I love how the game was supposed to be a Money Generating Machine, the devs got too carried away with the survival aspect, then turning it into one of the most unique survival game
@@aeolian951 There is Only Free Lootbox, you can Grab Skin you like at Store and pay what you want. Its come from a box tough like if you buy Electronic a phone for example it come with its box, There is DLC Character too but "You Need to work for it" or else buy it. But then you start with 13 Character to master and Most of DLC character its a Noob Trap that Need Knowledge of Base Character to Survive
@@irpanfauzi1160 Wait, "You Need to work for it"? I never heard of that these characters can be obtained In any other way except for buying. Edit: Yep, seems that you're right. Never mind then.
@@aeolian951 you can craft them with spool The game even tell you that when you click on them... Spool can be obtained by unravel extra skin you have or by exchanging Klei point (a free point the dev give out in every update) on the Klei rewards page all of those currency are free and can't be bought using real money directly (well you can buy the skin with your real money and unravel them but it is unnecessary and put you in the lost :v )
Man, I dread the dark timeline where this game stayed a free to play, standard monetized mobile game grop. Thankfully, they realized that they had something good going on, and now comes the present, where it's one of the best indie survival games out there. This game will always hold a special place in my heart.
Thanks Faizal! I fell in love with the game while making this video. It's definitely not a game for everyone I would say, but its charm and sense of discovery really hooked me.
Picked up the limited time Nintendo Switch demo. I’m hooked! I get further each time. This time I got an alchemy station and got pecked to death by a bird on stilts. I killed one and stole its egg (but not without some battle scars). I later died challenging another. The damage radius catches me off guard, it’s like I’m standing a bit to the side of the bird and she still gets me by pecking downward. Nothing I won’t be able to figure out though, I’m decent at baiting hounds to bite thin air.
I hope Wilson finished cooking that fish. I have nostalgia for Don't Starve, so thank you for covering it. I spent a lot of time playing it after school!
My pleasure, I enjoyed covering it! I considered adding an animation were the fish would slowly cook and Wilson would be able to add it to this inventory, but the video was already taking too long to make :P
@@wosandakeweenjayaweera10-h48 coincidentally, I was thinking about playing it again, but my to-be-played list is already huge. Don't Starve does have me interested in the upcoming game Wizard With A Gun, which reminds me a lot of DS
I love this game's journey, we can really see the developers falling more and more in love with the game and the community. I also love that they adapted the kind of game to fit the playstyle better. It would feel so frustrating and unfair to die and lose a save that you spent a lot of real life money on. That would definitely make me anxious about adventuring and I wouldn't take as many risks as I do now and that kind of defeats the purpose of the game. Even tho the game is definitely past it's peak, it's still thriving and people still have fun playing it so for me this is one of those games that are timeless like minecraft, mario and sonic. It's crazy like it all started as a free to play money grab and ended up like this
I'm solo indie dev, working in my free time, and I just want to say that Klei's example with their games is THE Beacon for me. I work alone for now and it's only the beginning, but I hope that will change in future :)
The illustration and whole asthetic of design is one of my biggest part of reason why I keep playing this game. I love the vintage retro aesthetic and it's so hard to survive!
i love the trailers that are chock full of lore and character interactions its just so interesting and them updating the game frequently so that there is new content every so often defs adds to the experience
as someone who writes stories occasionally, "sets out to make this about something but actually you hate that thing, it turns out, and your B plot you did as a joke or secondary objective is way cooler and ends up getting all the love and becoming the entire thing" is hugely relatable lol.
AH! Don’t Starve, my #1 favorite game! I remember seeing the early trailers and just falling in love with its art style and animation. Just the idea of surviving in a world based around that Tim Burton film art style was enough to keep me hooked. It also holds a very special place in my heart as it introduced itself as the “first” proper game in saying “This is what games are like!” which led me to see so many more great things! ( or maybe it was just the first game where I actually knew what the hell I was doing ). Crazy to see that it could have been just a “cash cow/micro transactions filled” game. Wouldn’t be playing it still if that were the case! :)
Microtransaction its in game though The skin System at DST but well its because Steam Market its bad, People Sell ridiculous Price for skin there like 100$ Wendy Helloween Head
I suppose that’s true, but at least it’s just a cosmetic systems that doesn’t effect gameplay in a fundamental way. At least it isn’t like “Oh, pay $5 to gain a +15% increase in all foods you eat!” You aren’t paying for an advantage or to make things easier. You’re just paying to make yourself look cooler which is always up to you. You don’t have to pay, you could always just craft said clothes with spools or come across it randomly.
It is a really hard game. You will fail a lot. However, with each play you learn a little more about how to survive longer. The best part was discovering what things look like at night vs daylight
@@Bulbazorio btw I recommend you get Dont starve Together, not don’t starve, since don’t starve together can be played both solo and multiplayer, and also gets updated more often (the original game doesn’t get updated much anymore)
I remember playing the game and it took me 4 hours to finally get a system in place to consistently survive the night And then I learned about what happens if your sanity drops too low…
8:35 this is what I thought at first when I died. I took a break, and came back to it with my friend, survived a bit longer, died, then repeat. Then we started going down the rabbit hole of mods. DST is an amazing game
'create a town full of fun pig people and go into the wild to gather materials for them' "I need to pick 20 flowers or else the shadow demons will come for me."
Hey, thanks for making a Don't Starve video! I'm a big fan ever since the Chrome version and I didn't even know of some of this stuff! Really great and thorough video as always. And congrats for getting sponsorships, you put so much effort and dedication into your videos that you definitely deserve it! Here's looking forward to the next one!
This continues to be one of the best games with tons of updates and the devs still take suggestions from players on the forums and implement them! Thanks for the amazing video!

This game has come so far. I’ve been following it since 2012. I remember how ardently some of the developers like Kevin promised that multiplayer would never be added to Don’t Starve, look af it now. 9 years later it’s one of the best single and multiplayer survival roguelikes. Both versions of the game, the communities behind them and the cinematic and ARG linked lore are all amazing
I remember when I first started playing don't starve, I wanted a multiplayer, and then when it came out i was telling everybody and gave my extra copy to a friend so they could play with me. now that is the only game I play is don't starve together. I've been playing since 2014, this game is awesome and one of my favorites. Its amazing how far they came. (Tim Burton is also one of my favorite movie directors, and love his artwork.)
I cant believe, that for once in my life i've been here for the entire journey of a game, from start to present. I started playing the game when it came out on steam, and it feels weird to be part of the community that was begging them for mutliplayer, and we were turned down, and then the excitement when they announced that they changed their minds about it And i have been there for it, so it feels weird that now its 'part of history'
My niece was watching Markiplier playing this one day and I had to have it, been a don't starve fan since owning all versions, had/have it for PS3, pc, mobile and have probably played over 1000 hours over all platforms. Now I'm hooked on dst and it just gets better. Best devs in the game along with the terraria devs. Can't wait for the crossover.
I play this game and felt the uncertainty and meaninglessness of life in a small time. This game teaches me that, even after all those negative aspects, you must stand again and try to build your empire. You can't possibly do all the adventures in life and still survive. Despite that you must look after them to enjoy a small time you are spending on this planet. In game you can cheat though, but even after that game wins again... I defeated Maxwell once and when I got tied to that chair and reborn as Maxwell... it.. the feeling was different. I achieved everything and still I was in the same pit. No other game gives you this sense. No winning is final no defeat is fatal. (Unless you die ofcourse.)
12:46 But there's a divining rod the description of which is something like "There has got to be a way to get out of here, right?", and a lot of players would probably just see the crafting recipes to see what it is and find the rod
Good for Klei! There's something to be said there too about blindly following your own vision and ignoring your player bases' requests and ideas, I remember back in the day when I was obsessed with the game, we were practically begging Klei to add a multi-player mode, they strongly declined, and practically promised it would NEVER happen because that's against their own vision of the game, they wanted it to be a single-player experience or something like that, they even put up a page on their own website disclosing this information and told us to just stop trying, which was a bummer at the time to say the least.. because after all we knew what we wanted and what we would think would be fun. Look at em now, can't say I'm much surprised, I knew it would be a hit if it went multi-player haha, everyone did! except for Klei at the time I guess. They sure learned a lot, and I hope other companies take note, here's to their health!
Crazy looking back at both Minecraft and Don't Starve, i was early to both, VEEEEERY early to Minecraft. It was $10 when notch first brought up his site. Game was largely unknown but i had a super nerdy friend into indies, and game development and he bought me a copy, we played lan, problably 2 of the first people to do so and i knew it was going to be massive. Wish i would have started a youtube channel around it and later Don't Starve. Could have had millions of subs lol.
I know it sounds like we’re trying to force you to get the game, but Dont Starve TOGETHER (if you actually try to get it, make sure it has Together) is a really good experience. It is CONSISTENTLY being updated about every single month and the characters, bosses, environments, “pets”, and enemies are extremely well designed.
woah, just in time with the Terraria X Dont Starve leak! Great vid as always, Glen! This game always seemed interesting for me, and I was suprised to see your notif that it was about Don't Starve! Edit: dang, copyright claims suck
Thanks Caleb, glad you liked it! I fell in love with the game while making this video, but it's definitely not a game for everyone. The copyright claim really sucks, killed all the momentum and now this new version is performing the worst of all my videos because of it.
@@ThatGuyGlen Damn, atleast it wasn't falsely claimed instead, but still. The game is very punishing, I remember surviving until the 13th and then dogs coming up and chomping everything up :(
I just discovered thiß channel and this is so good! It's clear that you have made some research and it's easy to understand you! And of course, the editing skills are just *chef's kiss*. The way you edit depending on which game you're talking about is a detail I really appreciate!
Thank you very much, glad you enjoy the videos! I'm always happy to hear when people appreciate the editing, since the majority of the work goes into that part of the process :D
In a way, Don't Starve kind of represents the growth of Klei Entertainment as a company, with them being fairly inexperienced at the beginning, but gaining a lot of knowledge by today.
The pig village game sounds fun but I am glad we got an awesome survival game instead. Nice that the company changed as well for employees to not be rushed.
Dont starve still is the only early access survibsl game that finished 100% And it is one of THE picture book examples of how to do early access right! Klei's awesome.
Im so glad Klei went away ftom the free to play designe. While a little of it came back in dont starve together in the form of skins, they never held game mechanics gated by money. They even made proper expansions, not just dozendss of 5$ dlcs. And that design phosophy continued into their future games! And now, Klei is my favourite game studio :D
I had to make a project about rebels in real life for school, and I chose Klei as my rebel because of this. I am letting you know that I used your video as one of my sources for the project. Thank you for making this video. It helped me so much.
7:35 perma-death + discover + learn = is such a realistic survival mechanics. If plus the "No tutorial" it's more exciting I've never watched tutorials of any kind for this game so I could experience the real survival life Best game nonetheless, but like any games, it lacks alot of stuff to be added. I just wish there was a new mechanics where tools and weapons are made to the players extent and Custom, so the varieties and potentials endless discovering could come true! (Just like real life)
Grea video. i think one thing I would like to see more of is what you put in the title. For this instantce, I think covering the argument in greater detail would be cool because thats part of the title. Obviously sources for this would be hard to find so its understandable if it doesnt happen
@@yessir942 i mean it's not cheating because its not a mod it's an option i mean imagine building your farm for hours and hours and hours then red hound come out of nowhere on the worst timing possible (btw they always do come on the worst timing possible at least for me) then are you going to restart again and again and again ? i mean rollbacks are really cool if feel like it's time travelling and all video games have a restart option and the rollbacks are a restart option (i killed all bosses solo as wendy and of course couldn't do it without 'em) i remember crying as a kid after being killed while forgetting to pause on the original ds so yeah sorry for talking too much and responding at 5Am lol
@@monkeygameplay5455 you good, its 10 at night for me lol, and yeah i understand that, i used to be the same way, but after playing for years i've learnt to be prepared for the worst personally, im also just VERY stubborn like that, for example, i tortured myself to beat every boss SOLO on dark souls 3, it was hell but i did it, im just weird like that idk lol I'll typically rollback during singleplayer though, since in DST, everything is harder for a solo player
My brother got me on the solo mobile version of the game, we got laptops and we have over 200 hours playing together and I only got it due to the free copy, this game is integrated into my early life and I love how much they keep updating it
I think the communities continuous pressure on Klei to consider a multiplayer version of the original DS should also be taken into consideration when viewing the multiplayers origins.
its crazy to hear this game started off on the chrome store, bcuz thats actually how i discovered it. and indeed, i played this game w my friends for many years to come! it had the most hours in my library for a very long time lol. epic video man
9:27 When I was first shown this game on a mobile phone, I said it looked a whole lot like Tim Burton style. This video is actually the first thing, that I've seen since that mobile app (around 6-7 yrs ago), to confirm that thought. I'm happy 😊
Such an wonderfully crafted game. I went into it blind years ago. It was a love/hate with the figure it out brutality of it all. The art style and theme of it also very appealing to me. I dont think Ive managed to survive longer than 25 days, but I keep coming back to this one.
Thanks for reviving some of my good memories with this video 👍 I'm not a fan of survival games but I love this game , and I think it's because of the sense of curiosity , it's interesting design and the horror elements and overall how mysterious the game looks made me replay the game as much as I can so that I would understand the lore and the story more considering how little we are told about what's happening
Ran across DS on a web browser back in 2011 and said, this game is going to be huge. I shared it and my friends and co-workers hated it, didn't wanna play. Now ALL of them play and I say...see...toldja so. I know games and fashion.
The most important thing I learned here is that if a game feels like a hollow cash-grab, it's probably because that's literally what it was intended to be. I'm very happy that DS ended up being too good for that.
Your videos on Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley and Dont Starve are some of my favourite, really interesting! I'd like to some day see you cover Oxygyn Not Included (also by Klei) or Cuphead, like people have been suggesting in other comments :)
don't starve is actually my childhood game. i played the beta when i was 11, and i fell in love. the style, gameplay, and story got me playing a lot. these days tho, i'm overwhelmed by the new things and characters that they added, so i'm learning again lol
I love Don't Starve. The whole game, the art style, the progression, everything around it just oozes of character. So I always held Klei Entertainment in high regard. Your video is great. The story went pretty much as I expected from what I know from the game, but I still very much liked to hear it. Cheers!
I like the game's art style, lore, sound design and characters. Too bad I can't play it without pausing it every 2 minutes to try to remember what I'm doing.
I like how they have a free copy of don’t starve together, so you could play whit a friend who didn’t want or could get the actual game, and not just wait alone until someone joined
(Rip the original upload lemme repost my original comment too lol) It's really interesting seeing what the project started out as compared to the final product
Ah, I remember I used to play Don't Starve as a kid. Though I do want to say, I was able to survive for an impressive amount of time for an 8 year old.
