally "corrects" words that are spelt correctly! The other day I typed "good" and it autocorrected to "hood" which made no sense whatsoever with the sentence. I love technology.
happens to me too (literally as I was typing this it tried to correct me to "Mr") but my favorite instance was when I typed "that guy is such a jerk", spelled correctly, and it autocorrected to "that guy is such a hero"
A couple days ago I took one of my elementary school teaching tests and I got to thinking about how out of date education for teachers is about research and the internet and how algorithms aren't discussed at all and this was an awesome video with digestible information!!
I'm an IT Security specialist and you're spot on regarding scam advertisements. They are dangerous and need to be fixed ASAP. A popular method is to fake a software download site for VLC, OBS Studio or Notepad++ and bundle the application with a computer virus. This can happen to *anyone* if you're not paying full attention. We actively recommend Adblockers to our customers as an initial security layer.
I don't work at Google but I have supported such a system as an engineer. and, well researched and well explained. In a few engineering interviews I've asked the candidate to whiteboard how a system like auto complete would work then take it apart piece by piece and i think you got the key points. Also you asked about the term user intent. It's a catch-all best I can tell / buzzword for "quickly and accurately getting the user what they want" but I also see it used to mean "how can we (the company) profit and, you know, still do all that other stuff" - almost more like user engagement. idk, just my two cents. TBH I think you'd make a great software engineer.
I'm an SEO professional and most of what you say is on point, just to chip in - the biggest reason for Google not explaining how their algorithm works in detail is because there are always bad actors waiting to game the system. They've been pretty transparent with a lot of the important things good meaning site owners need to know, which is why you were able to find all the info for this video :)
They store your data and searches and use them for things like suggestions and ads even if you don’t have any “browsing history” they still have it all saved behind the scenes.
The actual definition of the "dark web" is anything you can't access with just a normal browser and search engine. This includes even simple stuff like private Facebook groups, all of discord etc. because in addition to the browser and search engine they also require a login and invitation.
Google definitely does use search history for autocomplete results. Lately I’ve noticed when I’m trying to search forum answers to technical issues I’m having it’s autocomplete will over rely on terms I’ve used for previous searches to autocomplete the search I’m currently doing. Sometimes it’s nice and helpful but others they’ll get really locked in on the wrong part of what I’m looking for. This does seem to refresh every session though.
It's pretty cool. I didn't remember the name of a RU-vid channel that I saw on Leon Lush shared so I searched for "guy who tells people to put their shopping carts away" and boom Cart Narcs is the top result. Yay!
6:51 I think they actually do use your search history for autocomplete. Some of what I experienced makes no sense otherwise. The autocomplete I get before and after a search is totally different. Say I searched some anime or game I never searched before. Any search after that for a few hours to a few days will have an autocomplete that reference that anime or game. It lasts even longer in the autocomplete based on if I clicked on different websites or just bailed. Funnily enough, even watching a RU-vid video can change your autocomplete results. Right before this video I did a "What does" search for something else and the "rizz" autocomplete was not there. Once I did the search again right after hitting that point in your video, it suddenly became my top result.
Not gonna lie, of all the informative things in this video, I think the most mind blowing part is that I finally understand why “meat and potatoes” is a saying
Okay so, here’s what I’ve noticed with autocomplete: When you search in one window and you search for a topic twice in a row the following suggestions will all be popular searching surrounding that very specific thing you’re searching. Meaning if I search for “is illegal hunting in Kenya bad?” followed by “places where poaching is the biggest problem” the autocomplete will, rather than give me the most popular searches to that next question, give me suggestions that alludes to a place in or near Kenya that has the worst cases of poaching. Rather than the worst place on earth. Meaning search engine autocomplete can lead you down a hole where it seems like your first assumption that it was in Kenya is right when it’s more common in (say) South Africa. I was writing a novel that included poaching problems and this exact problem happened to me. I got about halfway through the novel when I realised Google was personalising to my immediate searches. When I opened a new window the answers I got were WAY different.
idk when it happened but at some point, i went on a RU-vid binge and gabi planted a worm in my brain and now my day feels empty and pointless if i can't get my daily gatekeep content I'm obsessed I'm hooked and I'm not complaining.
6:36 They do use your data to tailor search queries. Try googling two questions about a disease, then google "how to deal with-" and it will complete with whatever ailment you searched prior. Google will change their autocompletes to follow the line of questioning it already knows based on your "search session".
Me an SEO: Why Gabi suddenly started to teach SEO things like Google to autocomplete, RankBrain, and Hummingbird updates? P.S. You really did explain in an easy to understand manner. Glad to revisit the concepts again!
i’m glad pika and mario weren’t intermittently blurred this time😂 love you and your content gabi, not been here for a long time but the increase in quality in such a short time has been stunning :) (also idk whether i found you from chris james or the other way around but damn you 2 are my faves)
You had me at yaya. Loving your videos, very informative and genuinely funny. Good edits and your sound effects (particularly the Zelda ones you pepper in) are superb.
Trader Joe's has a small parking lot on purpose. It's a marketing strategy to make sure they always look busy. It's part of creating a hype around their store.
If Google doesn’t use my browsing history, then explain how I can come across a word/concept I don’t understand in a video/article/post/etc., open a new window to look it up, click into the search bar, and BEFORE I EVEN START TYPING, the thing I came to look for is the first suggestion. Not gonna lie, it’s helpful 😅🙈 Creepy as heck… but also helpful 🤷🏻♀️
As someone who does search advertising for a living, they will never stop scams from advertising. The way they try to do it is by placing more relevant ads at the top but if you build a very quality scam site, you can game the system
Sometimes I watch something which is related to something else I want to look up. I put in 1 letter, and the autocomplete knows exactly what it is I want to search
I’m a big fan of the Kurtis Connor/Nakey Jakey/Danny Gonzales brand of youtube. I guess that’s like post vine youtube? Whatever it is you’re absolutely crushing it at hitting that style while also feeling completely unique. Instant fan
I use google complete A LOT. like every day. for: 1) Correct my grammar in English (because that's not my first language). if I don't know how to use a word in a specific phrase, google complete always saves me. 2) remember words (even in Portuguese). I have ADD, so I frequently forget some common words. so I type some phrase that word would fit and google complete saves me. 3) name of music, bands, movies, series, etc, because I always forget that kind of thing. Most time I don't need to even search, in google complete I found what I need. 4) when I'm browsing on my PC and want to do some math, use the search bar it's easier than opening the calculator. and much more.
The "huh, that's a word... nice" skit reminded me of the humor of Natalie Tran (community channel), an absolute icon I used to obsess over in high school. I was veeery pleasantly surprised, as I don't often experience that type of humor on yt nowadays
Ahh i knew location had an impact! My search results where literally exactly related to the kind of people who live in my area when i moved, completely changed them
They for sure do something with past searches, whenever I start a new game I tend to search it up, and it'll be like "Corn" "results based on recent search history, Stardew valley."
I recently c.. I recently discovered your videos & have been catching up on your content. It's pretty good, I'm very into music stuff and & when your Puth video popped up on recommended I subscribed immediately. I've watched almost every recent video and you don't really disappoint! Then in this one. This one joke you made.. I KNOW what you meant by it, or at least I pray that I do. But I audibly gasped when you said "It's trending topics that may come in short bursts... Like your dad." I had to pause the video and very quietly laugh myself to tears. It's possibly the funniest thing anyone's ever said in a video on this topic.
One of the best videos u ever made! The informations were presented in an interesting way. All ur jokes were good and ur outfit was fire (thats a bonus point) :) i like ur channel a lot
BRO THOSE MR BEATS ADS THO OMGGGG if I'm watching on my phone and I scroll down from the video I'm watching, it's literally always that ad but instead of "1,000," my ad says "500."
