Thank you for your comment Ma'am. This video is about the current govt's policy changes - that is the subject of the video. So naturally the points are focussed on what happened in the last ten years. That is the relevent issue at this moment. I don't know if you saw the full video - I have included positive policy changes brought in by this govt - Swachh Bharat Mission and Single Use Plastic Ban. Both points have been covered in the video.

Well researched and articulated, however one pointer on the single use plastics, the only positive one seems also to be rehtorical as just today's Hindu carried an article that at the UN, India will not agree to Ban single use plastic but regulate. The article is titled: " Ahead of U.N. meet, India chooses to ‘regulate’, not ban, single-use plastic; In 2022, India brought into effect the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules (2021) that banned 19 categories of ‘single-use’ plastics"

For Environmental Law, I would recommend a book called Environmental Law and Policy in India by Shyam Divan and Armin Rosencranz. It is a very good book to get an idea about law, policy, history, environmental movements. Get the latest edition. For India's env history - you can check out Ramchandra Guha's book called This Fissured Land - An ecological history of India. For information on latest policy changes and ground realities - you can follow some of the resources I've linked below the video (Down to Earth, Mongabay etc) Hope this helps.

It is very good to point out the lapses and dilution made to many laws. Activism these days are not naive. Many times, they are funded by unseen political or religious or international parties who seem to be aggrieved by actions of the current govt, unlike days of Mr. MC Mehta where most protests were genuine. Rio conference of 1992 declared Environment and Development as the way to go. Though it is agreed that the dilution to EIA, etc should be limited, the provisions in our constitution make it impossible to bring about big improvement in our country if people are allowed to debate about it endlessly. Classic case is farm law which wanted to revolutionize the way farmers had access to free market to sell their produce, etc. Instead of constructive debates, despite the govt asking leaders to come forward to discuss on specific clauses of concern, none of them did. And it was funded by other countries to derail development. Laws had to be repealed. At the end of the day, as a lawyer, you should already be well aware that it is impossible to have big development like the west or china without some destruction of green cover. And many of these NGOs which were involved in the protests had their bases in countries like Canada, US who have their vested interests to see that India remains a poor, underdeveloped country incompetent of talking at their levels. If the current govt has given an unfair advantage to some businesses, that should definitely be investigated. Remember the Kamal Nath case of 1990s. But that apart, continuing the attitude of protest, activism similar to pre-independence days shows vested interests than interest in genuine development of this country. Front-loading of such issues should be done by engaging with bureaucrats, ministers with alternate methods of amendments as soon as such policies are framed, rather than crying after laws have been amended.
@treetalkwithmallikaravikumar
@treetalkwithmallikaravikumar 4 месяца назад
Thank you so much for seeing the video and leaving your comment. It is rare to find a comment where one is discussing the points mentioned in the content, without making personal remarks - I really appreciate it. Thank you...I really wish more people could follow your example. That is exactly what we need to foster a culture of healthy debate. As regards the points raised by you - I agree that things are different today than they were in the days of activism by MC Mehta and Sundarlal Bahuguna. Undoubtedly. But at the same time, it is also not healthy to generalise all activism as being unhealthy or anti-national. It should not become an axe to grind those who oppose the govt stand or whose views differ from that of the state (such as what happened with journalist Abhisar Sharma). Many of the policies were opposed by people and groups by engaging in dialogue with the govt, raising objections when the bills were proposed - it is not that it wasn't done. But the mainstream media did not cover it at all. Given most people are being deliberately kept distracted from real issues, there is little chance of public awareness or open debate about the matter. Policy changes are repeatedly being made to favour certain industrialists and groups. It is important to talk about it. Discussion is not about crying after the amendment - it is about raising awareness and flagging the issue to the extent possible to permit an informed discussion - because the mainstream media exists in a parellel universe.

All your points are quite valid ma’am. Do you think our economy (which still is in its infancy) could ever grow with the pace or scale we need it to , to be able to feed/ defend/ sustain our population size while at the same time keeping in mind the ecological nuances / check and balances. Like, doesn’t it take eons already to get anything done in this country. Are we in a stage in the life of this country to even aspire to ,let alone able to be “idealistic “ as far as bureaucratic/systemic checks and balances are concerned. I don’t know myself. However, i do agree that this government doesn’t listen to, infact demonises subject experts and then falls flat on face after every stupid move. ( Just for context: My father had to endure punishment posting while being in forest service years ago for exposing mishappenings in his allotted area, he had to take help from WWF for the same) Thanks.
@treetalkwithmallikaravikumar
@treetalkwithmallikaravikumar 4 месяца назад
Your father was in the forest dept...wow...then you may have grown up very near or inside a forest :) Sad to hear about his experience...I have read about many such cases of good people getting penalised for doing their job honestly. But it is because of these honest people that we have the forest and wildlife we have. So their contribution is valuable. And yes, its true that development and infrastructure are necessary. But two issues to ask are (a) is it sustainable and (b) who is it benefitting? The coal mines are benefiting city people but the people suffering are the tribals.....who are losing their land but not getting any benefit of that development. At the least, these processes need to take place with transparent discussions about it in the media so the citizens are informed and aware. Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts. Please do share the video in your circles. Thank you :)

@@treetalkwithmallikaravikumarThe economic growth, technological advancement, and wealth generation in mega urban centers are funding many welfare schemes in the country, benefiting mostly those who are not from these cities. Should we then ask the government to stop withdrawing money from these urban centers? The cities in this country are already overcrowded. Should we demand a special set of rules to prevent people from other parts of India from settling in these cities? Please do answer, as many people have tried to convince me about the importance of the 6th schedule and the special powers of the so-called 'Adi-Vasis'. They explain why I am not an 'AdiVasi' but a 'NayaVasi', yet I remain unconvinced. I really want to understand their reasoning. There are scientists who are discussing climate change, and there are many scientists who are questioning their methodology, as the predictions of the former do not match the data. Though I myself believe that there is a climate crisis, unfortunately, individual belief is not science. So why are people who are in the second camp considered stupid?

@@utsabgangopadhyaya4274 ...thank you for taking the time to watch the video and your very detailed insightful comment. Really value it because the idea of putting out this video is to have a discussion with people with all perspectives. I agree development is necessary - nobody will deny it. But there is plenty of data to show that income and wealth disparity have widened. I have given some examples here and there are many more showing how a few industrialists (esp Ambani, Adani) have been getting special favours and "developing" at the cost of others. So the challenge is not to development but the manner in which it is taking place. As far as the question of Adviasi is concerned, as I say in my video - the colonial powers thought their way of life (their religion, culture, language) was better than that of the native countries they conquered and imposed it everywhere, including in India. The question of what the native people really wanted was not asked. Maybe reading about the Niyamgiri case in Odisha would give you some insight into this. Or a very good Suno India Podcast about what the tribals of Hasdeo in Chhattisgarh are really saying. Their sacred forests and mountains are more valuable to them. Most others, value the coal below. it is a clash of priorities and perspectives. And we are imposing our world view of GDP and development on theirs.

So the challenge is not to development but the manner in which it is taking place. " You are absolutely right! I completely agree with you on this. But why do you think GDP and development are only our worldview? They are not animals who only need protection; they are us. Is it too much to ask for them to take part in this fight for development? Because if we lose, they will also be affected. I don't think anyone believes that the culture of Hasdeo or any other place like it is in any way inferior to the rest of India. So why should we bear the colonial shame? Everyone finds the environment they live in or grew up in to be quite sacred. It is their comfort zone. So why is more importance given to what a particular group considers sacred, but not what the other group considers sacred? I think these are very important questions for people like me who are concerned about the environment but find that most forums are more concerned with "giving or extracting special privileges" for a particular group than with how to improve the environment." The only thing that this does is, it distances these people from any forms related to protection of the environment or biodiversity.
