Some thoughts about helping dogs learn to concentrate under high levels of environmental distraction.
This channel is devoted to providing a window into the life of professional dog trainer, Stonnie Dennis. I talk about dog training, boarding, health, equipment, and all the things that go into owning and running a successful dog training and boarding kennel.
At our kennel we place special emphasis on helping dogs reach their full potential through the use of physically and mentally demanding activities. Our primary goal is to help families raise happy, healthy, well socialized, canine companions.
We especially love training Labrador Retrievers, so don't be surprised when you see Labs of every age, size, shape, and color!!!

The little yellow lab playing in the snow on the table is adorable! I love how all the dogs follow you so nicely.

My dog name female Oreo and she love going to her park cause she chasing Squirrels all day ! I don't mind her loose she need to come to me when I call her name to come ! But she don't bother other dogs or children but someone can take her away from cause she's a friendly dog! So since she don't listen to me I keep her on the leash! We only had her only a two months! My son got her from a Philadelphia shelter ! Oreo is pittbull and I'm glad we have her as family pet! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

So true. I used to believe I shouldn't let my dog socialise too much with other dogs in case my dog preferred playing with other dogs to hanging out with me. As you so rightly pointed out, the opposite is true. Scarcity = novelty = curious dogs. If all your dog does is hang out with other dogs when you come on the scene, your dog thinks "yeah, I'm bored of you lot, I want some dad time". It was just me being insecure all along.

It might not be super easy to simulate this kind of training if you only have one dog, but I appreciate this video because it offers a wonderful alternative to using aversive methods like an e collar. I got a golden retriever 8 months ago and using an e collar makes no sense for me - I love that she loves people and has enthusiasm for her surroundings. If I wanted a dog that was only ever interested in me, I could have got a chihuahua.

That’s a great way to think about it. I’m happy to have a dog (lab pup) who’s naturally bold, happy and confident in new environments, even if he does require some extra obedience training 😁 Thanks for the perspective

It looks to be a black german shepherd, slightly more rare but not so much anymore. Its being bred more often these days. I didnt see the curled tail, but its probably a defect or something But the size, face, body shape and ears scream german shepherd. Check out "germanshepherdman" RU-vid. He has a badass black german shepherd name sgt. Came from Germany. Very well trained

Stonnie, love your training techniques. I have a dog (Belgian Laekenois) that is very reactive to other dogs, cats, remote controlled cars etc. Could you help her with your board & train program? We've tried group lesson, private trainers coming to our home, giving her a job. She just can't get over the "hump". We live in the Charlotte, NC area.

Put down some 3M decking tape, used for the decks on boats, and that should help keep the dogs from slipping on the equipment.

We have a beautiful GSD who is heads and tails better behaved than our GSP ever was BUT our neighbors are terrified of him. I like your training videos and am looking specifically for boundary training. Our neighbors threatened to call the police if he enters their yard & we share a property line. Ugh! And we really don't want to put in a fence.

In a high distraction environment, like at the dog park, my dog has zero interest in treats or attention from me. He just wants to run away and play with other dogs and get involved if anyone gets in any fights and has zero recall. Other dogs are much more rewarding and important to my dog so idk how to fix that.

@brianfuller5868

I'm new to the channel and have a question. A family friend who's trained dogs for 30 yrs says that humans don't train dogs to use a skill since the dogs have instinct . Humans train the dog to both do what it likes and take commands . She says Rule 1 is let the dog work, part. with search dogs. Handlers must trust the dog. She looks for dogs with intelligence and a strong prey lnstinct. You want a dog who won't give up but will circle back to find a scent - w/o the handler prompting. What do you think?
@StonnieDennis
@StonnieDennis 6 лет назад
Here's the thing about people who are so quick to talk about "rules". What about the millions of awesome dogs that have been raised without adhering to those particular "rules"? There's lots of ways to skin a cat and even more ways to tell the story...

@myanimals3951
@myanimals3951 3 года назад
Make distractions
@pantherowl3169
@pantherowl3169 3 года назад
If you take your dog to places like the park or even during walks, you can do this. Make sure to bring lots of really good treats and try to make yourself fun and interesting. You can also do this during play by incorporating as many commands as you can. For example, my dog loves the Frisbee. Sometimes I will make her sit for it. Then she has to run up me to get it. Now she has to wait here. Okay now come and get it. Okay wait here again. Then you play red light green light with "come" and "stay". Now drop it. Leave it (even though I'm acting crazy with it and you can't play with it yet)

Isn’t this pushing the myth of “eager to please” and altruistic dog behaviour?
@StonnieDennis
@StonnieDennis 5 лет назад
Boglenight How so?
@boglenight1551
@boglenight1551 5 лет назад
Stonnie Dennis Working for attention seems to be synonymous with eager to please.
@StonnieDennis
@StonnieDennis 5 лет назад
Boglenight Ah, I see what you are saying. I’m not sure that true altruistic behavior exists at all, to be honest; in people or dogs. But, what we can develop are intrinsically motivating behaviors, or habits that end up being mutually beneficial.
@boglenight1551
@boglenight1551 5 лет назад
Stonnie Dennis Ah, so what you’re saying is that attention gaining is a habit learned as they hope it’s accompanied by a beneficial result as it usually is, play, food, etc. So, wouldn’t the motivation strength of gaining attention be tied to the usual result and if there’re irregular responses or responses that ‘aren’t good enough’ then the motivation to get attention would dwindle?
@StonnieDennis
@StonnieDennis 5 лет назад
It's not so easy to put in a box. There's no way to put behavior in a box and establish clear cut casual relationships between stimulus, behavior, and expected results. Dogs are exactly like people. Think about why you do things. Now apply that same process to dogs; no difference. You may just be thinking on a slightly more complex level.
