This was a house I saw come up for sale in my market. I had to check it out since it is right next to one of the flips we did years ago and because it has 11 bedrooms!

Many of those places get a lot of bad press. I'm sure the vast majority have credible and honest management, but there's enough very very bad ones that get too much media and state investigator visits. Guess it wouldn't be Mark's problem if he just bought, rehabbed, and sold it though. Personally from a moral and ethical standpoint I wouldn't want my name associated in any way with it.

My guess, also. I think the size of the bedroom allows for master bedroom and the other two could easily fit 2 bunk beds with doubles on the bottom or a single with slide out bed. That’ s 6+ children to a room minimum so as many as 12+ children to a mom. If any are 15ftx10, you could do double bunk bed with a double slide out fitting 10+ per room. Not safe but possible. I saw on home on RU-vid with H&W with 6 children in a 10x12 room. 3 sets of bunks, 1 set to a wall, window in the middle of the wall. Each bunk had curtains for privacy. They lived and homeschooled in a 2 bedroom home.

My cousin rented a house like this for a family vacation a few years back. The listing said it had eight bedrooms. Since there were eighteen of us, that seemed perfect. Photos looked nice, although not all the bedrooms were shown. So, we get there. The house has THREE legal bedrooms. There’s a small room off the kitchen that has a bed in it but no closet and door! Obviously it was meant to be a study. That’s "bedroom four." The garage has a bed in it…"bedroom five." Downstairs in the basement there’s a hallway between the two legal bedrooms on that level. Said hallway has two bunk beds in it. That would make it "bedroom six." Where are the last two bedrooms? We couldn’t find them. Called the homeowner. Turns out bedrooms seven and eight are the CLOSETS in the two basement bedrooms. These people put double beds inside two walk-in closets and called them bedrooms! Granted, they were very large closets, but they definitely did not meet the definition of a "bedroom" by any stretch of the imagination. As we were out in a rural area and it was the week of Christmas, we couldn’t find alternate accommodations. We all just piled into this house. Children were in grandparents’ closets. Adults on bunk beds in a hallway. I slept on a futon in the garage. It was 28° outside overnight so that was fun. Best of all? The only bathrooms in the house were three en suites in the three legal bedrooms. You could not get to a bathroom without walking through someone’s bedroom. We didn’t even realize this until we’d settled in. I kept looking for a half-bath somewhere in the house. Nope. The homeowners acted offended when we complained about the factually incorrect listing. According to the company that hosted the listing, only legal bedrooms could be called bedrooms in the listing. We pointed this out to the homeowners. They told us to leave if we didn’t like it. Now, some of the blame fell on my cousin, who found and rented the place. She didn’t notice that only three bedrooms were pictured on the site, nor did she notice that there was only one review of the house. That review was mostly positive, so obviously they hadn’t had eighteen people trying to stay there. But the homeowners flat-out lied about the number of bedrooms. Yes there were enough BEDS for eighteen people, but the listing said eight BEDROOMS. We stayed the week. Had a fun time. The house was on a beautiful river so it was pretty outside, even if it was too wet and cold to enjoy being outside. And we got our money back afterwards when we reported the house to the company. We had photos to show beds in closets, hallway, garage… I’d say it was a good value for $0. The house in this video here just triggered that memory.

@@ThE4EvRPs3GaMeR sweetie, we had nowhere else to go. We had traveled from different parts of the country. None of us lived nearby. We were in a rural area without hotels nearby. We attempted to find alternate accommodations in the area but, seeing as how it was the week of Christmas, there wasn’t anything available. We made the best of it. We also did not request our money back; we reported that the listing was fraudulent. The company refunded our money after reviewing the information that we gave them. I guess you’re the kind of person who believes it’s OK to falsely advertise your product and then blame the customer for buying it and expecting to get what they were told they’d get. Trump called. He wants you to give him more money to cover his legal expenses, given that you’re a good MAGA lapdog.

We call our house “The Dollar Tree Winchester House” 😆 It’s 6,000sf, 3 kitchens, 6 bedrooms, 3 living rooms, 1 family room, 2 fireplaces, 3 acres. I think it started as a 2 bedroom in 1958. Inside windows always interesting. Unless you are a big family with young kids, this house would be awkward. If you think about it, if it’s a college rental, you could potentially have between 11 and 22 occupants at one time, if everybody has a significant other. A lot of sub panels, I noticed. I think a house like this would be nothing but red flags.

My understanding is that to be a bedroom, it has to have a closet and direct egress to the exterior as a fire escape. So, any room with a window that opens into an addition probably should not be considered a bedroom. Also, it looks like a carport was enclosed to make it a garage. To meet most fire codes, it should not have a window and the common walls and ceiling should be 5/8" drywall. Also, a window can allow carbon dioxide into the house if an engine is running in the garage.

@steves9905 I had neighbors who were at one time doing the exact same thing. The wife worked, while her husband-who fancied himself a "minister"-took in scads of foster kids in order to pay their mortgage and other expenses. They even did an illegal "flip" of the garage in order to make room for even MORE foster kids. They were on easy street until all the kids grew up and were on their own, then they could no longer meet their household expenses (although by that time the husband was on Disability), and they wound up losing their house.

Sorry. But what is wrong with a foster family asking for a car or trips? It is a LOT of work looking after forster kids, they need many more social worker, doctors, therapist, court appointments than regular children. A car can be really helpful for a foster parent. Holidays are expensive, if some company wants to give free trips let them. Give them some nice childhood experiences too. Trips are important way to expose kids to new stuff and get them to think about different types of careers for when they are older.

Growing up I dated a girl who lived in a house exactly like this with 13 bedrooms. There wasn't a single foot of living space and the entire house was just 13 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and a kitchen for each floor. It was a tri level house. Main floor, upstairs and basement. She was Mexican and 12 different families lived in the house. Each bedroom had 3-4 beds and a total of 41 people lived in the house. It was the most insane thing I've ever seen in my life. Everyone just hung out in their bedrooms all day long when they weren't working or cooking or out back. There was several elderly ladies, all grandmas of different families that all seemed to be cooking every meal imaginable the entire day so i was fed like a king when I was there. There were always 10-15 guys in the backyard drinking beers and they had an entire section of the yard dedicated to empty beer cans that was piled up probably 8ft tall and 30ft wide. No joke, it was the biggest pile of aluminum cans that I've ever seen in my life. I spent a lot of time over there because I was 13 and apparently old enough to drink because they always gave me beer so i was making every excuse to go over😂😅

It's unique! It could be used for some sort of group living situation. I think the layout is too complicated for the elderly - they'd get lost - but housing for the homeless might work. The bedrooms are mostly adequate for doubles, and perhaps a cluster of three rooms and one of the smaller kitchens could comprise an apartment for a family. There's a shortage of bathrooms. The biggest hurdle would be complying with all the relevant zoning, building and fire codes!

I think it would be perfect as a "hotel" for guests. Maybe work with certain [places like Funeral Homes, Wedding Planners, Churches (for Baptisms) to house people from out of town. Get to know some Doctors and Lawyers. Maybe some states witnesses or patients family could stay there? The possibilities are endless.

That house would make a lot more sense in a college town. I lived in one like it in New Orleans. I was the only one not in law school, so it was quiet times at the home place.

Lol, every one of my grandparents and even my wife's grandparents all had ancient houses with multiple additions. Most bedrooms came with windows looking into other rooms. Be it the garage, den, kitchen... I thought it was really cool when I was a kid 😂.

I wonder how much was done without a permit, and how much would have to be undone to be up to code.

I would designate each floor (area) to a bathroom and kitchen. But still rent out as individual rooms. To people who have no cars. or have someone there have 1 car or 2 and its shared for trips to get grocery stuff, work etc No one has to be social with others if they don't want to be etc Like a dorm for adults outside of school lol Definitely would help out a lot of people in this economy

Seems like a family unit lived there. Normal door hardware, not heavier lock sets you'd see in a shared situation. Tile work if done well was likely someone's occupation and this was leftovers from jobs because of the variety. The amount of stairs make it concerning for older people. No elderly bashing ;) I'm 70 and still do multiple flights of stairs a day, but I feel them.

Contact some caregiving businesses. We worked for a company that took care of Downs people and others with brain damage, that sort of thing. One of our homes was a five bedroom convent that had closed. Your house could easily be made into two houses with space for a locked medication room. It’s generally four clients per house plus a med room/office.

With so many rooms and easy to clean tile floors I wondered if this were a sort of care home for disabled or elderly, but I don't see any grab bars in the bathrooms, and the multiple levels would be an issue for anyone with a walker, wheelchair or balance issues. Very unusual place though...huh.

Definitely a former group home or halfway house or inpatient/rehab property; a chance it's a modern tenement. I highly doubt this was a (extended) single-family home since it's original owner. Everything was definitely done and run off the books as nothing about this property would pass inspection (or even floor plan filing). Would be a nightmare to sell - no title insurance for a normal buyer would cover this.
