The dutchess is one of the creepiest illustrations in any literature I’ve ever seen and has haunted me ever since I first read Alice in Wonderland when I was 7 years old. Matsys’ grotesque Dutchess is even more disturbing.

This is one of my favourite paintings. I have her postcard, bought from the gallery, as she assists me in pondering upon life... Such an emotive painting. Thank you for sharing her as many just walk past with a giggle or uncomfortable glance.

i agree it is a transfixing, gorgeous and respectable painting full of mastery. if the duchess were transformed into a beautiful, young form of herself she'd have qualities like the lovely restorer, which makes watching & listening to her appreciate the piece the way it deserves all the more enchanting

I bet Leonardo da Vinci just did it for giggles, but now people look at it critically like it's a masterpiece, though I do admit it's very good.

I am wondering why modern pigments (e.g. Cadmiums) are used to restore the background? Wouldn’t you want to keep with the pigments available at the time? Thank you for bringing this knowledge to the public. It increases appreciation for the arts.

I'd be nice to see the raking light of the final painting and the back of it. Did you choose a 3d-movement backing support like the Durero's "Addam" in the Prado Museum (Spain) or did you leave it with nothing?

Hands are indeed one of the more intimidating subjects to paint. One has to wonder about the choices that went into the creation of headgear in ages past.

La mano appoggiata oltre ad essere simile a quella del dipinto del 1513, si nota un richiamo alla mano di un dipinto di Antonello da Messina.

Surprise to see the duchess here. I saw the original in the Prado in Madrid in 2018. The story is that she lived in the same neighbourhood as Leonardo and he disliked her very much because she was a gossip and a disruptive influence in the community. He made this caricature of her and Massys made an oil painting many years later.

Are you going to put another cradle on the back to preserve the square shape or put on a wood frame? How will painting stand on its own?🇺🇲
@nationalgallery
@nationalgallery Год назад
Hi @Candy Newton, thank you for your question! Although the panel has been thinned, it is painted on very high quality Baltic oak and unlikely to take up more than a very slight curvature. It is now stable and self-supporting so does not require a new fixed auxiliary support, it is however housed within a frame and this does give additional support for handling and during display. If you're interested in art restoration and conservation videos you can find more on our channel.

There is a roof boss of the same shape and sex as this Duchess in Wantage parish church. This would have been known to Lewis Caroll under his Oxford personality.

She might have had a lighter background because she is lit with direct light which casts strong shadows. The man as far as I can see doesn't share her shadows.

Wonders never case! The 'restorer' explains everything very well, but her 'palette' appears a very 'limited' and somewhat 'simple' formula for an Old Master painting---one would have assumed that there were several 'glazes' to build up to the final finish. Otherwise a 'treat' to all art lovers fascinated (as were the Italian Renaissance artists) by the portrayal of character in old people's faces!

i don't understand how removing parts of the picture, to suit modern taste, can be conserving ? That's editing ? Is it not possible that picture was part of a larger scene, and now it has been successively pruned to lose all the original meaning and balance ? We don't rebuild battle ruined castles or add parts to archaeological fragments....
