This clip comes from episode three of "No Man's Friend," wherein Nigerian rapper eLDee explains the collapse of the music industry post-colonization, how the rise of hip hop laid the blueprints for his ambitions, and how he integrated rap with traditional sounds to pioneer a genre.

eLDeee played a huge role and impact in the early Nigeria Hip Hop culture. Released successful albums That were hits and turned out to be classics till date e.g Champion, Birthday, I’m leaving and the Ever classic Big Boy. I was very young and he influenced me a lot . The Trybe men era was Epic. Hopefully he makes a new record soon for the Culture.

Great interview, lovely questions and manner of asking and listening by the host. And ofcourse, great time listening to eLDee Da Don. Trybesmen gave us the hits in terms of raps back in the days. Thanks LD and God Bless.

Eldeeee or Sir elDeeeee is speaking fucking truth here, holds no bar. My little contibution here is the supportive system that propagate eldee vision was the Liberalization policy of the Military Govt on Television and radio, as we move sway from Monopolistic NTA ( television) and Radio Nigeria. The entrance of the private Tv and radio company redirect the narratives ( 95,96,97) with new broadcaster moving from the old system to modernization era of the time ( old gen zee phenomenon). That system was the infra and supra structure that support and propel eldee dreams. I remember so young and listening to stuff on radio in 96/97/98 from Trybesmen crew, it looks so different, new sounds , captivating and meeting the expectations of the teenagers at that point in time.

Great analysis. They influenced even POSH Teens and youths as we had Dr.Sid in University Of Ibadan who was studying Dentistry and was also a part of a Dance Squad that was making money performing on Ui campus too. They were also touring campuses with Plantashun Boiz at a point.

Eldee is wrong on the 80s record labels. We had sony still in the 80s and EMI. Also local Tabansi records that signed Majek Fashek in the 80s. It was later in the mid 90s that they were dying and not the 80s. All these artists like Alex Zito, Blackky, Alex O, Daniel Wilson were late 80s and early 90s

He was trying to say MAJORITY were not getting signed on MAJOR records to promote their songs internationally. 😊

All the people you just mentioned, how many of them were internationally known or doing international gigs aside them fela, king sunny and the likes? Eldee is saying the fact here.

@whalley723 Majek was big and playing internationally. Onyeka was playing abroad. Femi Kuti was playing abroad

@bface1873 you are right with Madam Onyeka, Majek etc but a lot of artiste still didn't have international leverage compared with those who had.
