Is farming burning up the planet? Modern day agriculture is contributing to the climate crisis, and now it’s time to go back to our roots.
In this episode of Spotlight we look at regenerative agriculture as a potential way forward.
We’d love to know your thoughts on this topic! Let us know in the comments below.
Spotlight is a 12-part series on climate solutions created in collaboration with Earthrise and Bloomberg Originals.

One aspect of regenerative farming I was surprised not to see covered in this one, is how it requires a global increase in plant-based meals to be able to supply the demand. I'm sure we can all agree that factory farming is abhorrent, and the world would be a better place without it - but to make that world possible, we have to reduce the amount of animals we consume. I always feel like this is absolutely key in uniting the farming community with the environmental community. The two can and must go hand-in-hand!

The problem with that is there isn't enough farm land to support a mostly plant-based diet for the majority of humanity. Take a soybean plant. We can only consume the actual bean while animals such as a cow, can eat the entire plant. Even if we reduce the number of animals we consume, not all pasture land is suited for farming. And the fact is, commercial farming reduces the quality of the land, while pasture or prairie land helps to reduce erosion. There needs to be a balance that just won't be achieved by eliminating animal-based proteins. Also one big thing is that the levels of methane animals produce has been grossly overestimated. Agriculture produces a little less than half of total methane levels and of that, animal waste produces maybe 10% of total methane emissions. If we really want to reduce methane levels, we need to look at clean energy and better waste management.

as long the cattle eat gras, without cemical nitrogen fertilizer, the carbon in methan (which will be decomposed to co2 after serveral years) is plantbased and co2-neutral. the main source of greenhouse gas in agriculture ist fuel and chemical fertilizer from fossiel energy sources

2.6 milllion trees might sound a lot bet even at 5m apart that is only that is only 5km by 13km , that is only a fraction of the 15 Billion we cut down every year including in wild habitats. They will take around 20 or 30 years to absorb any appreciable amount of carbon. We need to be planting billions of trees and preserving huge areas of virgin forests and habitats. A global climate emergency taken seriously would see us planting 2 to 3 *trillion* trees to create rich habitat. Such a scale would need serious input from a range of ecologists and specialists that we do not have in place.

Regenerative farming is a beautiful solution, but we have to understand why and how those farmers were able to change before blaming those who haven't yet. And assess whether that practice is suitable or possible for other farmers in their own context. This video neglects key nuances in the methane debate, like the short carbon cycle versus long carbon cycle. Much of this video are cries and "solutions" we've heard before. There are many more farming styles than regenerative (which is actually a primary focus on soil health), like biodynamic, biodiverse, agroecology, etc. All of which have the capacity for positive environmental impact. There is no silver bullet. Use your platform to highlight niche solutions and inspire. Don't make people feel more helpless with things we hear constantly or have already heard. Also funny to label the cow with the "unsustainable meal" stamp. Many cows are critical in regenerative farming of grasslands. 🤦🏻‍♀️

You talked about the restore, but what about the not exploits? Industrial agriculture is incredibly exploitative for workers. Farming techniques aren't enough. Paying living wages and securing human rights to our most valuable workers is the minimum of what we should do.

This is so disappointing. Farmers are feeding our nation. They’re working hard, they’re being under paid and unfairly treated in the system. I work on dairy farms - less stress less farts just isn’t true. This is scare mongering. I agree that we need to protect our planet, correct legislation is being put in place to hold farmers accountable to this. But this video is soooo far off. You make it sounds like an easy and fast solution, when the production on meat and milk for example is needed. People need to shop local. Our government needs to do deals with OUR farmers, not deals with NZ and Oz for cheaper, less legislated meat/products being flown thousands of miles across the earth. Really one sided, disappointing video.

Agreed but he at least touches on regenerative agriculture at the end. The fear in the beginning is very misleading and one-sided.

Go vegan. Less farm animals = less methane. Not the perfect solution but it will be a big help for our planet.
