How Fast Can I Melt Aluminum Cans? 2 Bags Full Into Pure Aluminum Ingots

Today I'm melting 2 bags full of aluminum cans and seeing how long this will take. I'm using my propane foundry and a devil-forge burner to melt these cans down into pure aluminum ingots. Melting aluminum cans is totally worth it to me. It's a free source and readily available. I'll be using these ingots later and remelting them down to turn them into artwork for future projects. If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up and hit that Subscribe button.

I always have a ton of cans to melt, still working on crushing a small trailer load of cans I acquired. Been having to much fun sand casting Daggers and such. Need to do some ingots and make some more Aluminum Bronze. Great vid, keep em coming..

I cant remember if I've mentioned it to you or not, and if I did it wasn't under this new account anyway LOL... but watching you, bigstackD, and VegOilGuy inspired me to get back into metal casting after many, many years of not doing it. Tonight was actually the inaugural lightoff of my little Devil Forge, the same small one that bigstack recently got and reviewed. I'm pleased to report that there were no injuries, and I have some nice little aluminum muffins cooling out in the garage as I type this. :-) Thanks for another great video, and thanks for the inspiration!

I saw one guy on You Tube grind up the cans first, in a metal shredder, then used a scoop to feed the scraps into the kiln. He could fit more in each time, quicker, and it melted faster. Made sense, but that shredder had to cost a lot.

Adrock, how long does the aluminum sit in your mold prior to you dumping them out? I always wondered this, with edits, it usually seems instantaneous! Great video's brother!
@ArtByAdrock
@ArtByAdrock 5 лет назад
Thank you 🙏 it probably stays in the mold for maybe a minute. Just long enough to harden. Some molds have a tendency to stick more than others. The ones I was using are cast iron so they’re not real smooth at all.

@jasonwright1687

Pour 3 was very smooth. May I make a suggestion? Try to be sure you rinse out all cans before you crush them, and let dry obviously, and remove tabs and set aside. Put a smidge of borax in each can before you put in the crucible, this will help keep metal and dross or slag as separated as possible. Less metal being removed with the slag. Then, make sure to burn the molds with yellow flames, not blue. Common misconception is that you need to pre heat molds. Nope, you need the finite layer of soot in there.... That's what helps the ingots slide out with ease. Don't forget to re-soot after every use. Also, if you take the refined aluminum and then keep melting and purifying, eventually you will have aircraft grade, or pretty much PURE aluminum. 😉 then, you could make something out of it like a knife or sword, and it will have amazing tinsil strength.
@ArtByAdrock
@ArtByAdrock 5 лет назад
Yeah I always take the tabs off and let them dry. Didn’t know about the yellow flames. Thanks for the suggestion 👍🏻

In bullet molding you use the flame from a candle to coat the molds with black then the lead falls off. It may work with the aluminum molds. A dirty flame from kerosene or tiki torch might work.

A lot of people choose to treat their cast iron molds with PAM. I use bear grease. But it helps the ingots slide out of the molds easier and gives a nice smooth finish.

What is the yield by weight on melting the cans? I melted a trash can full of crushed can but didn't weight the cans or the propane tank before and after. My gut feeling was that I used more gas than the ingots were worth.
@ArtByAdrock
@ArtByAdrock 5 лет назад
Selling the ingots is not worth it at a scrap for what you get and some places won’t even take the ingots because they aren’t sure if they’re pure, however like me ill turn the ingots into some other art piece and sell that so then it would be worth it 👍🏻

Please do your self a favor and make a distance between the Crucible and the water, bubbling water and molten aluminum is not good, a explosion of hot metals will cause scars. It's a waste of time and propane to melt cans they are not very good for casting like all extruded aluminum they have a lot of shrinkage and don't flow into the details of the mold well save your time and energy sell them for scrap .if you want to make good castings use aluminum castings they are alloyed for that purpose and cast a lot better
