A few comments from a marshal: - I don't think a lot of people realise how difficult it is for drivers to see flags displayed from traditional post locations. They are often off to one side and the drivers are looking so far through the corner that they only catching physical flags with the corner of their eyes at best. The light panels and steering wheel lights put the information straight into their eyeline. - In F1 races, marshals do not control the blue flags, that system is automatic (so Toto, you can pipe down about making sure Mazepin got them shown to him). - The location of the light panel marshal isn't always great. The normal flag posts have a good view of your sector, but the light panel controller can be squirrelled away somewhere with a rubbish view of what's going on and they are padlocked in place, so you can't relocate. - The lights do lose a level of information transfer to the drivers. All the yellow lights look the same, but when we display flags, the urgency with which they are displayed matters. The marshal with the yellow flag is typically holding one flag as they have to radio Race Control whenever they display it. This means there is a natural delay before double yellows are shown, but an "urgent" single yellow does get the message out that something is serious, rather than a car in gravel which (should) require no avoiding action. - The medical system is superb. The cars are equipped with a blue 'medical' light which pulses when an impact reaches a certain threshold. If there is an incident with cars equipped with these lights, and I see it lit, I know two things: I need to report to race control immediately for medical assistance, and that medical help is likely already on its way.
@midnightfuture
@midnightfuture 3 года назад
RE urgency information lost with light panels, can the blink interval perhaps communicate that? A slow-blinking yellow (say 0.5s interval) could be normal, but a fast blinking one (0.25s) means something major happened, and is likely to escalate to double-yellows, VSC, SC, or even red flag. Thanks for the insightful comment!

Communication is the key with this approach. Everyone knows the instant a Marshall pressed the button. Of course that relies on good Marshall training. It kinda operates a little how a modern railway signalling system works, by telling the driver about the incident as they approach the area, obviously it is more complex on a railway, but it has a similar concept.

Exactly what I thought. AI and technology is so advanced nowadays but knowing that people don’t just blindly rely on it until it is really ready to just work without human interaction at all, puts a reassuring feeling in my heart. AI and technology is only good when they work perfectly, when they still not, we still gonna need human interaction.

I hear you. I got into F1 about a year and a half ago, and finding Stuart's channel quickly made me feel so much more informed about many aspects of the sport that usually only get picked up slowly over long periods of time. Hell, I've been a NASCAR fan for about 15 years and in less than 2 I think I learned more about F1 engines and design than I have about NASCAR.

Why do Americans feel compelled to introduce themselves when doing so much as commenting on a video? I don't mean this as an attack, but I'm quite worn from this unfortunate tradition
@JimTheFly
@JimTheFly 3 года назад
@@dateymintah9585 I think it's because here in the US, it's still viewed as a very European and not covered much at all. You want NASCAR? There's 2 major networks that carry it during the year on their primary or secondary channels. IndyCar? Most of that series is on NBC, with the rest on their sports channel. You want to watch Formula 1? Until this year it was on either ESPN2 or ESPNU (yes, they stuck it on the station that was originally created for college sports), usually very early in the morning because of time differences, and no replay. At least this year it's on ESPN and gets a replay later during the day. And during news broadcasts, in many areas of the country, you'll get NASCAR results (including the Trucks and Xfinity series, which are sort of like F2 & F3 in a sense, but not quite), and sometimes Indycar results. F1? Nah. In the southern states, that's EXTREMELY true since that's the hotbed of NASCAR. But even in other areas it's the case. I'm not sure I can remember the last time I saw anything F1 related on the local news (I'm from near New York City) since we had the proposed race in this area that got scrapped, aside from the Grosjean crash. Formula 1 is really starting to gain more traction here in the US (as exemplfied by it being on ESPN and how I'm seeing more F1 RU-vidrs talking about America being one of their top 2 locations for viewers), and the fact that we've got 2 races here starting next year could be HUGE for its growth, but it's still really somewhat niche.

I was a race marshall at Mosport, Shannonville (small club track in southern Ontraio) and at the Montreal GP in the early 80's. Thanks for this. It's awesome to see the advancements. Question » How is blue flagging handled today? Back in the day, that was very difficult to do well. The blue flag marshall needed to stay on top of the driver positions, with no communications from race control, no electronics, radios, or TV, while only having a visual on the immediate sector.
@ALLRNDCRICKETER
@ALLRNDCRICKETER 3 года назад
Would be similar to how they do yellow flags etc. The driver in car gets the display on the wheel, & I believe their racing number is displayed on the panel with blue around it in relation to their position on track
@donhowson279
@donhowson279 3 года назад
I depends on the race location. At some races, almost all flags are called from the tower. At others, the flaggers are left to do what they are trained to do. In some cases, it is a reflection on the experience level of the local marshals. In Montreal we are free to flag. I work all the major series in North America. Frankly, I find F1 the easiest to flag. Only 20 cars, liveries which make identifying teams at a distance easy, short pit stops. In Montreal, though, reaction time is the challenge. At most flag posts, you only have about 1 second to make a flag decision. Not uncommon at street circuits.

These light boards can flash up a blue light and the car number of the car being lapped during the race which is done automatically when the lapping car is a couple of seconds away I think blue lights without any car number in practice and qualifying is manual though.

Yeah, or if you have a Windows 10 computer, it is super easy to record good quality audio from a microphone. Just get the person you’re interviewing to search for the voice recorder app on their PC, it is there by default, then just hit the start recording button before the interview, and you’re golden, the file will be saved into the documents folder, E-mail it over and you’re done. Sure I've read that when a marshal presses the yellow flag button the next light board turns green, and when double yellow is shown the previous light board turns yellow automatically. Useful to get that instant change for the drivers rather than having to wait for a marshal at the previous post to notice and wave a flag.

A related question I'm curious about is how blue flagging works - presumably the marshals in sector 8 don't know that Verstappen is coming up behind (say) Vettel in sector 7, so they need to show Vettel the blue flag in sector 8, right? So how does that work? Is it just a constant stream of verbal instructions to the marshals from race control or is it more automatic?
@SuperMech

@SeasickSkeleton 3 года назад
I've never done Formula One, but in practice and qualifying sessions you basically just have to know which cars are faster. You have a window of vision that's different at each post where you have to figure out who's faster and display blues. In Australia we have a lot of support races for Supercars, our National touring car series, and in those support races, race control doesn't help very much with blue flags. We pretty much have to pay attention to gaps lap by lap, with no timing or broadcast to know who has pitted. For Supercars, however, race control will let us know when a car starts to be lapped with a radio call like "Race control to all posts, blue flags for car 4."
@SeasickSkeleton

I was trackside 2 days ago, if you've got questions let me know
@RadeticDaniel
@RadeticDaniel 3 года назад
@@SeasickSkeleton nice insight you gave us here, thanks a lot o/ since F1 is impossible to see the car numbers at speed from a stationary observing position, my guess is race control commands blue flags for back markers, as the number of the car shows up at the pole screen otherwise marshalls would have to remeber both numbers for each team, make out the livery and spot the black or yellow differentiator at the top of the car seems unfair to expect that from someone working with race safety first
@donhowson279
@donhowson279 3 года назад
No, it is the skill of the flagger. With experience, you are able to keep track of the running order of the cars. In F1, with only 20 cars and each team having a unique livery, it is not especially hard to spot which team is approaching, and the colour of the camera pod tells you whether it is the primary or secondary car/driver. Blue flaggers don't always have radios and and when they do, sometimes there is too much chatter and can be distracting. There are tricks, as well. To estimate the first lapped car, we measure the time between the last car and the first car. Fast or slow, pro drivers maintain fairly consistent lap times. So you can estimate the number of laps to the first lap, and even whether the pass will be at or near your station.

Thanks, this series talking to people working in F1 is great! This helped me understand why Sainz wasn't penalized for passing Ocon in the straight at Zandvoort when Bottas broke down, and the whole debate about whether he has gotten ahead before or after getting to the marshal manually waving the flag. I thought he should have received the signal on his steering wheel and slowed down. Guess it just so happened that Bottas stopped at the beginning of a sector and Sainz used the fact that his sector wasn't lit yet to his advantage. Was still reckless and unsafe, imo, and it wasn't his first offense in the race. Maybe a trackside positioning system instead of one relying on satellites could make it reliable enough so it can have legal value.

Very interesting video. Not all tracks work the same way though. As an F1 Marshal for Yas Marina (Post 10), the vast majority of the flag panels are now controlled centrally from race control and the marshal only controls the panels in some F2 or F3 qualifying or practice; I guess this is to avoid errors in incorrect displaying or pressure as you mentioned. Despite this, physical flag use is still required, as is the showing of VSC or SC boards at all marshal posts. The instruction for this still comes via radio to the Post Chief, who informs the marshals of their action i.e. put out board, yellow flag, clear debris from track etc.

I think the next step would be to add video cameras that connects to machine learning that set off alarm if the drivers went off track or violated track limit. Then the race control can verify the alarm to check if it is not a software error and make decision on the appropriate warning/penalty to be applied. This has advantage over race control actively monitoring each corner and allow them to focus on safety and other more important works.

I knew there were accelerometers SOMEWHERE in order to figure out impact G’s, but hadn’t really thought of exactly where. Great idea for them to be located in the earpieces, and makes perfect sense!

That was really interesting. Great to hear from Luca about the system, especially about them keeping human marshalls and why. Technology is a wonderful thing, but it's only as infallible as the people who make it!

Fantastic video chap. I'd be fascinated to see what the technical solution to monitoring track limits is, if GPS isn't precise enough.

It was really nice to hear the immediate reactions from the other drivers after the Grosjean accident. You could tell they were all genuinely concerned for him and not mad about the race stopping. They know it's serious when that red light appears.

Holy cow! I would have sworn that different companies handled the different systems. One for flags, one for the GPS, another for the accelerometers etc etc

That’d be an integration nightmare
