How the electrical tester light works?
We know that any single phase device, needs a voltage difference between its terminals to be ON.
But with the tester, it is connected to the line from one side, and from the other side my finger, and even I wore an insulated shoes, the lamp light up.
It looks like the circuit was broken by the insulated shoes.
And if the circuit completed, why I didn’t get chocked by electricity.
To start, we need to know what is inside the tester,
Inside the tester you will find the neon lamp, connected with a very high ohm resistance.
Now we see the light is ON.
Let we draw the circuit.
The AC source.
The high ohm resistance.
The lamp.
Your body will be presented as a resistance.
The insolated shoes as a dielectric material, between two conductors.
Then the ground,
So the circuit is completed, and because of that the lamp will light up each time used on a live wire or outlet.
The internal high ohm resistance of the tester, limiting the current passing through the lamp and your body too.
In our circuit, all are connected in series.
That will make the voltage to be divided and will limit the current.
So with that limited current, you won’t be chocked, nor even feel the current passing through your body.

The most dangerous thing in the world? My daddy saw me with a nail playing with sockets and ran towards me to save me. he traded the nail with one of those. That thing you call neon tester here is called phase meter and is a life saver.

how does it test phase? rotation? wave? to be a meter it must be capable of a reading between zero and full.

I don´t think we complete the circuit with the ground. I even tried it with rubber shoes on top of a plastic chair on top of a wooden floor and it works. I think the body itself is capable of absorbing a certain amount of electrons, enough to make the neon bulb. light

because we act as a capacitor. You are right but the video is also right. We don't have to be touching directly to ground. We have parasitic capacitance.

So it can both ways when testing like this ? Through your body and then through the ground to complete the circuit.Or through your body and not through the ground ?
@chanrasjid8688
@chanrasjid8688 2 месяца назад
The video is correct that "the circuit is completed ... to the ground" as the rubber boots is a dielectric. Remember, our mains supply (single phase) has two wires, live and neutral. The neutral is connected to the earth; thus the neutral is also the earth. The rubber boots (including anything under the boots) acts as the "dielectric" between two conductors - you and the earth under your boots. The earth under your boots is the same "earth" of the neutral wire. Thus the circuit is complete from "earth" to "earth". In general this earth is a huge and very good conductor. Note, no electrons need pass through you rubber boots.

@@chanrasjid8688... Hi. I was already having a solid understanding of the concept you were explaining. BUT I lost it when you said electron movement is not needed between your body and the Earth... So how does that LED inside the screw driver work, if electrons don't move. (ultimately it just requires less than a few milli amps of current flow). I had never thought of electron movement until you mentioned. So please help me
@chanrasjid8688

@@gokul8370 Say you charge up a parallel plate capacitor with a 1.5V battery. The capacitor has 2 metal plates very close with rubber(dielectric, an insulator) between the plates. Electrons would flow from the +ve plate, thru battery, into -ve plate. Finally, you have excess electron in -ve plate, shortage of electrons in +ve plate. During charging, no electrons flow thru the rubber as it is an INSULATOR. In the test pen operation when it is touching the LIVE, "you" am one plate, the earth under your rubber boots is the "other" plate; the rubber boot is the dieletric. During the AC cycle When the live happen to be +240 VAC, electrons are removed from your body through the test pen; when live is at -240 VAC, electrons electrons flow into you from the test pen; but no electron passes through your boots at all as it is RUBBER. It is just your body inhale and exhale electrons which light up the LED.

@ijsbeermeneer9952
@ijsbeermeneer9952 4 месяца назад
You wont burst into flames, far from enough current to do that. And yes it will work when j stand in a bucket. The body and the ground work as a capacitor. Only an electric field goes thru, the elctrons themselves not.

im still confused about this thing.. how does earth, something that is usually not even required to light up a bulb, lights a bulb in the test pen?
@hosseinebrahimi3451
@hosseinebrahimi3451 2 года назад
Water analogy is convenient for this example. The live wire has a lot of pressure in it about 220 volt and wants to find a pass to release the pressure. There's a high value resistant in that tester behind the neon light that acts like a tiny hole for pressure to release. That small amount that goes through your body and release on earth is enough to light up the light. Another way to say it is: your body, your shoes and the high ohm resistant in the tester are in serries and divide the 220v between themselves. Your body 'cause has least resistance compared to two others receives the least share of the voltage.

How about if suddenly there is thunder ⚡ shoot at house electric wire and at the same time , I am touching the test pen and insert into socket Life hole . Then the electric current Ampere which pass thru my body , will be higher , then my body will be hurt by high current . Am I correct ?
@haikalmiftah2529
@haikalmiftah2529 8 месяцев назад
Probably yes. But is more likely any electric device plugged in at this point will explode first as it has far less resistant than test pen and human body. Or even better, the fuse installed in the house will shut any electric current down almost instantly

Not enough leakage current to trigger RCCB. But you can modify your test pen if you really want to do that. But be careful, you might kill yourself if your RCCB is faulty.

@SmaranSastry5521
@SmaranSastry5521 Год назад
Slippers insulate you from the ground and the electricity has no where to go. In a tester, if you insulate yourself from ground the light won’t glow because the electricity has nowhere to go to.
@chanrasjid8688
@chanrasjid8688 2 месяца назад
@@SmaranSastry5521 This is a dangerous comment. You may be wearing the best electrical safety rubber boots. If you touch the live 240V AC with your bare hands, you will get a very bad electric shock;you may still be killed if your hands somehow be in contact with the live wire for some time. With a test pen, the large resistor inside (probably + neon bulb) limits the current through your body. No electrons need to pass through your body through the rubber boots. Because it is AC, the amount of electrons in your body goes up and down and this "CAN KILL"
