After seeing my reviews of the Xiegu X6100, a viewer suggested I might try the Xiegu X5105 as well. So, I asked my friend, Jason, from Ham Radio 2.0 if I could barrow his. After receiving it, I have taken it out in the field a few times only using phone. This video includes my first attempts at using the X5105 for CW.
I like a few things about this radio, but did run into some problems. There will be a follow-up video to this one with my final thoughts on the radio.
For this video Brian W7JET and I drive to the Sierra Ancha Wilderness and activate 2 summits (I did not capture video of the third summit).

Thank you for showing subtitles for the Morse, and for showing the mistakes as well (even if they are due to the radio). As a newbie to CW, it helped a lot to decipher the code, and get a feel for an actual QSO.

My pleasure - this is probably the most frequent and consistent feedback I receive from my viewers. Thanks for the expression of appreciation. I'll continue following this model. And thanks for watching.

Well done to you both. The Xiegu transceivers seem popular and looks like you get a lot of radio for the money. Having the CW text on the video is useful. Keep up the good work and all the best. 73 Chris M0RSF

Great video, Charlie. I just lent my X5105 out to a friend who's going to Ireland for a few weeks. I haven't had the keyer issues you had, but my orientation is the default and I'll admit that I've gotten a bit used to the Xiegu keyer spacing nuances. You were having proper problems on the summits, though. One thing I really dislike about the X5105 is using earphones in the field. The audio is so rough and unrefined I find it really fatiguing. It's noisy compared to my other radios. At the end of the day, though, I still kind of like it even though I don't use it as much as some of my other radios. Looking forward to your final thoughts! 72!

Thanks Thomas. Yes, I can live with most of the nuances of the radio. But there are a few things that are concerning. It's an interesting journey learning a radio and exploring it to see if it's a good fit for you. I'm sure there will be some who whole heartedly agree with my findings and some who will not agree at all. But it was fun to use it for a while regardless. Thanks for dropping by.

73 Thanks for video. I have X5105 and device has desperate cw. Its about monitoring.. if you are listening yourself on another rx .. there is no problem. Strangely, no one says that the device is defective.!! Xiegu doesn't seem to be aware of this problem. I solved this problem puttying V 1.0.06 firmware. (old one) and it is usable now. Some others guys depending on the board solved with new firmware V3.0 ?!?! all other things on the X5105 are fine. I like to us it on SOTA. Ivica 9a6cw

Thank you for sharing this information, Ivica. My next video coming out this week talks more about this. You are so right about CW being an issue, and also correct that most other things are fine. I'm glad you posted this information!

My (nearly)three year old X5105 is running the latest firmware and doesn't exhibit those issues with paddles. The audio does, however, get a bit nasty if there's even a little RF on any cable plugged in to the headphone jack. It's done that since day one. It's still a good workhorse of a radio. Mine is on its second battery...

I'm hopeful this will be my findings eventually, after obtaining a different radio with the latest firmware. One more video with those results yet to come. Thanks.

I’m very disappointed with the audio quality. Tremendous noise. My cheap Bitx40 40 meter kit has almost audiophile quality compared to the 5105. It is an all analog radio except for the dds. It cost $55. The multi band version (ubitx) is about $150 for the boards assembled and $209 with a case. It plugs together no soldering. It has it’s issues but audio quality isn’t one of them. Yes I like the tuner and swr scam on the Xiegu. Hopefully some of the issues will be fixed in firmware. The ubitx is built using 1970s tech but it’s pretty amazing for the money and price. Hope to update my Xiegu firmware soon 73s

Thanks for your thoughts Tech Guy (don't know your name). I have a Bitx40 kit that still hasn't been removed from the packaging. Gotta get on that.

@@RedSummitRF The early bitx 40 had a varactor vfo that drifted. The later ones had a dds. I used a dds kit from qrp kits for my early unit. The bitx 40 is built with 2n3904 transistors (surface mount).

I finally got a cable and upgraded to 3.0. That helped receive quite a bit from the 1.0 it had when I got it

I never tried it with a paddle but I had success with a straight key on manual on 15 wpm. The reverse beacon network copied my call sign OK.

Hi Sarah - yes, I think this is consistent with my findings too. The straight key doesn't use the keyer, which is the root of my problem, I think.
