A look at what made nearly every Ed, Edd n Eddy episode full of an enduring joy. Ed, Edd n Eddy came to help define Cartoon Network one episode at a time, and still stands up today. There’s no longer running show on the network and it’s a show that has become a part of meme culture a decade later. Ed, Edd n Eddy lasted for a reason, this is how and why.

Something to mention, but another factor is the fixed cast. Not a single new character (outside of Eddy's brother in the movie) was introduced in the entire series. Ed Edd 'n Eddy was like The Three Stooges. All you need is an iconic duo or trio with personalities that bounce off each other, good chemistry and a kind of _magic_ where you can then put them into _any scenario_ and no matter what it is, they can make it funny. That was Ed, Edd n Eddy. It's also the cartooniest cartoon that ever cartooned. One of my favorite episodes, One Plus One equals Ed have the boys breaking the laws of reality of their own world. Whether it's removing Jimmy's outline or taking a bite out of the sun. The Eds truly could do ANYTHING they wanted and there's something so wonderful and hilarious about that. So carefree.

Weirdly enough, the message of the movie hit more close to home when I rewatched it recently. The fact that those you look up to, especially family, aren’t always good people. I remember being 13 and trying to deal with the fact that my dad was moving away following their divorce. He was essentially unemployed and crashing at our summer house, but I tried to play it cool and make it out like he had this great job in the other town. There were a lot of things I didn’t know at the time and I don’t blame myself for trying to be positive, but it’s one of the hardest lessons you have to learn as a kid. I don’t care what people say, this movie was mature.

The thing I always liked about Ed Edd n Eddy was how late 70s and early 80s it was in capturing what it was liking growing up in or near a random mill hill town. Yeah, the big over the top fantastical shows like Fairly Oddparents andother shows are nice. But its enjoyable to just sit down and watch something simple, something grounded and telling basic slice of life stories. Sure EEnE had some over the top moments with the contraption and set pieces they made but they were always made from things you could find around you, rubber bands, card board boxes, sxrap metal from the nearby junk yard. They werent anything made put of materials no kid could ever have access too. And when there were moments like that it was shown to just be their imaginations.

No other show hit as close to home as this one. Always loved the animation style, and so stories felt like something i was feeling at the time. I remember researching Danny Antonucci & i went so far as to do the “we’re not worthy” thing from Wayne’s World when i googled him. 29 years old now & i still remember those hot summer days stuck at home watching Ed Edd n Eddy marathons. I lived so far from my school & didnt have a lot of friends to begin with, so getting to grow up with the kids in the cul-de-sac always gave me a good laugh & warmed my heart.

South Park actually was digital, or at least it has been after the first episode. Anyways, I've always felt that one of the strengths of Ed Edd n Eddy was that it didnt shy away from the idea that people, and especially kids, are unfair. Things didn't always work out the way the characters wanted, and it wasn't uncommon for the kids to be outright dickish to each other. This worked, though, because the kids themselves weren't always the best people, so you never felt too bad for them when things went south, yet they were still relatable enough that you could get invested in their stories. Basically, you were often going "Haha, yeah, people are like that sometimes" or "Haha, yeah, I've been there" more than anything. I always liked that this show wasn't afraid to show unfair and dickish behavior from the main cast, I think it made them more real.....well, in a sense, anyway. They are still exaggerated cartoons, after all.

If my memory serves me correctly, in most of the episodes the trio see themselves in the middle of a situation without even knowing how they'd gotten there in the first place, and that, for me, is the beauty of this show. It totally relates to the way suburban kids played outdoors. Having been one of those, I remember that we would be doing somthing and, minutes later, we would be in a totally different situation or game without even realizing how that had happened.

As a kid, I took Ed, Edd n' Eddy for granted. It was almost always airing a new episode, or rerunning some phenomenal ones. A lot of shows back then didn't last an entire year, let alone several. There were so many episodes that were just so memorable, like Rolf's fish duel, or the Eds cutting up carpet and gluing it to their armpits to try and look grown up. Or the time machine, or the episode where they tried to make Jimmy into a sumo wrestler. Or the episode where Ed apparently saw Alien and acted like a xenomorph, hunting down the other kids and trapping them in his room with weird cereal stuff. Or when the rock got stuck in Ed's shoe, so he ate an entire slide. God, this show was absurd, but it was just so fun. Anybody remember the PS2 game the Eds had? I remember playing the part where Ed went all Godzilla over and over again, or the sci-fi Lost-In-Space part that took place in the junkyard. I get some real nostalgia remembering that game.

I think the best things about the show is the fact that it immortalizes the childhoods of middle class kids that grew up in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. It was revolutionary at the time because most shows portrayed unrealistic childhoods that only kids with rich parents could ever have, while this portrayed everyday life for normal kids. Now we can look back and see a show that illustrates our childhood instead of just having the memories. In a way, these characters were our childhood friends that never grew up.

Ironically enough I actually had to grow up a bit to get this show. When I was younger the voices and designs of the characters didn't come across to me as young as they were meant to be, probably largely because I just never watched it enough to learn anything past the surface. I didn't realize until I was a young adult that they were meant to be children with overactive imaginations, not incredibly stupid teenagers, and I have a new appreciation for the show now
