Using the pokegear radio and tuning into the Unown signal in HG/SS makes the forms of Unown you don't have appear more often

I got all the unown in Platinum. Sadly, I was 11-12, and not so crude back then, so I didn't think to use the capsule seals to swear at my opponents.

Update for anyone curious: As of 2022, Legends Arceus is by far the easiest and most interesting way to go about getting all of the unown. They all appear as static encounters hidden around the map and you have to figure out their locations through your Pokedex. No need to battle or go through a million encounters for one specific letter!

My favorite reward for catching all the unown in Diamond and Pearl was if you transferred them into Pokémon Ranch, there would be a chance for a cut scene every 15 minutes where the unown would lay around like a keyboard and then sound off from a through z. I thought it was really cool when it happened.

Actually the easiest game to shiny hunt them in was gold/silver, because there were only 2 unown that could be shiny: I & V.

I did this as a kid to make my Silver game last longer, I'd pretty much maxed it out and I was desperate to have new things to do. I don't remember it taking very long though!

I remember in G/S collecting them all since the playground rumor was "Collect every Unown letter, then play that weird radio station when in the ruins of Alph and there is a super duper ultra rare chance of a level 5 Celebi appearing in the ruins.

7:20 Why are you using the bike instead of running? Running is as fast in such a short space because bike needs to accelerate, while running is instant top speed. Not only that, recovering from running into a wall is much faster the recovering from cycling into a wall.

It's funny- I always tried to catch the whole alphabet on my first playthrough of the games they were in. When I randomly found the ! one I was actually shocked that I discovered something my friends hadn't done yet or took the time to do. Such... humble times. I miss them.

11:36 "How long would it take to get every shiny version of Unown?" I have done the Shiny Unown Dex specifically in Alpha Sapphire, with the shiny charm. It took nine months. Of more or less daily hunting. So it'd likely take years in the older generations.

I've done this challenge in Platinum and HeartGold. In HeartGold & SoulSilver if you play the Pokégear inside the Ruins of Alph, it'll play the "Mysterious Transmission" and having that playing will increase your chances of encountering a forme of Unown you haven't caught. I think this feature makes HeartGold & SoulSilver the easiest game to catch all of them. Also, in my last playthrough of HeartGold, I was trying to get all of the Unown, and I found a shiny Unown D.

That means that, excluding ivs, it is possible to get 535562 INDIVIDUAL unown in all of the Pokémon games that you can get them in.

Funny that you uploaded this video when you did. I completed my unown dex in crystal and FRLG when I was a kid and am considering trying again in a more recent title. ORAS here I come! On another note though, unown need more love! I personally am fascinated by them and wish there was some mechanic that made them a bigger deal. When I was a kid I was convinced that catching the whole alphabet in Gold/Silver would make something cool happen, boy was I disappointed after spending all that time catching useless Pokemon :/

Unown have always gave me this sense of mystery, all the way back to Gold/Silver, and Pokémon crystal. I remember catching them all and it’d always felt like there’d be more to it, like something was supposed to happen. so I’d go back to the ruins, In every version. It just felt like something was supposed to happen, like there’s some sort of secret waiting to be discovered even if there’s no information on the supposed event on the internet.

I would argue that for catching the base alphabet, Heartgold and Soulsilver are the easiest. The Ruins of Alph are available really early on, and they can all be unlocked after beating Morty, as you have both Surf and Strength. The main plus it has over Gold and Silver is that if you turn on the radio in the basement where Unown are found, and move the frequency to the very center, you hear some strange noise. This frequency drastically increases the likelihood of finding an Unown type that you haven't before. However, it also makes getting the question mark and the exclamation point much harder. They are only available after completing the first 7 pages of the Unown report, which is given to you once you finish the first slide puzzle. Part of page 7 is completing all the special rooms that were introduced in Crystal, which includes the one where you need Ho-Oh. That makes it to where you either can't get the last two forms until after badge 7 in HG, or until after you reach Pewter city in SS.

I really like the Unown. They have that classic Pokémon charm; makes me think of how Pokémon used to be in the 2000s. (Even though I never played any of the GBA/DS games.) I don't know how to describe it. It's just a type of charm that makes me smile and feel happy. Apparently, I'm nostalgic for something I never experienced.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, if you tune the Pokégear to a secret channel, you’re more likely to encounter an Unown you haven’t obtained yet.

Years ago, I tortured myself during Christmas break for some reason and I tried this in Heartgold. I tip my hat to you and your patience sir.

As someone who has also completed their Shiny Unown collection, I can safely say that it will take you several (about 4-6) months even if you are hunting them every day for at least 3-4 hours. It's not so bad until you get to about 10 unique forms left to find, and then you'll want to start only encountering the ones you don't have. Finding a unique Shiny form can easily take a total of about 4-6 hours even with a 999 dexnav level (which you'll easily reach far before getting to this point). In total, with on-and-off hunting, this took me two whole years to complete. Unless you're a die-hard Shiny hunter like me or Kangaskid18, don't even think about doing this >_

I mean, pretty sure it took me the better part of a summer back in the day. I remember playing in the ruins with my friends, and being legit spooked at night.

In Gen 2, the letter of Unown is based on its IVs. Specifically, you take the middle two bits of the Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special IVs, in that order, then convert that into a decimal number between 0 and 255. Finally, you divide that by 10 rounded down, and what you get is the Unown form, A starting at 0 all the way to Z at 25. Example: You catch an Unown with the IVs 5, 6, 7, and 8. Converting that to decimal gives you 0101, 0110, 0111, and 1000. Taking the middle two bits from each gives you 10111100, which is equal to 188. Dividing by 10 and rounding down gives you 18, so this Unown is an S This also causes some interesting things to happen with shiny Unown. In Gen 2, for a pokemon to be shiny, they must have 10 IVs in Defense, Speed, and Special, and Attack must have the 2 bit flipped to a 1, meaning attack must be 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, or 15. Following the steps for finding the letter, all of these combinations can only give us 01010101 or 11010101, which are equal to 8 or 21 respectively, meaning only I and V Unown can be shiny in Gen 2. You still have a 1/8192 of finding one, with an equal 1/16384 chance of it being I or V. Another byproduct of the way the letter is determined is that there are only 5 possible combinations for Z, while every other letter has 10, meaning Z has a ~1.96% and every other letter has a ~3.92%

This video gave me an interesting question: In which case are you most likely to catch all unknown fastest: Something like ORAS where you simply have all 28 of them equally likely at the same time, or something like G/S where you do one puzzle, then have 6 of them equal... then another puzzle, then a few more are thrown into the pool with the original 6, etc. Well I wrote a python code to simulate this. I simplified it a bit, I just tried two cases 1: Simply dice rolling all 28 until you get all of them. I ran a bunch of sims, takes about 109.5 encounters on average. 2: Dice roll half of them (14 unowns) until you have all of those. Then throw in the remaining 14 into the pool and dice roll all 28 until you find the remaining 14. This takes about 139 on average. I expected case 2 to be faster but it isn't. Well at least I got some coding practice in

I did this in Crystal just this week, actually. I laughed at the fact that I could go into the Ruins of Alph & catch A-K before I even got my first badge, so I did exactly that, and after that it wasn't difficult to come back for the rest later. But dear god you're crazy for doing it in every game. Great video!

I caught them all in Silver (Virtual Console) for my Complete living Dex (Forms, variations, patterns, colors and major gender differences included) and trade afterwards for ! and ? forms, it took me a long time because they're rare in GTS and always asked for legendaries, i didn't know you could catch them all in Omega Ruby, great video!

I did it in Crystal, it took me a few hours. Fun fact about Gen 2 Unown is that their letter in determined by their DV, and the method of calculation makes it so every letter have 10 chances out of 256 to appear (or 3.9%), except for the letter Z who have only 6 chances out of 256 to appear (or 2.3%), making it quite rare. Also, due to how shiny are detemined in gen 2 (through DV), only the letter I and V can be shiny, so don't waste your time trying to get them all ! If you're looking for a perfect 4 DV Unown, it would be a Z with a Dark Type hidden power (it doesn't meen that all Z with Dark Hidden Power are perfect though).

As someone else has already said, you can in fact use the Mysterious Transmission from PokéGear's Radio to have Unown you don't yet have appear more often in HGSS. It's really nice. Especially if you're like me and RNG abuse perfect shiny Unowns in all forms.

8:26 Technically, wrong. Gold, Silver, and Crystal let you print out notes written in Unown on the Game Boy Printer if you catch all the forms. It’s an obscure mechanic that required a peripheral that not many had, so I can see not knowing or forgetting about it.

The good thing about heartgold: you can use the radio to sintonize the strange music in unown ruins, what it does is to echance your possibility to find an unown you haven't captured yet. It makes it reaaally easy to just capture them all!

"SEND HELP" LMAO, best use of ball capsules I've ever seen. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I like Unown. They're weird and kinda creepy. Awful in battle yes, but not every Pokémon has to be strong. Some are there for character, backstory, or mystery instead.

Tip for gen 2, After finishing the ho-oh puzzle in union an dropping into the ruins use an escape rope. This will take you back to the union cave and save a bit of time getting to the final puzzle :). also thanks for the video it was very enjoyable.
