I'm more interested in the mechanics of how the gyro speeds up with applied motion.

Finally found a useful video which explains how it really works.. Refer to ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3O67--fTAQE.html

Wow, this is so not the part of the Powerball that I wanted to learn about.

this is way more simple than i thought and make me really wonder how its works so it can gain so much energy just by the wrist motion
@PsychedelicHaze
@PsychedelicHaze 4 года назад
yea its really fascinating that you can rotate your wrist a couple of times and increase the rotation speed from i probably 2000 rpm (its a guess for what you need to get the y axis into motion and start the thing) up to 16000 rpm really crazy

Great video! We love how you're promoting the benefits of using a gyroball to improve strength and dexterity. We've also developed a methodology that focuses on sustainable efforts and results while activating the entire upper limbs. We believe our approach can complement what you're already doing and take your training to the next level. Keep up the great work!

A magnetic field is not created by the movement. The magnetic field is fixed and provided by the magnet. The movement of the coils through the fixed magnetic field is what induces (that's where the name inductor comes from) current on the coil wire and power the LEDs.

Guess you're young :) Rubber contacts were the main thing connecting LCD's in calculators, DVM's, watches and nautical instruments. The "sensor" you're referring to is a reed - relay, a relay that has it's contacts closed in the presence of a magnetic field. Thus, the permanent magnet spinning is triggering relay's contacts once every revolution.

"Zebra" strips. used since LCD displays were created.

>The "sensor" you're referring to is a reed - relay, a relay that has it's contacts closed in the presence of a magnetic field. So it's a type of sensor.

Guess I'm old. I had one in the 70s that had no electronics and no drawstring. Purely manual. Great for hockey players.

That's interesting. I wonder why they are coming back these days... I'm guessing that it's the whole "IoT" phenomenon where we can stick an IC into nearly anything.

I did too. It was called Dyna Bee. I bought one on eBay a few years ago. I also bought an NSD Powerball and that's the best one made. You can see the drill marks on the metal rotor core from the balancing operation. It spins easily and vibration-free with a flick of the thumb. Quiet too. It also comes apart with three screws for cleaning.

Why would you want something more complicated and with a battery that would annoyingly need to eventually be replaced? Something that converts the energy of your motion into light is way cooler and elegant in its simplicity.

Does the all metal one have a metal track for the gyro to spin in and if so, how does the gyro get any friction vs the plastic track? I have an all plastic one that lights up but want to get an all metal one but not if the inner track is plastic.

what's that label on power inductor?

Hello from 6 years into the future . You didn't talk about how the ball actually accelerates. Is the plastic rotor somehow weighted?

As a generator, how does input compare with output? Are there other applications for this unique type of gyro and generator?
@Andy-df5fj
@Andy-df5fj 2 года назад
I would guess that the power output can't be loaded very much more than what it takes to light a few LEDs because that would slow it down too much or even stop it all together. The input goes through a very tall effective gear ratio which produces almost no torque. That's why it takes so long to get up speed.

is the wheel off balance so in effect you're throwing the weight around like a marble in a cup
@donuttryit5839
@donuttryit5839 3 года назад
or a mobile bike! I’ve been trying to figure out if you could harness this thing to a cradle in lieu of your hand, and turn the cradle via a geared system like a bike.
@fryncyaryorvjink2140
@fryncyaryorvjink2140 3 года назад
@@donuttryit5839 it seems possible to me, it'd probably have to have an electrical generator hooked to it that runs a motor on the bike wheel, not the ideal setup, basically hauling 2 motors and the gyro flywheel around, heavy! There's a video where a guy put magnets on the wheel of the gyro and used it to charge his phone, not sure how much of a charge it was getting though. I'm just wondering if a large foot powered one could get a bicycle going faster than the traditional setup, if you could go 35 mph easily, that'd be a great form of transport. Highway speed might be a pipe dream

lol the rmp meter is powered by the spinning of the powerball so thats why you could see numbers XD (checks the opened up meter nope the batteries died im just dumb but the original like mine has the rotation powered meter :/ )

I was confused why you had to mention the word "chinese" when you said "cheap chinese knockoffs" at 6:58. This is so unnecessary and is very offensive. You get what you pay for. Although I don't expect you to be fascinated as many other viewers, I'm very disappointed at how you as an engineering youtuber treat people who got something to work using a very simple mechanism like this rude and condescending.
