I think England definitely CAN win, they've got more depth than Spain and a lot of game changers. But yeah I think Spain are big favourites and are somehow being underestimated (in general, not necessarily on this pod or by its listeners) which is mad when you consider how they've played and that they've won 6 out of 6. I guess there's a lot of casual fans commenting on football as there usually is in tournaments which leads of England being talked up a lot more than their performances deserve. Don't blame anyone for getting over excited though, kind of what football is all about.

@@Rob-cy8xc "you can only beat what’s in front of you, which is what England have done" yes, but england didn't even beat Slovenia and Denmark and then barely beat Slovakia, then got past Netherlands thanks to ref. Spain on the other hand just won every match they played. And some of those were against Germany, Croatia, Italy and France.

@@ColliderQZ Spain are favourites on tournament performance but let’s put things in some context, Portugal didn’t beat Slovenia either, the same Slovenia that had only lost one game in their last 20+. Who’s to know how Spain would have got on playing physically robust low block teams again and again. Let’s look at who Spain have played - underestimated by a weak and aging Croatia, only managed a 1-0 win against probably the worst Italian team we’ve seen, had back to back games against the two lowest ranked teams in the competition in Albania and Georgia, the former of which they could beat with a B team and rest some legs, the latter a team who were admired for having a go but ultimately whose naivety cost them. Then by fine margins, they were minutes away from going home on penalties to Germany (because that would have been inevitable if Merino hadn’t scored that header), and finally faced a massively underperforming and probably overrated french team going through thanks to two outstanding moments. Spain have beaten some teams with big reputations but Germany aside (and very few had Germany as favourites before their first game), none of those teams have lived up to expectations. Of course England haven’t lived up to expectations either but if it wasn’t for fine margins the Dutch could have easily been on the end of another 4-1 hammering. Perception may be different then. It was, in the first half at least, a much improved performance and a fully deserved victory against a good if not top side. They will need to improve once more to stay in the game against Spain though but the journey both teams have taken is very different and I don’t think Spain have necessarily done it “the hard way” as it’s being made out
