The brass isn't that hard to get, I have a .32-20 Remington Model 25 that I handload the HV loads for. I don't believe any factory HV load is available anymore for liability reasons(they are not safe for hardly any handguns or black powder era rifles). It chronos around 1800 FPS with a 100 grain bullet.
@redtra236 Please point me on the direction of .32-20 brass. I finally picked up an original '73 Winchester .32-20 and also an original Colt to pair it up with, but I can't find any brass available to cast and load for them.
@@9mmARman Dillion precision had some recently it might be sold out now. It's not easy to get but not that hard isn't insane price wise. I just looked and saw some on gunbroker that was under $1 price wise. That's pretty expensive for brass but compared to stuff like .50-70 for example relatively low cost. Luckily I have a lot of .32-20 brass, I've shot some of them 15+ times with no issues.
Interesting. I just luv your content sir. I'm a older gentleman and I started collecting some lever actions because I'm watching your channel, I only have 3 old ones They're hard to Especially in good shape. When i was a young man i was into automatic firearms. Thanks for showing us more of those beautiful rifles, great American craftsmanship ❤ 🇺🇲
I have a 1955 Gun Digest that has velocity, energy and penetration in 7/8" pine boards for these fine old cartridges, including.30-40, .30-03 and.38-55
@@Leverguns50 Yeah i like how they used to refer to full metal jacket as "full patch" LoL. I'll get it out of the back of the drawer one of these days and quote the ballistic results
I've fired an original 1873 Winchester chambered in 32 20. It belonged to my grandfather. I remember that rifle as being very pleasant to shoot. God bless you, brother. 👍
First. Nice old school _(Gen 1)_ Steyr M9. Love the Steyrs. Nice series of demonstrations. Still would be nice to have the 9mm control round fired from a similar carbine length barrel though. At any rate good video. Thanks for putting in the time & effort. It's appreciated. 👍 smacked.
I grew up with an original Model 73 in .32-20. It was one of the most accurate rifles I have ever shot. We used to joke about how slow the velocity was, but it was so accurate it didn’t matter. Everyone who shot the rifle said the same, it made them a better shot. And it took plenty of whitetail’s. Thanks for your channel!
These two cartridges are about the most fun to shoot that there is IF you are a handloader. If not, paying for factory ammo is going to be expensive. If you load your own and cast your own bullets too, they are downright cheap AND pleasant to shoot. I have a 1990's manufactured Marlin 1894 in 32-20 and load it with the Lyman #311008 bullet - a 115 grain flat point at 1,300 ft/sec. It is surprisingly effective against small game. Way outperforms 22LR and not much if any louder. It can be loaded much faster up to about the level of the 30 Carbine in modern rifles. Those loads will far outperform standard self defense handgun loads.
Well hell...In one short video you clearly demonstrated why I consider the 9 Minimal to be just that.....The absolute minimal personal and home defense caliber. You ALSO proved, to my satisfaction, as to why the three older gentlemen I have mentioned to you in several previous comments only own one rifle, two in .25-20 and one in .32-20, for deer, hog, ground hog and cayote hunting and/or control. They work!
I have a 1911 circa 92 Winchester in 25-20. When i bought it I got abought a half a box of factory 87 grain rounds for it. Couldn't get 25-20 brass for it so I formed my own out of 32-20 brass. I cast some bullets for it and loaded up ammo for it but haven't shot it to much. Gotta get it back out
Thankyou again for sharing these two intermediate rifle cartridges, although I have to wonder if the 9mm Parabellum would have done better out of a carbine? I still wouldn't expect it to reach the same velocity but it may gain another 100-150 fps.
We have a 32-20 that runs smooth and the bore shines. This winter I took the lever and bolt out of the gun, lubed and cleaned the action. It has a light but strong trigger so should be good home defense gun.
I have had 2 25/20's in my lifetime. 1 Winchester model 92 carbine (20" bbl) and a marlin model 1894 rifle (24" bbl). I still have the marlin. It was made in 1900. So is 123 years old. Had the bbl sleeved about 4 yrs ago and still shoot it. I reload so l have plenty of ammo. Make cases for it from 32/20's. Love the gun, only sorry l sold the winchester.
.25-20 (.257 caliber) 60gr doing a published speed of about 2100 fps, that's basically .22wmr velocity with double the bullet weight and 31% larger caliber. Nothing to complain about there! Starline still manufactures .32-20 brass, but not the .25, although one could always neck down the brass to .25.
Many years ago I read an article in a Brazilian weapons magazine about a modern target Taurus 32swl revolver, which had its chambers opened for the 32-20 caliber... using handloaded ammo, it had superior performance than the modern 327 Federal!
@@samuel-JF1981 Some .32-20 handloads exceed 2000 FPS with a 100 grain bullet so that's believable. Some factory loads are north of 1500 FPS even, but they are not safe for some rifles and hardly any handguns. I don't think they factory load HV ammo now for liability reasons.
I personally like these videos of Real Calibers that people can shoot as Opposed to all the Videos on the The behemoth calibers that only a tiny Percentage of the Lever action shooters actually shoot or even want to shoot ! How about more 38 special,44 special ammo and cast reloads for those Many who own the them especially with all the 38/357 Carbines that are out there used for Plinking and Home Defense use and hunting. I know that you like to reload ,how about some reloading articles with the ammo running subsonic for easy to shoot ammo that wont blow the shooters ear drums out when shot inxide the house from a rifle or carbine. Maybe a few video's about proper bullet alloy's for bullet expansion for such subsonic ammo ? It seems like the ' hard cast' bullet proponents have forgotton or never knew that Cast bullets do not have to be cast hard . Sure ,for punching holes in paper they work fine but for home defense or hunting the softer bullets are better. A cast bullet of 7-9 Brinell hardness will give expansion at less than 1,000 FPS whether a Semi wadcutter, round nose flat point or for more expansion a Hollow point. I am thinking that there would be quite a bit interest in such video's Anyway ,thanks for taking the time to read this and I enjoy your channel.
I like soft lead bullets myself powder coating them, allows you to shoot softer lead, not a fan of hard lead bullets because they don’t expand, plus most of these older style guns were made for soft lead bullets, because the bore was oversize compared to the chamber which is especially true on the 38-55, the biggest mistake modern shooters do is shoot hard lead bullets, and the bullets will never grip the rifle in properly because they’re under sized, where the softer bullets will expand out to fit the rifling and sealed up properly
This demonstrates what many of us know… that a rifle is always more effective than a handgun. There is no substitute for barrel length. The only downside of rifles they are not as easy to carry around.
Are you sure that vintage ammo isn't a high velocity load? Most of the soft points are high velocity and easily exceed 1500 FPS out of a rifle. And out of a handgun it usually causes them to explode.... hence why they don't offer them in factory loadings since the 1960s for the most part
Bought a92 in 25.20 for 200 bucks and a box of bullets for 200 bicks its not a carbine but a rifle with a 24 inch barrel that's not standard its rough can just make out serial number with when magnified 88111 at that nimbet i think that it didn't start out as a25.20
I’d like to tinker with some rounds for that 25-20. That would be interesting now. I can’t come up with a good reason for the 300 blackout. It seems bout useless to me. Oh well to each his own I reckon. Be safe brother and GOD BLESS y’all Amen 🙏
If I could find an open area long enough, I’m sure I could, in the book lever legacy he use the same kind of gun with lighter loads and said he can keep them on a 55 gallon drum at 1500 yards
I got practically a full box of that western 25-20 ammo and no gun been trying to figure out how I might trade it for something. Even the value of that ammo.
Yeah, I’ve had a few people argue with me that their pistol cartridges, and then I asked them to explain why they were first chambered in rifles by a company that built rifles
I have a .32-20 Remington rifle and S&W revolver. If you ever do get an old revolver be very careful what ammo you use, the high velocity loads will destroy most of them. I think the Ruger is about the only .32-20 revolver that is safe for HV loads.
Brother I was going to holler and say that bullet is probably hotter than a firecracker but to late. I’ve done that pick up a bullet I shot into something here one evening and I had a little round place on my palm where it burned me.
That wasn’t the intention of the video. The intention is only to see if the 3220 and the 2520 meet the minimal standard for self-defense which would be the 9MM.
