The great thing about Godzilla is that he's an everything character. He can be a hero, villain, simple animal, cartoon character, or supernatural horror and it all works. Anyone trying to say Godzilla can only be one thing just doesn't understand the character.

It's really funny how he brags about how much he's researched Godzilla but gets so much wrong. Sometimes people want dramatic political commentary movies but sometimes people also just want to watch two giant kaiju fight and destroy stuff and they can BOTH be popular

you know something is wrong when toho and even the director of minus one showed more respect for the monsterverse than half of the character's fanbase.

It's triggering that he forgets the Heisei and Millennium films while using footage from those movies (He also forgot Shin Godzilla while using footage from that movie as well.)

MonsterVerse Godzilla isn't a hero or villain. He's an animal/monster. The king of the monsters tries to protect his home/kingdom. We just view MonsterVerse Godzilla as their protector, and he strongly dislikes humans but rather acknowledges humans.

I feel like the guy hasn't even watched the monsterverse movies.. like even in 2014 the military were still wearily of Godzilla and it kinda shows in Godzilla king of the monsters where the military went as far as to use the oxygen destroyer on him and king Ghidorah. Either way legendary Godzilla is meant to keep balance of the earth making sure the other titans don't cause havoc on the planet, if humanity choose to attack him then that's really on humanity choice.

Not gonna lie. When I watched the video for the first time, I noticed he didn't research the topic. He missed out on so many key moments in the Godzilla franchise and blamed the goody nature of the Monsterverse on the US. Yes, the Monsterverse is goofy, no one can't deny that. But it is clearly a love letter to those old 60's Godzilla movies. And it's ok to have a cool Godzilla that fights monsters. Most of us G-fans, fell in love with the character when we were kids watching Godzilla fight his enemies (Myself included). The older I've gotten, the more I have appreciated and loved Godzilla. He's a character that grows alongside you. I bet you a million dollars that the director of Godzilla: Minus One, grew up with Godzilla the same way we all did. And the older he got, the more appreciation he had for Godzilla.

Skipper's comment about the US military was also kind of befuddling. While I won't pretend like there isn't any military industrial complex propaganda in Hollywood films, I barely seen any in the Monsterverse. 9 times out of 10, the US military is presented as a bunch of bumbling idiots that just get in Godzilla's way and make things worse. At best, they occasionally irritate or distract the antagonist Kaiju, usually getting decimated in the process. Which, by the way, is exactly what happened to the Japanese military in the original films!

We all know Godzilla Minus One is pretty obviously amazing, but just because it’s one of, if not the best Godzilla movie overall never meant Godzilla won’t work in other remasters. You made a ton of good points in this video, and it’s a shame to see other people like this crap on the American movies when each movie is targeted towards different audiences. It’s nice to see someone defending the American movies and less serious and dark movies, because all Godzilla movies are good in their own way.

To be fair, the monsterverse actually DOES have meaning. Based mostly off of KOTM, Godzilla is representative of the hope humanity has against it’s own destruction through global warming, although it is lost to a degree in that movie. Every godzilla has a meaning and represents something, which is what makes him beautiful as a character and a franchise

I don't support gatekeeping, but casuals like skipper who are clearly not fans of godzilla (both before and possibly after seeing minus 1) acting like they know the entire franchise/character based off minus 1 and gojira alone (while simultaneously ignoring the rest of the franchise) make it so easy to possibly gatekeep them or tell them how flawed their logic is. I’ve seen all live action Godzilla movies. And the MV hate is completely unjustified and hypocritical. People who hate on it only bring up Shin Godzilla, the original, and Minus One. They completely forget that the MV takes a lot of elements from the Showa and Heisei era. And that Toho themselves have done so many different things with the character. MV has brought in so many new fans to the franchise (including myself), while paying respects to the IP and the character. What more could you ask for from Godzilla movies?

I’m soo happy u brought up how versatile Godzilla is cause that’s what I’ve been saying countless times. We all know the MV isn’t perfect and has problems that need to be fixed but Godzilla doesn’t have to have a serious tone every single time. If it did that for 70 years it was just get stale so it’s nice that the franchise has actual variety. It’s not perfect but it’s not bad and it’s still enjoyable.

I saw the title of Skippers' video and thought it was going to be horribly wrong but good Godzilla is he getting so much stuff wrong it almost feels deliberate like there's a punchline at the end where he reveals he was just goofing off the whole time. I'm largely on the outside, my first experience of Godzilla was morning TV where he was literally a button-press win in every situation. And as for Godzuki? Well, less said the better. It wasn't till later I learned the larger context of the character, though I am by no stretch 'well-versed'. But _that's_ the thing. To me, Godzilla is a brand, you could get away with 'Godzilla on Ice', even in Japan, because the character can, indeed, be what you want it to be, depending on the audience, Godzilla can be everything from a kids party mascot to terrifying blood-vomiting monstrosity. And for Godzilla, that's a really really good thing, as you say that flexibility is what has helped the character survive for nearly three quarters of a century.

To clarify, in regards to japanese ip, something becomes public domain 70 years after the creator has died. 3 people, tomoyuki Tanaka, Eiji tsuburaya, and ishiro Honda are credited as the creators of godzilla. The last of the 3 died in 97, meaning godzilla won't become public domain until 2067.

I’m a thirty two year old from England, I’ve loved Godzilla since around the age of eight. Granted the first American attempt at Godzilla wasn’t anything great but the Monsterverse is so fun! I remember when I was younger I’d be embarrassed to like Godzilla like it was a guilty pleasure but now it’s cool to. The franchise weather in Japan or in the States is great right now!

"Godzilla is back to his origins, he is supposed to be the symbol of the horror of atom bomb like in the first movie, not a goofy kaiju fighter" godzilla returned to his origins much before minus one, shin godzilla is the biggest example, don't act like that movie doesn't exist. What kind of story you expected from a movie where the main focus was godzilla and kong fighting? Not everything needs to be a masterpiece of narrative and deep writing to be fun and interesting. There are times where all a movie needs to be good is to have well done fighting scenes. If things worked like that then pacific rim would be a bad movie because "too much monster fighting and barely any deep or complex story". Comparing completely different movies with completelly different ideas and porpuses never ends well. Comparing Monsterverse with the '54 movie is like comparing Coca cola with cakes just because both of them have sugar.

Some notes- the reason Godzilla went from a terrifying monster to a heroic monster has more to do with its director Ichiro Honda. He has stated, numerous times, that when he saw that Godzill was becoming more popular for children was to purposefully tone down the scarrier elements to keep the charactrr friendly to the children, but also maintaining a more adult storyline in the human side of the story. If course it was all cheesy fun, but there is some serious talent behind the camera and in the writing, even at its Showa era silliest. Godzilla didnt have much competition from TV until the mod to late 60's when Ultra Q, Ultraman, and Kamen Rider became popular. In fact the studio that made the Ultra series was founded by Eiji Tsubariya, who got his start in special effects working with Honda on films prior to Godzilla (Gojora). Toho as a studio in the 50's thru the 70's was far more well known for making serious samurai dramas and light hearted comedies. The kaiju and Godzilla films were popular, but they were far down the rankings in terms of numbers compared to their other films. It was mostly the love producer Tomoyuki Tanaka and Ichiro Honda had for sci fi and monster films in general that kept them being made. Believe it or not, Godzilla movies were originally seen as almost being protest movies and very much a part of a counter culture movement in Japan than mainstream movies. Big Action Bill here on RU-vid has an excellent break down history of each Godzilla movie and I highly recommend his videos if you really want to learn about the entire Godzilla franchise.

I should've did a double take when he said "I personally don't like Godzilla" when I watched that video. Honestly 90% of it was just Doktor Skipper droning on and on about "America Bad! MIC bad! War bad" like it was just a bunch of redundant "iam14andthisisdeep" truisms that can be applied to literally anything. Yet for some reason he found it profound just because it has to do with the US, completely ignoring the fact that every Godzilla movie/series doesn't need to have "deep social commentary."

I like Godzilla minus one, but it doesn't have the same feel or appeal as MV Godzilla does it's just the original film remade. It's good but not as good as MV Godzilla it's the same story being retold, just a bit different, and I never liked the first Godzilla movie, just the ones after it. It honestly didn't even seem like it was a part of the other's until Tokyo s.o.s and Godzilla against Mechagodzilla really tied it to them. And my god, Shin is just awful and stupid as hell he's the red headed step child of the 100th cousin 100 times removed, and the same is true for Singular point the most awful versions and movies/shows tied to Godzilla.

I love Legendary Godzilla and I love Minus One, I just love Kaiju and monsters in media in general

Godzilla can mean different things to different people. And there’s so many different designs of him. His movies are separated by Japanese emperor eras. It’s really up to the viewer on what they prefer. For me, I think Gojira 1954 and Minus One 2023 are the two greatest Godzilla movies ever made. I think 2023 takes the cake as it’s basically a modern reboot of 1954. But my favorite might be MV because I find it to be more fun and even silly. I currently own two Godzilla toys. One is G89 by Art Spirits. The other is Hiya G21 V2. I was NOT a fan of MV Godzilla’s design early on but it grew on me and I now rank it 1st or 2nd for best Godzilla designs ever. While I probably rank G23 about 3rd. When I first saw Godzilla vs. Kong on my phone about 3 years ago, I didn’t watch it for the humans. I only wanted to watch Godzilla and Kong beat the living shit out of each other! It did not disappoint. I’m excited for GxK so I can watch more giant lizards and apes kick each other’s ass! 😂 So I finally came around to watching the final three episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and it definitely ended on a high note. *Mari* *Yamamoto* as *Keiko* *Randa* killed it in the last episode. A very realistic and emotional reaction finding out how 56 years had just passed and not 57 days. Monarch finally improved the human element from MonsterVerse. The part with Godzilla didn’t feel necessary. It was almost randomly added onto it so we can see the Big G kick ass. The strongest parts came from the emotional reunion between families. While I enjoyed Minus One and I’ll probably watch Minus One Minus Color either today or tomorrow, I’m not dying to rewatch it because it’s a bit depressing. It lacks the fun that the Showa ones had. It works better as a film than a dumb popcorn flick but I prefer the dumb ones for monster movies like this. Like GxK in two months is right up my alley. For me, it’s F the human characters because the only things I desire to see in kaiju movies like this are titans cracking skulls. They’re like MCU with mostly alpha males and their CGI WWE wrestling. Minus One makes a great double feature with Oppenheimer. We get to see the Japanese POV after the atomic bombs dropped on them. I received my Art Spirits Hyper Solid Series Kong three days ago and it’s frickin’ awesome! It’s a 10/10 figure next to my Hiya GvK Exquisite Basic G21 and Art Spirits G89. All three have great articulation. Now I just need is the SHMA Kou Kyou Kyoku G89 that lights up and makes sounds but is quite expensive at $300+. This is my first Kong figure and it’s very movie accurate. I decided NOT to put it on the base or put his axe. My Godzillas don’t have a base and it looks awkward if only Kong has it. I want G21 and K21 to stand near each other but the base and axe creates separation. Without the base, the scale is fairly accurate. G21 is about 60 feet taller than K21 and my K21 figure is about a half inch shorter without the base. These two figures are so perfect next to each other! I was more into Kong movies as a kid since they were sadder and were in English. While I was more fascinated with Godzilla toys, his iconic roar, his mystique, and his designs. It’s like Nintendo and Sega to me. They raised me, so I love them both along with Sony. I want to honor them all. I’m the type who wears a Dreamcast and PlayStation logo hat on different days. I can’t wait to see Godzilla and Kong team up in two months and kick some Shimo and Skar King ass! Kong is like Toad in the Super Mario games. We call him Kong but his species are also called Kongs. I believe GxK is when Kong finally becomes King Kong after he defeats Skar *King.* Godzilla rules the Earth while Kong rules Hollow Earth. Godzilla x Kong is a new buddy cop movie for kaiju fans. Neither legendary titans are trying to hurt people as older Lee Shaw said in Monarch. Godzilla is only trying to police the titans from entering Earth. He’s like the MIB or TVA hunting for aliens or time variants. While Hollow Earth feels like Stranger Things’ The Upside Down and the Axis Mundi is like the Quantum Realm and the TVA where time passes differently. It’s quite a trip to watch Keiko Randa reunite with her son while she’s closer to the same age as her grandchildren while her son is already twice her age! Man, I need to rewatch Kong: Skull Island again. I don’t recall ever finishing it. I only connected John Goodman is older Bill Randa towards the end of Monarch. And I wasn’t initially a fan of either MV designs from Godzilla or Kong but their 2021 versions became my favorites for them both. Godzilla did kick more ass in KOTM while GvK felt more like a Kong movie because Kong is the closest to being human so he can convey emotions. While I believe Minus One is the superior Godzilla film, I still prefer MonsterVerse Godzilla as a creature. He’s not really a baddie. He’s only trying to protect the Earth and bring balance. And I now prefer 2021 Kong over 1933, 1962, 1976, 1986, and 2005. He’s the most compassionate Kong we’ve ever seen. He didn’t need to save Godzilla but he did anyway after G spared his life. How Godzilla x Kong plays out is Kong will lose to Skar King. Gain that glove. Call Godzilla for help. Godzilla will do it to return the favor for saving his life from Mechagodzilla. Then they’ll both beat the living shit out of Shimo and Skar King. Godzilla will remain King of the Monsters on Earth. Dream come true to finally own a great Godzilla figure next to a 2021 Kong one who is my favorite Kong. 2019/2021 MonsterVerse Godzilla is the GOAT. Would stomp on Minus One. How I envision Godzilla now is either 1989/1991 or 2019/2021. The 1989/1991 is the definitive Japanese Godzilla design to me while 2019/2021 with the bigger dorsal plates over the 2014’s is the definitive American Godzilla design.

It makes me sick how some people, like him, can claim to be a fan, but don't know anything about the character or acknowledge that we, the fans, are now in a new Golden Age of Godzilla! Getting content from both Toho & Legendary means that the G-Fans win! At the end of the day I would much rather get more Godzilla content instead of the crap Disney has spewed out with both MARVEL & Star Wars in recent years!

⁠I think the 22-year-old kid made a few decent points. Let’s be real, MV have very forgettable characters. It didn’t nail the human emotions right until we got to the last episode of Monarch. But where Skipper is wrong is he doesn’t understand that Godzilla can be a lot of things to different people. It doesn’t always needs to be an allegory for the atomic bomb or anything deeper than that. It can be WWE meets MCU like we’ll see in GxK. Turn the brains off and have fun.
