There’s no shortage of options when it comes to on-camera video mics, but would Jo-believe there’s actually something new out there? Let’s take a look at the Joby Wavo Pro and see how it compares to some other popular on camera video mics!
Joby provided the Wavo Pro to me for free, but I’m under no obligation to make a video about it or say anything specific. Read my Ethics Statement about objective reviews, sponsorships, and brand partnerships: himynameistom.com/ethics
None of the audio in this video was processed- you’re hearing each mic as it sounded running straight into my camera.

The outdoor performance was great - looked like a lot of wind and it blocked almost 100% of it out. Once you went lavalier (no dead cat) - wind noise came back in big. Great review Tom.

I preferred the mic without active noise reduction. I’m watching on an LG television. The ability to add an external mic is a killer feature. Superb review! Thanks Tom!

Yeah, noise reduction does always seem to do weird things with frequencies, but it can definitely be a lifesaver in a pinch.

10:54 yes, people shooting mountain bike videos, how tos, how to do techniques or do some work of some kind like wood work or something, but in these scenarios it's better to wear a mic like you do. Which works well. But this mic performed quite well even for this extreme distance. So good to know it will work ok in an emergency.

Happy to hear it! All of the different wireless sets are nifty, but I think it's a great idea to have a decent lavalier to go with them too.

Sounds great. I like the firmware support of the VideoMic NTG. Joby seems to be kicking the door in with new products but I need more proof of long term support.
@tombuck
@tombuck Год назад
Yeah, Rode's firmware updates are pretty much second to none in terms of actually adding new functionality/compatibility. Joby seems to be doing well too, but like you said, the long term support definitely makes a difference and the only way to see how they handle it is for time to pass.
@edgardbmedia

Great Review. I did notice the noise cancelation worked more for on camera handling, didnt do a lot to cover the washing machine sound. The body is kind of weird but other than that the audio sounds good and i do like the option of adding a Lavalier mic. My go to is still the Rode NTG for vlog videos.
@tombuck
@tombuck Год назад
Yeah, I noticed that too. The NTG is tough to beat, but I think the Joby is a good option for someone who doesn't already have a mic- especially if they need a second/lav mic. I love that option!

I had purchased a diety s mic2, i worked with it along 2 year in a vocal booth for Vo, its sounds bad for me , i tried many EQs but the sounds missed some things. Believing that I can get SENNHEISER KMS 416's quality sound for a third price .after two years or more of use, I can say that it is not possible. If I want SENNHEISER KMS 416 sound, just pay 1000 dollars if you can. Now I use The SHURE KSM 42 and I am very happy with it
@tombuck
@tombuck Год назад
Yep you’re 100% right. I had the S Mic 2 too and for me it sounded nice when close, but it dropped off at a distance (and I wanted to use it as a boom). Sometimes the pro prices are absolutely justified.

@@tombuck I actually had no idea! I thought it was a newish release 🤣 I just got mine last week! I definitely get a little behind in the video mic world. This is just a darn good video. Interesting topic too. I have a Rode VideoMic Pro+ in my closet that never comes out because I'm such a sucker for my NTG3, and I convince myself that its worth it bringing out an XLR recorder lol. When I say it, it sounds stupid. Hmm..

What an another day when Tom uploads a video. I just felt sad from inside. ='| But when you upload a video, It really helps. So, With every microphones I had. From my BY-MM1 to my current 7RYMS, And this. (The Joby Wavo one) Well, Another best microphone from a VideoMic GO II. And yeah, I really like how it (Joby Wavo mic) gives me a sound meter and a secondary mic input. (What if I can plug my other boom mic in, What's gonna happen? 🤔) Btw, This mic is gonna be anything compared to the VideoMic GO II or with my mics that I've used. 😊 I think it stills makes a bit difference, Though. It depends on the quality, Maybe? "Btw, My dream mic it stills be a VideoMic GO II (or maybe I could look for alternatives 🤔)"
@tombuck

The GO II is a really great mic, especially at the price. But I do personally prefer "powered" mics since they tend to be a bit more sensitive, have some extra "reach," and pack some helpful features. Thanks for the kind words!

Does the dead cat come with the Joby? The need to buy one for the Rode mics has always irked me. I agree with you on the 3.5mm cable. Angled connectors work better and at $300 it would have been nice to see Joby include that. It's not an insurmountable issue, but it's one that requires the user to go out and source and additional cable. I'm glad to see that the Joby can split the audio from two inputs but I would prefer that to be default rather than needing the app to change. It's easier to record in two-channel audio and then create stereo from a single channel in post or blend them as necessary. Perhaps in a future mic review video you could take it out into the wild? I do a bit of in-person interviews of people on trade show floors, cafes and elsewhere, so it would be very interesting to see practical noise rejection and isolation of the microphone. I know that's not the kind of videos you typically shoot but I think it would be a good exercise of the mic. I have found though that these smaller, RU-vidr mics work differently than professional mics. The way I handle the Rode VMGO2 or Diety D4 is quite different than the AT4073 or MKE600. Thanks for another great video!
@tombuck
@tombuck Год назад
Yep, the deadbeat comes with it, and it's a surprisingly nice one. I'd love to take advantage of some future trade show/event to test out mics and gear. Definitely planning for NAB next year!

6:28 It definitely helped, but not a massive difference. (listening on Philips Fidelio X2HR) 8:42 Yes, I heard some hiss. plus 10 sounded great at normal volume on my pc, but once I turned it up to max it too got hiss. Barely any at the shot with the mic being shown 9:03 played at max volume. But I don't listen at that high volume.I guess software might be ble to remove the hiss.

Is it just me or after updating the firmware with the app, does it disable the physical buttons, and full use without the app? My +10, +20 physical buttons no longer ever since pairing the app, and updating the firmware.

I could be totally wrong, but from what I know Rode doesn't manufacture anything for other companies. But their Videomic design definitely became pretty iconic, so it doesn't surprise me that there are A LOT of similar looking options out there (it's also just a practical design, so I'm sure that plays into it too).

I usually try keeping the camera's audio levels set very low and then adjust with the mic. With my Sony cameras, that usually means the gain is on like a 3, and then the NTG is around 8 on the back dial.
