As a journalist with extensive experience, Ali has had the opportunity to witness all forms of news. One type in particular poses a threat that has been exacerbated in our digital media society - fake news. Ali discusses the problems of fake news, how we are all affected by it, and how individuals can ensure the news they’re reading is rooted in fact, not fiction.
Ali Velshi is an anchor & correspondent with MSNBC. Most recently, he hosted “Ali Velshi On Target” on Al Jazeera America, covering the Presidential campaign, ISI, the refugee crisis, the Iran deal, Russia/NATO tensions, and Greece’s debt crisis, among other global affairs and economic issues. Before that, Velshi was CNN’s Chief Business Correspondent, and authored two finance books.
Velshi has been nominated for three Emmy Awards and he holds a B.A and an honorary Doctorate from Canada’s Queen’s University. Velshi is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and serves on the Boards of the X-Prize Foundation, Seeds of Peace, and the Chicago History Museum. He volunteers weekly with New York’s homeless outreach program.

The problem with the mainstream media is not one of putting out things that are not factually true, it is what mainstream media selects as newsworthy, and worse, what it chooses not to report. A second problem is the mixing of commentary with news. Each night before I watch the news, I already know what the take-away will be depending on which station I am watching. The words that are used to describe a story communicate a commentary. Shocking disclosure as opposed to this person said…. Cold blooded killer as opposed to this person defending himself. It is impossible to discuss race relationships or gender differences without somebody being accused of hate speech or bigotry. The version of “fake news” that the mainstream media practices is only telling one side of the story, or not telling a story at all if it does not pass the political correctness test.

@@uriahhammock3731 couldn't agree more. :) I miss the days when folks talked to one another with civility on politics. That said, don't lose hope! I've had very constructive debates with a handful (okay less than that. Thinkers on political matters on RU-vid are getting hard to find since a lot of what gets thrown out to be discussed is our reactions, our beliefs, and many of us are loathe to betray them) of people. Even a firearms enthusiast the one time. If someone is informed enough to make a good point, then I say, let them make it. I will listen, and even learn. Unfortunately (as you can see 1 post up), some folks don't give much a damn about that though. But the jokes ultimately on them. Trick is, don't let them guide the discussion, and continue to engage with the more thoughtful, constructive, and helpful individuals. It's not hard to find the good guys, just look for the ones who still treat people like people, rather than a rival in a wrestling match. Takes expertise that we don't have to determine anyone's legitimacy ("bot or not?"), or help them find a better way forward, so let's simply lead by example instead of sinking down into the murk.

Excellent talk. I wish they would talk more about the need for public broadcasters as the CBC as well as private for profit broadcasters. The "business" because of money and profit does not always hold power accountable. Large advertisers or companies- are they reported on with the same vigour and commitment to bear witness and speak truth to power? Bell media owns CTV and the Globe and Mail. Are negative stories about Bell going to make it into those outlets?

Instead of just calling out conspiracy theory culture as some malign phenomena, maybe the establishment needs to ask why it's so hated? I mean there were thousands of false conspiracy theories laid at the door of the French monarchy, which, in part, we now blame the French aristocracy for bringing upon itself. That the general greed, corruption, lies, decadence and violence of the aristocracy led to fantastical speculation on behalf of its subjects. .

One of my all time favorite Ted talks. When I was in High school, formal debate was considered a core competency skill and therefore successful participation in live debates was mandatory. I am fairly certain that there is not a single extroversion trait to be found in my gene pool, possibly crowded out by the very strong genetic propensity for Generalized Anxiety and Panic Disorder. Active participation in public debate was nothing short of torture for me and I am sure I would have avoided it at any cost had I had that option. I don't know when Public Debate was officially removed from the list of core competencies required to earn a high school diploma but I believe that doing so was a grave mistake and we are already witnessing the first negative consequences. Social platforms have expanded the opportunity to participate in meaningful, public debate for nearly every human alive, while search engines have made it possible to gather mountains of information on any subject, limited only by the individual's internet research skill set. Logic says we should be the most enlightened, least gullible population in recorded history. Why then, do we seem to be actively trying to "devolve" by rejecting well-established fact and generations of accumulated knowledge in favor of base level tribalism, willful ignorance, and a brutal "might makes right" moral code? Fear? Laziness? Stress and Sensory overload? Magnetic pole reversal? CIA mass mind control? Corporate scumbaggery? I can't shake off an uneasy feeling that our continued existence on this planet may depend on our determining who or what is responsible for the dramatic decline of personal integrity and basic human kindness and eliminating the source.

I’ve always found Velshi an interesting “listen”, and I go along with all that he says here - except when he gets a query about his source (at 5.20), and he asserts, “Now c’mon, I’m not a journalism student, I’m a veteran journalist in my 24th year”, adding that he could be disciplined or even fired for purveying fake news. The clear implication - that “he” should not be asked to disclose his source because he’s not a cub reporter, and c’mon, he’s accountable for his reporting - borders on arrogance. A junior reporter is also accountable, and equally risks dismissal for “fake news”. Unfortunately, seniority - equating as it does with “power” - all too often trails in a level of haughtiness - it seems to be a given of the human condition.

If the major news networks seem biased towards liberialism, it could be because reality is biased towards liberialism. Most people in their daily lives have liberal views: do unto others, help the orphans and widows, brother's keeper, cast the first stone.I It is in the matters of politics, business and love relationships that people's ideology suddenly become conservative.

Why do you view 'do unto others, help the orphans and widows, brother's keepers, and cast the first stone' as liberal views? Not only do I, as a conservative, have those views but I also live by them. Maybe, just maybe, those views don't belong to a political party but rather to good people from all walks of life!

Respectfully... what are you on about? Burden of proof is on you for that, cause the man fixed a recession/put people back to work, gave us a wildly popular (nationwide) healthcare framework so that your providers couldn't cheat you anymore the second you got sick after taking your $ for years and years (while simultaneously reducing medical expenses for the state, cause many things that can be tough and expensive to treat later in development are super easy to deal with when caught early, and, of note, he agrees that the subsidy could be higher to help American families), oversaw the complete pwnage + socom style teabagging of Osama Bin Ladin... And that's sort of the tip of the iceberg. So um... what? This stuff isn't horrible for you. What's your beef with the guy? :U

nonono. Legitimate journalists so often tell people what they think of what is happening instead of what is happening, labelling, refusing to report, leaving out vital information for understanding, Like "The US attacks Berlin with bombs" if we had had the same kind of journalists in 1944 as we have today. They will then label anyone who points out that it is a war and the germans allies attacked first as racists. That is what we are dealing with now. Thank you, Karl Marx.

He didn’t acknowledge the reasons why people are losing faith in traditional media. He did acknowledge a Reporter refusing to ask the tough questions because they want the guest to return. He didn’t acknowledge a media outlet refusing to run a story Because it would upset the share holders. He did acknowledge that the owner of the media outlet has the final say on what is newsworthy and not the reporter. He did not acknowledge that corporations are so rich and the System is so corrupt they can purchase the media outlets to control the narrative.

While he touched upon sponsored content, there was no mention of content that is 'sponsored' but not labelled so. It may not be a 'lie' so to speak -twisting words, shaping the headlines and news contents so they leave a certain impression by well recognized journos and news outlets is nothing new nor something that's specific to USA. I believe most readers, at least those who follow multiple sources, see patterns in reporting before they form opinion about certain individual or publication. On the other hand, confirming news can be a time like Ali mentioned, especially in hurried life that people lead as it's not always easy as verifying whether someone has passed or not. Add to that the addiction of social media and as a result, people share/RT out of habit, even for a post that has nothing to do with their political or religious beliefs..

Okay, so I was hoping for an unbiased observation, and I didn't know who this guy was at first. As he talked on and on I kept hearing the little biases in his speech. After reading the comments I realized that he is from MSNBC. Really?! So someone who is part of the problem is going to tell you what the problem is?! It's really sick.
