How drone technology is helping plant 100 million mangrove trees in the UAE by 2030

In Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, an ambitious project to plant and restore coastal mangroves is underway. The Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative (ADMI) is part of a nationwide effort to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030 across the UAE. In 2023 alone, it distributed over six million seeds using specially adapted drones. Each drone carries up to 6000 Avicennia marina seeds with a delivery system that shoots them downwards, ensuring they get stuck into tidal mud, allowing them to successfully propagate. The drones follow a nature-based pattern to give the seedlings the best opportunity to grow. “Everything is autonomous,” says Cory Rhodes at Distant Imagery, the company that designs and operates the drones on behalf of the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency. “It's all planted only in the areas with the highest probability of growth," he says. "We don't plant in straight lines, we don't plant in any of the pools or any of the channels and the system takes into account trees that are already there to shut the system off and on. By the time it's done, it's like as natural a forest as we can create.”
A team of scientists support the project by identifying the best location for protection and restoration, assessing soil conditions, water quality, circulation and tidal inundation levels at each prospective site, and then monitoring them over subsequent years. “Our key priority first and foremost is to protect what naturally exists and then enhance it with a bit of science-based restoration effort,” says Nessrine Alzahlawi at the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency, who is a lead scientist on the project. “We're not trying to create new habitats, replace existing natural habitats or have large-scale reforestation areas," she says. "What we're trying to do is restore or enhance natural ecosystems in a science-based manner.”
The hope is that learning from the ADMI project will have applications in other mangrove-growing regions. “Mangroves are real climate superheroes,” says Andrew Terry, director of conservation and policy at the Zoological Society of London, a project partner. “There are about 147,000 square kilometres of mangroves left in the world, but they have been under heavy historical pressure," he says. "We really wanted to work with colleagues in the UAE to get that knowledge and support out to the ground level in the most biodiversity rich places of the world.”

Climate discussion aside; it's fantastic that mangroves are being planted throughout it's natural locations. It's extremely important as habitat, it limits land erosion, it cleans the water and it lowers the local temperatures by giving shade. Good luck with the project!

Great project. It isn't easy to walk on mangrove flats even if you aren't being careful about the ecosystem. I'm glad to see Abu Dhabi building forests instead of resorts. I hope they can involve as many locals in the project as possible.

The higher the seeds are dropped from, the deeper they will sink into the sand, up to the terminal velocity of a falling seed. Maybe drop from say 200-300meters up. Great system, love the wooded CNC cut type drone.

In cities we need to create super blocks, grids of green corridors where we can remove the concrete, replace it with sand and plant shade trees. 🫴 Many downtown areas are hot because of unnecessary parking that doesn’t allow locals to walk their own neighborhoods.

The data collection and interpretation to select the best place to stick the seed in the mud is far more important than the drone. Yet it is the headline of the video to get viewers. Keep up the real science.

High risk high reward project. Sounds like the best possible team and strategy. Low hanging fruit is more suitable for most places yet it is awesome that thit team is already answering questions that might arise when these kinds of projects are chosen later

I want to celebrate this but as someone who works in mangroves and reforestation here in Central America, I have questions. The video shows vast mud flats, mud flats occur naturally in many mangrove systems where salinity is periodically so high that not even the most salt-tolerant species can grow. Are we to understand that the seeding is happening across these mud flats? If so, how did such large areas lose their forest cover to begin with? It's essential to identify the cause of forest loss and correct it before reforesting, of course. It'd be so much more valuable a video to explain in more detail how the area became degraded, specifically addressing the vast open areas and distinguishing between naturally occurring mud flats and the degraded areas available for reforesting. The one short segment of a researcher claiming to find a suitable spot for seeding shows her pointing out exactly one seedling tree with a few leaves, tight on the edge of an existing stand of shrubby trees, and using that hint of natural regeneration to indicate a good target area for the drone. Sigh, it's not very clear though, how much of the area behind and around the researcher is really suitable. Cool technology that lets the folks talk about huge numbers of seeds delivered, but my own work shows just how tiny a step is the dropping of a seed compared to the work required to ensure baby trees grow and thrive. HOWEVER: every site and every method is somewhat unique, and the questions I raise here should NOT be taken to mean I predict failure! I would just have appreciated more details.

Abu Dhabi have carried out massive expansion to the city & intrusive construction works on original, previously untouched coastline, islands & inlets which surprise surprise...took out alot of original mangrove habitat... There's alot of PR spin in this feature which fails to mention what's been happening over the past 20 years in Abu Dhabi.

Like all human interventions, care needs to be taken. Mangroves in the New Zealand climate and ecosystem are controversial. While some see them as creating diverse and fertile ecosystems, in reality in New Zealand, mangroves create a mono species environment which is devoid of life and holding place for anaerobic mud. They aren’t the nursery for fish, instead mangroves replace these places which are the beds of sea grass. Ecosystems are complex and they need to be well understood when restoring. This looks like a really great project though and I hope it meets or exceeds expectations.
