Maybe Ukraine thought that Russia would have to withdraw troops from Donbass, but they haven't and it is Ukraine who brought troops from Donbass, their best troops to enter this sparsely populated area of Russia. Now, their offensive has stalled, and with Ukrainian troops gone from Donbass the Russians are moving very quickly their. Russia understands that when they defeat this offense, the Ukrainians will have nothing left and the war will be won. The US just hopes it won't happen before the elections, but the US and NATO are losing everywhere from Ukraine to the Middle East. Even Afghanistan beat the US. While Ukraine launched a successful surprise attack, it is but a suicidal mission (Kherson offensive 2.0). Tactically, Russia will not be quick to push back Ukraine's advances but they will try to pocket them into a trap. They already know that Ukraine has committed enough equipment and skilled soldiers to this offense and they will not try to miss this opportunity to destroy them. A successful win for Ukraine would be a quick advance and occupying the nuclear power plant as leverage for negotiations. Any delay in this will be catastrophic to Ukraine and Russia knows that.
Does Russia even have enough reserve trained troops available to mount a pincer movement in the Kursk region? The whole point of the Ukrainian offensive is to draw Russian troops away from the grinding combat in the Donbas, but that hasn’t materialized yet. Putin probably knows this and he’s hesitant to wheel his troops around from Ukraine.

I don’t think it’s humiliation for Putin but it could be considered a loss, which is common in war. This cannot be considered a loss of the war. Putin is an intelligent leader so I’m going to see one should wait and see. I still see Russia with the upper hand.

The extent of Kursk territory held is 1,100 square kilometres (1 kilometre is the equivalent of 5/8th of a mile, do the maths, the territory held is heavily forested, and as such is untenable by any regular Armed invasion!
