The power assist is only activated in an emergency, when the door is "armed." When the mode selector in the "disarmed" position, door operation is entirely manual. That's why the door is normally opened by the boarding bridge operator - it's easier and safer to pull the door from the outside. It's well-balanced, but still quite heavy.
