I hated herbert n I know other ppl who were SA as kids who hated him as well but I think getting rid of him is kind of dumb. He just grossed me out n I felt like he was overall annoying. I also find the giant chicken n his fights with Peter annoying . After seeing the same joke play out it's like ok I fucking get it. Herbert is a pedo n the giant chicken hates Peter how many times r we gonna tell the same joke. Although herbert never made me laugh, I guess I can see how other people who were SA might find him funny. He honestly made me cringe tho. Everyone has their limits. Some people use edgy jokes to help them heal. Point is that no one should tell you how to work through your pain as an individual. I was in a group therapy session a few years ago with a woman who had been assaulted, and she used dark humor as a coping strategy. The therapist leading the group basically shamed her for using humor as a coping strategy. I called them out for it, and they didn’t say anything about it for the rest of the session. But everybody has a different way of dealing with stuff. Me? I had a stroke when I was 17, and yet I find the episode where Peter has one to be hilarious. I crack up whenever I see his exaggeratedly droopy face. Point is, everyone is different and that’s okay. I hope you’re doing better now.

Adulthood is to Disney as kryptonite is to Superman. Any fan of *Bedknobs and Broomsticks* can tell you that the lyrics of "The Age of Not Believing" reflect how Disney has historically had trouble getting over the perception that western animation is just for kids, which somewhere along the line turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy. That seem to happen once the boomers started becoming adults, at least in the physical sense. That movie is actually a step on the road to Touchstone because they showed how much you can get away with with a G rating in the context of a story about middle-aged people in love. Bottom line: they were still implying what other studios' movies were showing explicitly.

I find it hilarious that Chris Hansen got busted for bouncing a check when his career was built on exploiting one of the worst Supreme Court rulings in American history.

He gets around more because he's an airplane pilot and he's a spring chicken compared to Herbert. He's still got a few years left where he can score with women who aren't also elderly.

I've never been able to get into that show, but I'm not surprised that Disney is making its mark on that show and not in a good way. They do this every time. It's one thing when they are adapting obscure English children's books for the screen since they need Disney versions in order to get people to read the OGs. But when it is a TV show with an established fan base, then we really have a problem. Maybe this is why I did not develop any emotional attachment to it. I knew this would happen. I saw how the other Fox cartoons played out.

They tried to give him a backstory and they tried to give him redeeming characteristics. But can somebody as sick as this even be redeemed? Even so, how is his behavior worse than that of other characters on this show? Peter beats up chickens. Lois is a h0. Stewie wants to kill his mother. Chris and Meg have a host of issues that each justify their own individual videos. Quagmire is a lothario. Brian is into bestiality. I don't even want to know what Mr. and Mrs. Goldman do in their private lives. We don't even see him actually doing these things. All we get is implication.

That’s what bothers me, in my opinion if you’re going to get rid of one character for the nature of its comedy you should consider the other one as well, as both were extremely ‘out there’, if you know what I mean.

To be fair, the Family Guy writers have been trying to “redeem” Quagmire for a while now. There are several episodes in which Quagmire is thrown into the role of a hero and the results were definitely.. mixed. I agree with you though, the decisions Family Guy makes with it’s characters will never not confuse me.

I disagree to some extent, yeah he's not as bad as Pepe but for a mature (as mature as PG16 you can get) cartoon that kinda defeats the joke. Herbert being a POW survivor, veteran, and patriot while also being a sick creep is the type of conflicting reaction you're expected to have, him being a funny character also adds on to the absurdity. From what I can recall, Pepe was supposed to have a role for Space Jam 2 and he was supposed to be lectured about consent but WB, at least I think it was WB, just axed him off altogether because it was safer to ignore his existence than try to explain what's not appropriate and face the inevitable online backlash. I think the best metaphor is thinking Herbert as the fart joke character, it's only funny when you least expect it but it gets stale very fast.

"Change the channel" is a copout argument. Sometimes it's the channel that needs to change. When it's The Disney Channel, they changed before, they can change again. I think a lot of people like the idea of Disney more than the reality of it based on the things they liked about it when they were kids. My childhood overlapped with Disney bouncing back from nearly getting taken over, but it still felt like Disney because it was the last years before they bought ABC.

Fox won't let it go. None of the remaining 90s cartoons want to be the first to say goodbye.
