Thank you for this history as a black man who loved finding out about my past black history, I never heard of this before and I'm finding out there are many evil things that has happened to black people, not just in America but around the world that are so evil that I may have not even known about.
Thank you for these invaluable testimonies and documents. We need so much more like these, and mainstream media either disappear or be more to be like you!! I'm personally white and live on the other side of the pond in Belgium, Europe. But it is true that the soldiers of the "US empire" are mainly coming from the poorest US communities. The Army is a way for them to make a living while, they're said, protecting "the free world" (how many really believe it?!). I think that those who combated in WW2 (and until Vietnam ?) had access to a free higher education paid by the US state as a reward for their service. I was not born yet during WW2, but I had an aunt who was a nurse and was taking care of US soldiers on the front during the Battle of the Bulge, in the Belgian Ardennes. Her family did not know if she was still alive until she came back to their home along with the US liberators. All of them in the jeep which brought her home were African American soldiers. You never see such a scene with black US soldiers in the Hollywood movies lauding the US liberators in your theater of choice, ever since 1945 up until now. Another story from that time is that of the father of a friend (also a white man) who lived near the German border and was forced, at the end of the war, even if he was still a teenager, to enlist in the Nazi troops. He kept a trauma all his life and a deep hatred against black people because he was arrested (in Nazi uniform), put in a prison camp and humiliated by US African American liberators, who were told (like every allied soldier of course) about the way Nazis hated and treated (killed) black people. Sad story from a world that is often much more complicated than the binary scripts of Hollywood or any pro-war propaganda of course. But I think the African American soldiers, who were often deployed on the front line, were the first to be sent back to the US when it was clear the war with Germany was at an end, ... so the US people and the world at large did not associate the idea of a "free America", a "free world", with the image of African Americans among the "US Liberators" of Western Europe in 1944/45. What a putrid shame US racism is !! What morally corrupt white supremacists are!! And how I hate Bolsonaro and all that he represents!! I hope Brazilians will soon be liberated from that horrible regime!! And Lula and social justice will be soon be back as well!!

I'd have liked to hear a bit more about the difference between Brazil and the U.S. in terms of class differences as well - which interplays and weaves through the topic of 'race' in America, especially with the structural lense which the discussion took place through. I felt that the topic of race in Brazil is much more complex than a black-white issue and actually interplays with the U.S. system in a variety of complex ways. I liked that you mentioned how 'difference' is fostered by elites to legitimise crack-downs and oppression. A lot of money goes into replicating forms of violent and anti-social behaviour through music and television and other mediums. If society replicates the black-white paradigm, how can we escape it for good? In France they pretend it doesn't exist. In the U.S. it is amplified. If we are to take Haiti as an example of a semi-successful rebellion based partly on black identity, then does this mean we should always accept this 'difference' and that there is no hope of harmony of living together? Surely not.
