After watching that damn movie at age 6, I couldn't even abide loud sounds associated with water-like toilet flushing or tub emptying for like a decade. Boomers didn't understand the new parental movie rating system any more than they understand computers today, and just took us to the movies to watch whatever. Jaws, Porky's, Freddy Krueger-if you are wondering why your Gen X parent is so weird about age restrictions on your games-this could be the reason. We all have PTSD. 😅 Blame Granny!

(From a Brazilian fan) Hello, Kristian. I'd like to thank you for your hard work. Ever since I was a kid, I have been struggling against an irrational fear of waters and everything related to them. I am even afraid to swim in a swimming pool if I am lone. When I go to the beach, I do want to enter the water, but I just can go until it reaches my shin. When I get closer to rivers or lakes, I just think about crocodiles and snakes, even though there are no crocodiles in Brazil. It is smothering. Since I started watching your videos, I became feeling more comfortable about the sea and its mysteries. I think it is time to change things. I saw those videos of people diving with nurse sharks and I do felt encouraged to do it. I am confident I will overcome this terrifying fear some day. Again, thank you so much for your great work. I cannot express how much you are helping me. Thanks!

It takes courage to overcome such a severe phobia. Please be kind and patient with yourself as you do this, not self critical. I had a severe fear of looking through a window at night or going outside alone. I can trace mine to a traumatic incident as a very small child when a man exposed himself against the window over my bed. It took finally learning from my mother what had happened, help from an excellent therapist, and determination (some might say my stubbornness) to overcome it. Most of the time I can enjoy looking out a window at night without anxiety and near crippling fear. Once in a while the fear comes back, but never at the intensity I experienced for much of my life. Wishing you the best of everything and a future full of joy as you free yourself of fear.

@@sharonkaczorowski8690 Hi, Sharon! Reading your comment made me feel relieved. Thanks for sharing it! I unfortunately cannot recall the episode (if there was an episode) which caused me such severe trauma. I do not know if the only way to overcome it is really entering the water or getting help from a therapist. Maybe both... I remember an episode where I kind of forced myself to swim in a lake with friends. I could feel my blood shaking in my limbs... Since I was afraid, I tried to let the water reach just my ankle, but, suddenly, I saw a silhouette of a crocodile in front of me. I ran to the car and there I stood until my friends came and asked me what had just happened. I know it might sound ridiculous or risible, but that is a good example to demonstrate my phobia. Maybe something happened when I was a child, but I cannot remember what exactly... Thank you again for your reply! Wish you all the best!

From the Wikipedia article of the 1916 Jersey Shore attacks: "In 2011, further study was conducted in the Smithsonian Channel's The Real Story: Jaws. The documentary takes a closer look at the series of events from different perspectives. It was demonstrated in the Matawan Creek attacks, for example, that the full moon of the lunar cycle, which would have coincided with the attacks, would have raised the salinity in the water by more than double just a few hours before high tide. This would support the theory that a great white could have been responsible. " I know it's very niche as it's specifically relevant to the discussion of which shark would end up in the Matawan Creek, so not sea water, but I still thought it'd be interesting enough to share. It's really interesting to see all the effects the lunar cycle has.

Sadly, no matter the quality of the camera on a mobile phone, it's impossible to take detailed photos of the moon. You would need an SLR camera, because you can control the shutter speed and aperture setting of the lens, which is not possible on a mobile phone. You can take really good photos of most other things, in daylight, but anything with a high contrast ratio, in the dark, is not possible without controlling the speed and aperture.

Love it. Really engaging. As you say, there are so many variables at play, it's hard to isolate the moon as a factor, but the evidence in favour is juicy, mysterious and interesting. Could all be down to statistics. More people in the water during the day = more shark attacks during the day. More people in the water when it's a full moon relative to a new moon because there's more light = more night shark attacks then. Keep up the great work.

@@archburglar8358 I'd be very, *very* surprised if it was ever more than sheer coincidence. I think we just hold on to the myth when we speak because our cycles - like the moon's - don't align with calendar months so there's a kinship we feel.

@archburglar8358 14 дней назад
@@denisha8596 There's a hypothesis that there may be some very old connection due to only having access to natural light. With more moon light perhaps being utilized to work and gather more, and with less moon light perhaps used for sex/pregnancy. Just a hypothesis though, and a pretty impossible one to test! I tend to agree, as most studies do, it's likely just chance.

Good video. I think it is a combination of reasons bringing sharks and human together for a bite. The change in the magnetic field could also wind the sharks up due to the sensory input. Not letting people swim in the sea around a full moon will surely decrease shark attacks during that time. Regarding the total number of shark attacks it might be a little over the top though.

Not a scientist but I do work in the water. Honestly after some thought I'd say it IS due to the visibility from the brighter moon but not in the obvious way. We're not a sharks first choice of prey, for most we're a new item. Maybe the moons brightness makes them feel safer to investigate that new prey? It wouldn't be enough to tell people not to swim at night but I'm sure a few sharks are more confident with better lighting.

It was interesting all the hypotheses around why there are more shark attacks around the full moon especially when they’re in the daytime. Are some of them at dusk? As Aussies we know that’s a more of a dangerous time. It makes sense that there would be more surfers too because of the waves. Time of year is important as if it’s hot summers, more people are swimming. I love that scientists do these studies. Is there one on why sharks attack kelp? Thanks - interesting. Even land animals can definitely sense tidal changes, many survived by escaping inland during the Asian tsunami in 2005.

@around 8:30, could it be that they require more calories to compensate for sleeping/hiding deeper in the water, and have to eat more in the day to compensate?

Ive been pondering a thought lately about The memory of sharks. We have all heard the old saying " memory like a gold fish" but , ive always wondered about these amazing animals ability to learn and memorize behaviour. In some cases , divers have reported that some sharks have shown to display signs of wanting affection and also bonding for years with the same divers almost as though they remember them personally. Your video regarding the moon been used as a gravitational compass for sharks makes alot of sense in migraine patterns which also means that this could disprove that sharks use memory for long migrations and instead use a built in compass helped by the moon. But... i am still very interested to know how well a sharks memory is. Besides a great white shark has a much larger brain than my cat Mojo but yet, Mojo knows exactly when its 5:30 bcos thats when she gets food. Weird right? Anyway Love the content as always and hope maybe sometime you can make a video explaining this question that keeps me up at night.

Could be worth having a watch of the Lemon shark creature feature we did a few weeks ago, some of your questions are considered in that episode. R.e your cat Mojo, despite having a smaller brain in terms of size, the actual make-up of Mojo’s mammalian brain is significantly more complex than the white shark. (One is not a more important species though because of it, just capable of doing different things).

Aside from the tides drawing in more surfers, it seems like there would be more people swimming on brighter nights.

Few people get bitten at night, simply because few people actually swim at night. The sharks are still there at night, but the people aren't.

Maybe the change in the electromagnetic field confuses the sharks? Maybe it disorients their senses slightly? Idk

I am absolutely fascinated by animals that use magnetic navigation like sharks and sea turtles. I mean that is absolutely mind blowing to think a turtle swims in some cases thousands of miles to lay eggs on the beach in which they were born.

Very sad. Unfortunately, shore fishermen are catching and releasing sharks for sport. Dragging sharks onto shore causes internal injuries.

I always kind of wondered if the moon affected sharks and rays not just in feeding but in mating habits, because the presumption would be that they would get their fill of prey which would cause maybe aggression to go down which would also cause receptive females to be even more receptive to a male's advances

Probably it is connected with more activity from surfers side - or is it possible that shark sensors are overwhelmed during that time and makes them disoriented a lil somehow?

I have heard that the terrestrial animal attacks was mostly due to the light makes it harder to hunt for ambush predators so they become hungrier and more desperate and therefore attack humans. If this is the case on land could it be the same for sharks?
@glass_jaws

Random thought. If prey are going deeper as the moon gets fuller, perhaps the sharks are attacking more due to hunger since their normal prey isn't available?

I mean personally... I feel like more people are probably in the water on a full moon since you can see better Im curious if the studies adjusted for per capita(?) sort of variable (Or if thats even possible) how do you record how many humans venture into the ocean on any given night, it wont be reported if its uneventful.

I imagine people are also more likely to go night swimming when there is moonlight, so that doesn’t help anyone except the sharks.

There have suggestions that the increased levels of blueish light affect the human mind, hence the increase of hospital, police and psych ward activity during that time. Hence the big bright moon makes it more attractive to go for a swim where the sharks are.

One little known made up fact is that during full moon, basking sharks open their mouths really big and then a dangerous shark jumps out of it. You see, basking sharks aren't sharks at all. They are just suits for other, more dangerous sharks, to wear further north. Like a space suit that they've made so they can move closer and closer to Sweden and finally get me.
