How Does Slab City Exist?

Slab City is what was the former Camp Dunlap, built for WWII for the Marines and abandoned and dismantled in 1946. USAF was still part of the US Army until 1947 when it became a separate branch of the Defense Dept. so it was not an Air Force base

Tons of travelers go to slab city during the winter.the rules are respect.and knowing right from wrong if you don't have that you won't make it they're long

The point-in-time count is a thing done nationally, of homeless people. Slabbers are counted as homeless. Also, I think the bare minimum you can get on Social Security is about a grand a month, and you can live OK out there on that.

No offense dude but really it wouldn't be that hard to sleep with your backpack in the tent. Just a little less comfortable. Or lock it to your tent or have a rope attached to your pack hied to your wrist in the tent or something but I'm sure you've learned your lesson anyways. Talk to some people at slab city and you might be able to get a lot of views, people are curious as you can see by the plethora of slab city videos. the land slab city is on is owned by a California teachers union and managed by the State of California. The Salton sea is the largest ecological disaster in California history. It was created by mistake. Back in the fifties, they were trying to sell the region as the Mediterranean of California and lots of people went there on vacation. But then heavy rains wiped out a lot of the tourist amenities, the water kept getting more salty, and the tourists stop coming and the value of the land dropped to almost nothing, making that investment by the teachers union worthless. The groundwater in the region is salty and toxic, which is part of why they can't grow food in slab city, the other part is when anyone in slab city does anything to generate any real income (swap meets, flea markets, music festivals) or build permanent sustainable infrastructure the sheriff's department cracks down. The state of California doesn't mind the existence of slab city as long as it remains a welfare colony housing undesirables. Slab city is essentially a voluntary prison. Recently some people tried to buy salvation mountain, but the state wanted them to buy all the land under slab city. the sale didn't go through, I assume because the buyers realized that if they bought the land then the county would have immediately started issuing citations for everything occurring there.

People who live in Niland are mostly farm workers, they have no need to go to Slab City.

I don't know what to say. Appears you are still going around in circles. Do you have any sort of life plan in mind? Maybe Slab City could be your "home" base if there's nothing else going on. Barter, trade, and share. You have your music to share...
