I saw Liza in 1985. She was one of the best concert dollars I ever spent. She had that charisma that her mother had and the singing and dancing chops too. She was really into getting the crowd to it's feet. She was totally incredible. She's an American treasure. I would have loved to have seen Judy. She never tired of questions about her mother and took comparisons as a compliment. She also always had my respect for finishing raising her younger brother and sister after Judy's tragic death.

She also paid her mother's debts after she died. She called The Rat Pack, who had been like uncles to her, and asked if they could help her get booked at the casinos to pay off her mother's debts because, as she put it, there had been so much gossip about her mother that she wasn't going to have it said that her mother's bills didn't get paid. She felt she could at least flip that part of the negative gossip about her mother to a positive. She's also never bad-mouthed her mother and was also proud of her sister when Lorna began to sing vs. feeling threatened. THAT is what a good daughter and sister does.

Oh yes! I was fortunate enough to see Liza in concert twice! The first time I saw her was right after she won the academy award for best actress for her roll in the movie CABARET. What a dynamic performance she gave in concert both times. Just incredible! 👍🤗❤

It's just such a genetic gift to begin with, but it looks like she must have enjoyed performing because she put such work into it and became so good at it herself. I wouldn't have had the courage to sing when everyone knew who her mother was. I'd always fear letting people down. She's also wonderful as one of those performers that makes it all look so simple. I just really admire her work ethic and the high standard she strove to reach.

I've followed Liza for awhile. She has always been a consummate professional. I played my moms LP of cabaret until it was well worn and I had to replace it with a new CD. Liza was under her mother's tutelage since childhood. Just Watch Judy Garland's Christmas special. Liza was already a gifted performer, mixing it up with her mom and guests like Mel Torme at only 17 years old. Thanks for a splendid and informative analysis of Liza’s performance. I appreciated every nuance that you pointed out-your thorough approach is massively appreciated! You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that we could go on for years analyzing and comparing the similarities/differences between the voices of mother and daughter. I have a couple of great memories of meeting her. I ran into her, literally, going out a door backwards at The El Tovar, in the Grand Canyon, and then I was selling balloons at The Parade of Roses. She saw me and yelled out at me from the sun roof of a limousine. When they pulled up next to me, she tells me, I’ve got to have some of those balloons. Then she saw my venders license and says Hey! I know you! Lol. She was a pleasure to meet.

But oh, I've met so many people. My 2 favorites are Elvis Presley and BB King. Both are long stories but nice memories nonetheless. They were really just genuine people. And I don't fan girl well lol. I just like talking to people. Charlie Rich became a friend of mine because he came into my store one day and I made he and his wife fresh coffee. He followed me from store to store just so he could hang out and talk. He was a very nice and gentle man. Just so many awesome memories. Liza was the 3rd one to recognize me upon our 2nd meeting. I was shocked and awed by that, considering all the people she had met you know? Got several private concerts from Jerry Lee Lewis and saw him in concert 3 times. Met Jack Clugman at a gas station in La Jolla. He was driving a beat up old 63 Chevy that belonged to his Gardener lol what a nice man he was too. Even met Alabama at the Grand Canyon before they got big. I like to think I gave them a break from the madness celebrities sometimes endure.

They got up and walked past me and he said hello. I thought that was sweet. Dean Martin came through one night and my co-worker fell off her stool as he walked past laughing. Met Glen Campbell up in the VIP room because he was nice enough to allow anyone to come up and the lines formed. This was in his hay day. Saw him at the end in the "final concert tour" in Galveston at a wonderful venue, and he was quite good, though well into Alzheimer's. Saw Elvis all the time in Vegas and my city, and like you said, so many more to even list. Reason? Where I worked, and Vegas, where I played. Saw Liza in Vegas and here. Liza uses drama a bit differently than mom Judy, in that her dynamic body language matches the story she's telling. Judy's dramatic delivery, on the other hand, was tied to the words she sang. She was a great drama coach (unconsciously) to Liza in this regard, and mentioned in an interview how happy she was that Liza had more freedom of expression than she herself was permitted.

I love your analyses - they're so detailed, thoughtful, and intelligent! One thing that you touched on briefly, which to me is the thing that is most alike between Judy and Liza, is that Liza clearly learned from her mother how to COMMUNICATE a song, in a way that almost makes you feel like she's having the thoughts expressed in the song spontaneously. You can really FEEL her experiencing what she's singing about. It's a rare gift, and very few singers can deliver that at this level.

Standing in line at the checkout counter in 1972, I saw the cover of Newsweek with Liza's photo from 'Cabaret' captioned "A Star Is Born" and immediately told my husband that I wanted to see the movie. After watching, I thoroughly agreed with that caption and even found myself singing several of the songs from the film around the house and garden. I had seen 'The Sterile Cuckoo' awhile before and knew how good she was at portraying angsty fragility, but her breakout performance as Sally Bowles was such a revelation that I knew that she was a force, for sure. Of course, I had to buy the OST album, love it. What a great analysis, Fil. I'll bet Judy and Liza sang a lot together at home and your comparison of their voices shows me that they probably sounded terrific! ✨

Both Judy and Liza sing in a way that makes their voices additional instruments in the piece. Both are also exceptional dramatists of song interpretation and delivery. They emote the words through subtlety and power in their voices, and in physical and facial gestures. They embody musicality, even when they speak. Judy and Liza have had some of the most talented songwriters of the day create songs especially for (or about) them, and to me that is real testament to the importance of and tribute to their talents.

Liza is not a vocalist, she’s a great artist , telling a story acting the lyrics out in Her own way, style. Never compare garland to another singer because Judy was the finest actress and singer. Liza is loaded with talent and in my opinion under rated even with Oscar , Emmy , Grammy , and every other award under the sun . Still Garland was the greatest live performer ever . Liza is at her zenith here vocally. The actual sound of garlands voice was so distinctive . So is Liza’s singing / talking voice . Lorna actually has more talent for singing but doesn’t have the acting ability . Both are great and should be celebrated for their own contribution .

Liza was vocally very filled with some cold symptoms when I sat 4 row performance. She also had 6 corp gents, 3 each side of her, with the dance breaks around her as partner. She had an energy high as she was physically caught into her partners and had to sing less. How clever the choreography of the dancers covered around her to catch any fall, because she had 2 full hip replaced. I gave my parents 2 tickets to see her at a youthful peak. I had no idea how they would respond to her being the Rat Pack, Count Basie, Ella Fitgerald fans, but I received a long distance call from them at my university dorm raving about her sensational performance. I was surprised but very very grateful my parents had a great night. Of course, her mom was a phenomenal gift of nature. It is always the greats that never know how gifted they are. 🌹💝

Even their mannerisms on stage are similar. I remember watching Judy on all those variety shows in the 1960's, --in fact, Judy had a variety show of her own, if I recall correctly--and Eliza's stage presence and movement remind me so much of her mother's. Great video as usual, Fil.

CLEARLY, It is Lizas passion for her craft as well as for life, that she brings to her performances and the quality of her voice is second, in which she is aware of. Her mother's voice was a little more 'pleasant' to the listener, but Liza is a cut above the rest when it is applied to her, on stage presence. FYI, in a recent interview with Pat Benatar, she attributes her career to Liza. Before she embarked on singing as a career, she heard Liza perform live, and said to herself, "I can do that!". and the rest as they say is 'history'!!!
