The Bank of Canada's decision to lower its benchmark interest rate Wednesday marked a significant turning point in its quest to tame inflation.
The key rate informs the cost of borrowing widely in Canada, including the rates Canadians pay on mortgages and loans.
It now stands at 4.75 per cent, following six consecutive holds in previous meetings.
Economist Angelo Melino breaks down the central bank's decision and how it intertwines with the latest Statistics Canada jobs report.

Just like they said recession was coming. And unemployment. And the markets crashing. Didn’t happen because we have competent economic policy.

@@patricktruelove464 Why is our dollar the lowest it's been in nearly 20 years? Why is productivity in such significant decline? Why is foodbank usage at record highs?

@@grandmufftwerkin9037 #3 Because there are more food banks. #1 and #2 are flat out wrong. Why was Canada ranked 2nd in the world for successful, desirable countries? (#1 was Switzerland btw, but imo we’re better.) Don’t believe every conservative who runs down our country for political gain. I’ll stop there and leave you in peace. Best wishes.

Where this economics professor honestly thinks wages are too high defies reality. I wonder if he has to spend 3 weeks wages per month just on a rent or mortgage every month.? Must be nice to have been an advisor to the Bank of Canada and getting pay increases well above inflation while the majority of the population suffers from a decline in real wages.

Money wages are nowhere near high enough, given the recent high levels of inflation. That's why unions are striking. To recapture purchasing power lost over the last few years

I predict some more inflationary pricing of real estate, along with a decline in the value of the Canadian dollar versus the US greenback. The recession is here, along with capital flight to lower-taxed jurisdictions.

It makes savers and retirees scream as their daily interest savings accounts fall in yield. The same is probably true for one year and possibly two year GIC rates.

I love it, lower it just in time for the CBSA goes on strike to wrap it up to start bringing it back up, but with the stuff going on in the world, the new pandemic around the corner... oh boy time to raise it 100 points yup we cut it 0.25 now we got to increase 100 fold

It means our imports will cost more. Since we import most of pur stuff from the US, our weak dollar will have less purchasing power. As of result, consumer goods will be more expensive.

Out of which side of his mouth is he talking, Canadian are feeling the pain of interest rates because Canada will not go against the culprit with huge debt and will punish Canada with exchange rate depreciation while Canadian are taken to the brink of bankruptcy and banks in USA and Canada are protected. Even if house prices rise which BOC has been unsuccessful in kerbing, Canada needs more housing. Remove obstacles for building and costs drained by local government charges and bylaws which add more cost to housing than the lowered interest rates. Ask a developer what it costs to lay the first bricks, somewhere around 30% of the building costs while we have drastic need for more housing. First time home owners simply are barred from entering market because the cumulative house price hike makes debt servicing impossible.

They're only lowering it in preparation for the mass of mortgages that come up for renewal in 25, 26, 27...knowing full well the banks will get slaughtered with defaults at present rates. Frankenomics...where economic fundamentals no longer apply.

With 5.1 percent wage gains it should lead to a wage, price spiral and higher inflation as the dollar falls assuming America rates stay static or rise. The same thing happened in the Volcker era in America when they cut interest rates too soon.

I'm an advocate for having a diverse investment strategy. I grew to a 7 figure mark with my portfolio having exposure to different areas of the market, including small and large-caps of the ETF index, blue chip stocks, coins, grade bonds and alternatives like cryptocurrency markets, as this helps manage the overall risk on my portfolio managed by my FA.. Credits to my adviser, Jeffrey, i have no doubt investing more
