also an aussie, avid nascar fan...nascar has some of the best examples of many aerodynamic effects..slip streaming...including effective distances (in or out of the draft) aero loose/aero tight. side drafting, (my favorite) which seems to at corner entry through to the centre (apex), depending on the position of the outside car/speed difference between the two cars, will cause an aero loose condition in the inside car...it is fantastic to watch... explanation of how one car can 'take the air' off another would be golden.

That would make for a great video.

Good stuff. I would add that another (and imo potentially more important) cause of "aero loose" is the simple fact that act of drafting closely diminishes the downforce effect of the leading car. The air does not "wrap around" the tail/trunk/spoiler of the leading car when a car is close behind. Instead it moves in to the air flow over the nose of the trailing car. The end result is a loss of rear downforce on the leading car which makes the car unstable (no change in front downforce but loss of rear downforce). Also, bump drafting is the act of actually contacting the car in front, thereby passing your extra momentum on to them making both cars faster. I call it a "love tap" in my in-car videos. :). Keep up the good work!

That's why aero kits are so important to supplement that lost down force
@Racer_X
@Racer_X 8 лет назад
Agreed... and in turn, those aero kits cause more turbulence and affect (negatively) the slipstreaming effect. It's all intertwined. :)

Yep, the loss in rear downforce is what I was talking about from the 3:40 - 4:00 mark. Thanks for the compliments! Just checked out your channel, there's some great racing on there!

Hey kyle, would you mind making a video about Arial's new fan car?
@piffuu9848

Wow thx for explaining this complicated shit to me. I thought the front car got nervous because of the pressure from the behind car and the front car got fuck up mentally and the behind car can sweetly overtake him. Damn, science is really important on motorsport.

Question. Why would the low pressure and high pressure regions interact. Wouldn’t the low pressure area negate the high pressure area?

Thanks for the explanation. Edit: So, the reduction in downforce on the front of the trailing car is the cause of a reduction in downforce on the lead car, right? Stupid spell-checker!

Are there any books you use before making your videos? If so what are they

Just a question, probably a stupid one but I can't find much on google. Do aerodynamics change at different speeds? Like in a city where you're only limited to 35mph, would aerodynamics have the same effect as that car going 75mph+ on the highway?

It did help, not sure how I missed that video or how google didn't come up with it as a result. In a car like the new NSX, where they basically tunnel the air through the car, does this reduce drag or is this ineffective? Keep up the great videos, you're one of the best on youtube that makes the information understandable.

Hey Kyle!Thanks for the informative vids , Can you help point me in the right direction , I want to make an insole for my soccer boots, I get pain from the under studs, I'm guessing high stiffness is essential as elongation from stud pressure may cause that slight uneven surface , causing a similar pressure caused by studs ? Anyhow I'm willing to invest a fair sum of money in this to stop the stud pressure, to get a thin and stiff insole (maybe if possible curved at the edges like some insoles ) Is that a project you could help me with ? If so how much money would that cost me for your time and labor ? I am situatied in Melbourne, more than happy to travel as it's very important to me to get this right . Cheers thanks in advance for your help Justin
@KYLEENGINEERS
@KYLEENGINEERS 8 лет назад
Hi Justin, I would have thought that a few layers (say 3) of carbon fibre moulded to the shape of the sole would do the job, maybe being split into 3 sections to allow the boot to still flex a little (although from what I remember soccer boots are already quite rigid?) If you want me to run some design calculations etc. on it shoot me an email at kyle @jkfaero.com and we can talk specifics, but I'd imagine it is something you could do yourself with a little trial and error. Cheers, Kyle
@juzzyzammitello9299
@juzzyzammitello9299 8 лет назад
Hi Kyle , if you could do that for me that would be amazing thank you. The better quality soccer boots tend to be more rigid. I'll definetely send you an email regarding it. I'm more than happy to pay you , I'd feel a lot more comfortable that way knowing it was done professionally , Cheers , speak soon .

but what's about the intake air, coming through the grill? in this case (i think) there will be the loss of the power
@Racer_X
@Racer_X 8 лет назад
Yes, if the following car needs to take in air for cooling, that may limit the amount of time/distance that they can follow closely. I've had to pull out of the draft many times to get air through my radiator as my engine temp climbed.
@KYLEENGINEERS
@KYLEENGINEERS 8 лет назад
Indeed, you can also see this in F1 cars where they are following a car for a few laps and have to pull out from behind it down the straight to keep their engine and brakes cool. Check out my Dirty Air video for more information on that!
@chasemiller7974
@chasemiller7974 5 лет назад
Well it wouldn't reduce power from loss of air into the engine because the engine depends on sucking the air in, not airflow to the car. Now it can however overheat your radiator due to the fact that the air is not flowing through it as fast.

Yeah I got quite a few requests on this one from the dirty air video. I find that the hardest thing for me is picking what videos to make, something that I may consider trivial is actually really interesting/difficult for the broader population, and no-one wants to watch/pay attention to what I consider difficult haha

At 1:18, you said downforce doesn't have any bearing with topspeed, but my understanding is that downforce reduces topspeed (through drag, maybe?). Please clarify; I'm a bit confused.
@KYLEENGINEERS
@KYLEENGINEERS 8 лет назад
Yep, you're on the right track, the production of downforce inherently produces drag, which is why we see F1 cars trim back their wings at tracks like Monza to reduce both downforce and drag. But this is simply to reduce the drag, if I had two cars with identical drag, but one makes three times the downforce of the other, they will both have the same top speed. So, strictly speaking, downforce has no bearing on top speed. Make sense?
@nickamarit
@nickamarit 8 лет назад
Ahhh, got it. When you put it that way (keeping drag constant but with varying downforce), it makes sense now.
@ayushgupta5061
@ayushgupta5061 7 лет назад
hey kyle dont u think when the downforce increases the tyres will have tighter grip with the road and due to rolling friction the speed will reduce ......m i wrong ??
@yamilmontes1365
@yamilmontes1365 7 лет назад
Since when is it ok to bump slip stream or slip stream at all? Use your own car's power and if your engine isn't capable of letting you accelerate without hinder from drag, then too bad. Re tune your car and try again. In games if someone slip streams me I'll brake check them.
