After ripping the boom vang out of the mast, we haven't had the opportunity to really test out how good at sailing our new boat is. With all the recent engine upgrades and repairs complete, we are setting off once more on a 140 nautical mile sail down to Pangkor marina to collect some more items for the new boat!
With some light conditions on day one, we sailed as a cutter rig to windward and enjoyed the smooth fast sailing. The folowing day a building sea and stronger winds aft of the beam, meant we were flying and sailing into the double digits!!

That was so much fun to watch!! Buy a boat on the hard for years,work you butts off to get her ready to sail,break some more stuff,fix said stuff and sail again to find out she’s a beast in light winds and sails wonderfully!!! While little Tilulah is privelidged to have this amazing life it is still very restricted for a liitle human and the fact she is able to amuse herself in such a confined space is a credit to her and you two in the way she is being raised, she will be down to earth and know right from wrong I am sure. Absolutely love you guys and proud to be an Aussie (gotta claim a little bit of credit!!!!!)

Well done Nandji 11. She looks great. In those conditions, with a little more sail she can do 12 knots. Go for it, even just once man. An old deceased friend of mine, the best yachtsman I have ever seen, said, the only time you slow down is when you are about to drop anchor , or, there is no wind. 48 foot was the right choice (or 47 - whatever). I enjoy you adventures with some envy. Go kindly dear family.

She looks great undersail with full sails up. We added a hydrovane to our 48DS tayana. Works wonderful. I noticed you had a number of people helping you dock, we find tying the stern first helps. Not sure if you do that. We also have a bow thruster. Love watching your videos.

Speed in light winds is more about the ratio of sail area to wetted surface area. As the wind increases the speed is more about the ratio of displacement to waterline length. My boat is 18 tons, but has an 18m (60ft) waterline. This means it has a D/L ratio of 90 and will commonly do 200nm and more in a day. Your D/L is more like 250 or even 280 or more when fully loaded, so the boat will load up more in more wind and reach a limit somewhere around 8 knots average or just below. Of course you can exceed that for short bursts but it will be very unusual to exceed say 185-190 miles a day. Such is physics. A code zero ( a close reaching sail, say 60⁰-110⁰ TWA) is another way to up your light wind speed.
