For the Belgian racquet company Donnay, brand image was everything - one that they established by equipping the biggest stars of the sport’s golden age. Once the world’s largest manufacturer of tennis racquets, the abrupt exit of their former poster boy sponsor, Swedish star Bjorn Borg, led to their eventual bankruptcy and what seemed an almost certain demise.
By the late 80's however, Donnay's costly acquisition of rising superstar Andre Agassi seemed a surefire way to revitalize the brand... instead, the gamble proved to be one of tennis history's greatest misfires.

I managed to get sponsorship with Donnay in the early 90s. One of favourite memories is going to pick up my orange & grey Pro Ones, shoes, shirts, shorts & bag from the local Sports Shop where they'd been delivered to. Wasn't until years later when i finally was able to get my favourite, the yellow & blue Pro One. Both now hang proudly on my wall at home, along with my Ultimate Pro, Academy Pro, Ghost, Formula Pro, Cynetic . . . . As another poster has said, paintjobs are now commonplace in the pro game. You now have a new subscriber!

It is somehow historically fitting that Agassi and his 1993 Radical Tour 690 “Bumblebee” brought the legacy of Howard Head full circle back to HEAD. Howard Head (HH) himself never designed a single modern graphite tennis racquet released from the company that bears his name to this day. HH’s only design contribution to HEAD’s tennis racquet history was the Ashe Competition series which used aluminium-fibreglass sandwich construction similar to their skis. HH’s contribution to modern all graphite tennis racquet design was via Prince, which made the Original Graphite OS that was the racquet used by Agassi in his crucial formative years. Donnay copied the Prince OG OS for Agassi. When HEAD signed Agassi after his Wimbledon 1992 win, they were looking for an exciting fresh face to endorse a new racquet line. The 1993 Radical Tour 690 Bumblebee which they developed for Agassi was based on his then Donnay racquet, effectively bringing home HH’s design DNA back to the company he founded. What an amazing legacy Howard Head has in tennis and skiing, all because he loved both sports but wasn’t particularly good at either!

Good story to cover and well told. Many good lessons in here. It also makes me think that Wilson and Head got somewhat lucky with who they chose to sponsor. Who was to say that Fed wouldn't have been the wildcard that Agassi was? You don't go into such investments thinking that...but you take the risk and sometimes it doesn't pay off. I think the history of some racquet company success is largely defined by who the face of these brands are. Clearly, that is a factor, as told by this Donnay story.

Greg Rusedski was the only Top 20 player left using a Donnay midsize racquet in the late 1990s / early 2000s. Shall we take it that was a paintjob of another brand? Or was he actually using a real Donnay?

Shitty title. It had little to do with Agassi. They just missed the boat on the transition from wood to other materials, plus Borg retiring. Very common that big companies fail in a transition, just look at BlackBerry and Nokia with the smartphone.. the typical pattern is that big company is #1 with the current technology and have no real interest or belief to develop the new technology. New technology takes over the market and existing giant does make product for the new but still does mostly the old believing that they will exist side to side. Their implementation of the new technology is inferior to competitors, not what brand is known for, less marketing etc. and they quickly go under trying to cling on to the old tech.

Now paint jobs are the norm for endorsed racquets, it’s crazy Donnay actually tried to make Agassi use their actual racquet. This would be unheard of today.

Actually, players use racquets from brand but are often old models from sponsor made up like sponsors newest model as pro players they do not want to switch from what they like in models. I am same way and why I am tracking down on e-Bay models of cheap Aluminum ProKennex Jr Ace Pro Power Contour in red and blue nearly stock only forced change of adding a very thin grip over top failing stock grip using black cloth athletic/hockey tape in a wide spiral going over top old with some Loctite Ultra Gel Control (waterproof) on lower going on bottom cup end as tape is open. I am a smaller player at 5 foot 2 inch/157.5 cm with current, weight of 107--110 pounds/48--49 kilograms and so I would be using a 25 inch, maybe 26 inch even if I was not using this specific racquet, I would be using a Jr size 25 inch anyhow and a 4 & 1/4 and a single layer of same tape job as above or a 4 in grip and going when new 2 layers of same tape job as above on over top stock grip with possibly a thin layer of same glue as above on first layer of tape so I can have a stiff grip. In 2023 I bought 2 more of said model/color of racquet and in 2024 just recently ordered another racquet so I will have 4 including original where on original I got around 2002--2003, in 2020 I used a very light mat spray-paint clearcoat as original paint was peeling off.

Its funny that Prince basically did the exact opposite and tanked as well, still make great rackets and sponsor no one. Also the Pure Drive mold was purchased off Pro Kennex (Destiny) which is probably the all time tennis business mover ever.
@caseysmith544

Yes, what Prince did is true, but average people still use Prince given how prices on Prince racquets in price are more competitive then most other brands who keep jacking up prices.

4:10 Graphite racquets were not the norm in 1980. Few models were available and fewer pro players still used them. Granted, the market turned to graphite extremely quickly after 1980 which was maybe too quick for Donnay since they were an actual manufacturer and not some marketing based sports conglomerate like Wilson and Adidas. Donnay actually made a bewildering array of graphite racquets in the early 80's which were on par with anything else. If they failed to maintain sales, it's not due to sticking to the old ways. They had the racquets.
@CHillTennisEntertainment
@CHillTennisEntertainment 3 месяца назад
It wasn't until 2009 that Andre claimed that the Donnay racquet had negatively impacted his 1989 season. I seriously doubt that his results from that year caused any slow-downs in Donnay racquet sales. And even if they did. Andre more than made up for it in 1990, by reaching two grand slam finals and winning the Year End Championships.

Disagree with the maker of this video. Donnay was making great racquets in the 80s but only promoting the oversized model. The Pro Cynetic 1 was a great racquet and 85 sq inches head. It was just never promoted well... most good players did not want to play with oversized models... That's what killed the company...
@enematwatson1357
@enematwatson1357 3 месяца назад
Funny how I don't even remember Donnay producing any Oversize racquets. They just weren't on my radar I guess. I do remember the Pro Cynetic (I bought one in 86 probably) which was a superb graphite Kevlar double braid construction like the Pro Staff and was played by Guy Forget and Johan Kriek. Fine players but not the kind that will sell tons of racquets. Rumor has it that Pete Sampras played with the Pro Cynetic for a while but when the big time contracts came for Pete, he was adamant that he wanted a US brand so went with Wilson. Pete could probably have put Donnay back on track. At any rate, Donnay's graphite frames were second to none but that's just not what sells tennis racquets.
@FLAC2023
@FLAC2023 3 месяца назад
@@enematwatson1357 Pro Cynetic 1 was indeed a great racquet and very easy to customize which the PS85 wasn't. It also came in different flexes. I bought it because it was $25 cheaper than the PS85 and loved it. Never had a PS85 until years later and the PC1 was already discontinued...

2:45 Slight statistical error here. You’re forgetting Borg had a contract with Bancroft to use their rackets in North America from 1975-1979. The 17 tournaments he won in that region would have been won without using a Donnay branded racket, so the actual total is not 62 titles but 45. Otherwise good video.
