How EMBRACING Errors Will Male Your Better!

I was very much a perfectionist in the first half of my music career and it was terrible. I often doubted my skills and abilities as a musician, I never thought I was good enough, and I would constantly push myself really hard - too hard - to get unreasonably better.
Perfectionism, in my opinion, comes from our misguided ideas that the recordings we hear of professional musicians, and the concerts we see are all “perfect:” no wrong notes, perfect expression, & perfect execution. Then we start to think that to be any good, we need to reach
that same height. And to accomplish that we over-practice, avoid making mistakes, and focus on playing “perfectly” rather than musically. The result is frustration, injuries, and not much fun!
The truth is that there are plenty of mistakes in the performances that we see and hear. The problem is that as music students our ears and the mental representations of the music we hear are not developed enough to notice those mistakes. But I guarantee that they're there!
The fact is that errors occur in music every performance like stumbling occurs while hiking through a trail lined with protruding roots and branches. They happen OFTEN and they’re no big deal. It’s better to accept and correct them than to avoid or fight them. And in performance, the best strategy is to brush them off completey and re-focus on the goal of playing expressively and having fun.
Here are some ideas that can help you combat perfectionism:
• Accept the fact that “perfection” does not and should not exist in music practice or performance.
• In your practice, have a multu-dimensional approach and perpare yourself technically, musically, and psychologically for performance.
• Redefine a “perfect” performance
as one where you were able to express yourself the way
you wanted, not as one absent a few technical stumbles.
• Embrace mistakes as Significant Improvement Opportunities (SIOs). We need to make and correct mistakes often to improve. If we never make mistakes, we can never improve.
• Remind yourself often that Paco de Lucía and Andrés Segovia were human beings (even though it may not seem like it!). They made plenty of mistakes in their practice and performances!
