In this segment of our “How far away is it” video book, we cover the Andromeda galaxy along with our local group of galaxies, including some of the dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way.
We begin with Edwin Hubble’s discovery of a Cepheid variable star in what was thought to be a Milky Way nebula. The star was V1 and it changed the history of astronomy. We also take a deep dive into the galaxy’s disk, and point out what was going on here on our planet when the light we see left Andromeda on its journey into our telescopes. We finish with a look at Andromeda’s collision course with our Milky Way.
Next, we identify the local group of galaxies including: Triangulum with its great star birth H II region NGC 604; irregular galaxy NGC 6822 with its unique Hubble V H II region; the recently discovered galaxy IC 10; nearly edge on galaxy 3109; and Sextans A.
We then cover 5 of the dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way including Sagittarius Dwarf, Sculptor Dwarf and Fornax Dwarf along with the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud. Then we examine some of the amazing nebula within these two dwarf galaxies including: Supernova Remnant N 63A, SN 0509-67.5, the Tarantula Nebula, 30 Doradus, Hodge 301, the Double Bubble, LH 95, NGC 2074, NGC 602, NGC 346 and others. We conclude with a review of the galaxies we covered marked on a map of the Local Group.

I Don't see how it's humanly possible to watch this program & take in the information without feeling incomparably tiny. The telescopes that are world has been launching over the last 15 or 20 years are simply and truly amazing and it just gets better every day. I was watching the show and marveling at the fact that they could zoom in and the resolution was mapping time as we zoomed in unbelievable remarkable astounding I don't know any other adjectives that could really describe this thank you

To the best of our knowledge, all heroes wear capes. However, we recognize that many heroes may or may not wear capes. Also, some villains wear capes. I suppose the point is, do not judge anyone wearing a cape simply by the fact that they are or are not wearing a cape. A cape is not an accurate measure of heroic intent. But David Butler is totes a hero.

it still blows my mind that, although these stars look so densely packed, there’s trillions of miles between them. it’s inconceivable how massive our universe is. massive isn’t even close enough to describe the insanity of it. i’ll forever be fascinated and also sad that i cant experience these beautiful sights first hand with my own eyes. the only reason we can see these massive objects is because of their distance, to be able to see it with the naked eye would be incredible and impossible but we can daydream 💭

Even within our local cluster are billions and billions and billions of stars; all with countless planets surround almost each and every star. How many of those have life? And life that are technologically evolved like ours?!? We I’ll never know! And how amazing is that we we live in a time where we can send up satellites like Hubble, Chandra, Gaia, and now JWST!! Carl Sagan would be pleased. Not all of the brightest astronomers and astrophysicists are able to communicate what they know to an audience of lay persons in a way that we can understand. You have that gift. It’s just sad that we have so much light pollution that it’s difficult, even with a good telescope, (a local university has one just a short drive away, but even it is difficult to view, due to the local light pollution) to see anything close to the detail shown here. Thank you for the care, effort, and attention to detail you have put into your videos.

John Cronin ,🤔🤔Now You Have Me Wondering Why They Built an Observatory In a Heavily Light Polluted Area
@johncronin9540
@johncronin9540 4 года назад
PafMedic I live in Massachusetts. Light pollution is a problem almost everywhere in the eastern part of the state. The observatory was part of an upgrade of a local college to a university, and the observatory is atop a whole new science building. That’s a problem also, because anyone walking in lower floors of the building causes vibrations which affect the quality of the viewing. This isn’t just a problem with this university. Light pollution is a problem around the globe. Just viewing through the atmosphere is difficult, not just because of the twinkling, caused by the atmosphere, but because our atmosphere blocks many parts of the EM spectrum from reaching the surface. This is good for life on Earth, but tough for observers. I think the next step is an observatory on the far side of the Moon. That solves the light pollution problem, and we could build instruments that can explore across the entire EM spectrum. And “night” lasts two entire weeks. But this telescope is good for an introduction to astronomy, and it’s open to the public one night a week (though not now, during the pandemic).

To think of the total number of stars shown in this video is mind-boggling yet, the number of planets orbiting those stars may be even far greater.

And when the light from Andromeda reached our planet, what we see is where it was because it's somewhere else. If you put a stationary disk with radial lines in Andromeda, and another RIGID one spinning, you'll see that the spinning one now has "S" shaped "straight" lines because the time it takes light to go from one end, through the center, to the other end. We see the past. Never the present as it takes time to think.

I have been out in the fields on Earth in spring time, beautiful flowers, plants and trees. This video shows us that the sky and space can rival the Earth in its beauty! Good content, and Nice images. Thanks God and the scientists and engineers who made these images and information available, and thanks you Dr. David Butler for presenting them to us. Well done, Thanks.

Whoooo! you had me pretty scared there for a minute when you said Andromeda was on a collision course with the Milky way. That was until you said it would take 4 billion years to reach us. I calmed down after that because I figure I'll probably be dead by then anyway.

Absolutely amazing. Love the narration. If this was taught to me in school before any building blocks in science such as physics, I probably would have paid attention and worked backwards. Sometimes you have to see the bigger picture to understand the smaller details of what makes it work. Going to use the night sky app to track and study these in Augmented Reality 👌🏼👌🏼

Its always a little difficult for me to understand the scale of the universe. These videos, with their sweeping graphics and clear narration, really help me get a grip on concepts such as cosmic distance and deep time, and the nuances of mass and gravity. Thank you so much for putting this work out here, where even a high school drop out can watch and learn for free.

@@ominous-omnipresent-they If you believe in the God of the Bible, the Word of the One True God, YHVH, then you believe in the creation of Adam and Eve. God blessed them and told them to take dominion over all the earth and all things here. God gave them one warning: Not to eat of the forbidden "fruit", else they would die that "day" ("One day to God is as one thousand years to man.") Eve was tempted by a "serpent"; tempted TO disobey, tempted TO defy God's command, tempted TO taste what appeared "good to eat" (was the serpent eating the "fruit"?) . She did not fear the serpent/dragon. The serpent did not threaten to harm her or her husband. *By persuasion alone was Eve deceived to believe a lie.* God cursed both Eve and Adam, the earth, and the serpent/dragon. Evil, sin and death entered this world because of their disobedience. Adam lost his dominion and the evil one took over. *But God.* Not without a promise of Redemption for Eve and Adam's descendants to return unto God. Who stipulated the required redemptive price of *innocent blood* ? We are not privy to the laws and commands between the evil one and our Creator God, but the evil one knew there could NEVER hence be any man with *innocent* blood. So such was the price. God promised there would be One to pay that ransom. The evil one tried killing and mixing the "seed of the woman" to stop that Redeemer ("The sons of God [fallen angels] saw that the daughters of men were beautiful [compared to ??] and *took them and had offspring* ") . (Think Eve was an exception? She had already sinned.) Cain, one interpretation, says "was the son of the evil one", killed Abel. The pagan rulers had male Jewish children killed at least twice in Scripture. What the evil one did not know, was that out of the *love* God has for man, God chose to pay that price of *innocent* blood Himself, and redeem us back to Him through a human form of Himself, Jesus *the Christ* , not a mere "prophet". Islam claims: *GOD HAS NO SON.* So, no, you are indeed wrong. The Qu'ran completely denies mankind's need for redemption even though God established the sacrifice of innocent animals "with no defect" to be a temporary ATONEMENT for His people's sins. The Qu'ran refuses to accept that an all powerful God CANNOT stoop so low as to sacrifice Himself for His *CHILDREN* . And if there were no other differences between Christianity and Islam, that alone should wake you up to the *fact* that Christianity and Islam do *NOT* serve the same God. Men make God in *their* image, and, therefore, believe He is too MASCULINE to sacrifice Himself for His creation. They do not know all the attributes of God: *love* , *compassion* , *patience* , etc. A MASCULINE God, in men's logic, would NOT save a human's tears, yet His Word says He does. I leave you with one wisdom God's Holy Spirit gave me: Can God grow? My reply: NO! God is all in all! With different events that followed within a few years, I learned: God can grow. How, you ask? *CHILDREN* . Maranatha (He comes) !!!
