There is a complex system behind appointing referees in the Premier League. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) have a merit table that ranks the most trusted referees - and then assign them based on the biggest games. But there are other factors that influence a referees appointment. What are they? What is this merit table? How does a referee climb the merit table?

@@iwantgoals1566 there were none there because Clattenburg was the nominee. But he moved to Saudi Arabia. This process is done at least a year in advance and Clattenburg left just after the deadline, so the USA was chosen to send a second referee.

He's right, it is a big shift, and it takes time to move up the pyramid again as a main ref. Sure, Darren England and Martin Atkinson succeeded, but 35 is probably too old to make the change.

The ref didn't even bother to check the monitor since "it's already HT" even though players were surrounding him. Weeks before, United got a penalty after the FT whistle was blown.

If foreign players upped the quality of the premier league wouldn't foreign referees up the quality of officiating and help with bias issues cause you can tell refs like Craig Pawson and Mike Dean have bias issues

Ok, straight away I see the problem. Referees being able to see where they rank on that Merit Table can severely influence their performance, decision making and willingness to make important calls. That should absolutely only be something that the organisers have access too.

Mike Riley, who signed off on Rooney's dive, single-handedly ended the invincibles. On the pizzagate game, he missed Rio Ferdinand's red-card challenge on Ljungberg and another Van Nistelrooy's red-card challenge on Cole. Wenger criticised Riley's awarding 8 penalties to Man Utd in the preceding 8 matches at Old Trafford. Hence, now in 2020-2021, we have Arsenal suffering under VAR and a thriving Penchester united. Oh, TIFO, you are way too kind on Mike Riley.

3:20 Makes no sense, if Friend from the area of Leicester can't ref a Leicester game, why should Anthony Taylor from Manchester area referee a Manchester game (unless it's a Manchester Derby)? Let's not forget that Taylor awarded controversial game-changing decision in Man Utd's favour against Chelsea when Man Utd won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Great video but I'm not sure if I've missed an important point here, but I'm not sure if you have answered the question...you have explained how they rank within the table, but not how they are then selected from the table (besides their home address and team they support). Does the person ranked #1 automatically ref the most high profile match that week (assuming they're not excluded for the above reasons)?

Good video done by Tifo. My issue with all this is why the PGMOL and match officials are not transparent with all of this. There is no accountability to the public as fans keep wondering if they are being shafted by referees’ decisions. Referees should be mic’ed up like they did in the A league with one official. Let fans hear what is the thinking behind the decisions, their communication with the linesman and VAR. Also consider publishing these referee evaluations in order to determine PGMOL’s stance on decisions and whether they deem a referee’s decision correct or not. That could help reduce the heat on referees.

What about the EFL? Back in 2017 Newcastle were in competition for automatic promotion with Huddersfield. We play Preston I think and the Ref for our game was a Huddersfield fan! Rafa complained and got penalised for it??

Referees and commentators/analysts dont understand how people fall. Literally 90% of free kicks players are diving or simulating now and its beyond a joke. I dont think theres a single winger other then messi who isnt hardwired to pull his own legs from under him when he gets into or around the box. The game is absolutely at the moment

Yes, but falling unnaturally after you've been fouled doesn't undo the foul, so as long as referees are capable of making that distinction, it hardly matters how a player falls.

@@rjfaber1991 they shouldn't be falling over for 90% of the "fouls" tho. The games become so watered-down and soft that its embarrassing to be a football fan. If you ever watch football with non football fans they thats the thing they focus on 90% of the time. Someone who spends their whole life running should not be going down when they're running at high speed after someone lightly brushes their shoulder. That's not how momentum works.

@@dickthehead1145 That's as may be, but it never has been physics that dictate how a footballer falls, it's the rules of the game. If falling naturally or managing to stay up means you don't get a free kick you'd otherwise be entitled to, you'd be foolish not to exaggerate the fall.

@@rjfaber1991 youre not entitled to anything, arguments like this are why football is becoming more and more sterile. Wingers specifically are absolutely embarrassing at this point. Players like Sterling and Neymar or alot of the time salah or hazard aren't dribbling in a way to get past their man anymore theyre just trying to get into a position where they can convincingly dive. Throwing yourself past, or into defenders shouldn't be a legitimate tactic and yet it is. You shouldn't be rewarded for knocking the ball into an area where you'd never reasonably get it so you can throw yourself into a defender (cough cough, Harvey Barnes) or crab walking into to box and going down like you've been shot even though YOU CHOSE to put yourself into that position. Defenders should not be punished for attackers gaming the rules.

@@dickthehead1145 Fair enough, but if that's the way you look at this, it seems to me you have more of a problem with the rules than with the way they're being enforced.
