Appreciate you putting this out there. I often talk to relative beginners on the chair lift and when they hear how long I've been riding they ask why I'm not riding the black diamond lift. The forces you feel springing from one turn to the next are amazing...and incredibly difficult to manage on the super steep terrain. Going fast doesn't really feel impressive in the same way. I went skydiving and was disappointed with freefalling because once you reach terminal velocity there isn't anymore exciting acceleration. It's the sharp changes of direction while carving that feel great. Do what feels good; no hate. If you like straight line bombing do it (safely)...as for me, I love to carve and love the vids. Keep shreddin'

100%! :D There's certain sensations of going over rollers and such that feel pretty cool at enjoyable speeds. But otherwise, just like your skydiving experience... if there isn't other physics involved... it just feels windy. 🌬

@@RyanKnapton Funny you should say that! All my friends asked about my skydiving experience and I told them it was like driving on the interstate without a windshield...it was almost hard to breathe, but not in any exciting sort of way :-p The first 7 seconds are awesome because it's disorienting...you've moving faster forward than downward, but your brain says whatever direction is fast must be down (of course that's constantly changing in the first few seconds). The last part once the chute is open is when it's like carving...using the toggles to exert big forces while changing directions feels great...basically the part I thought would be best was by far the most boring.

@@FierceTable Pretty sure my fear of heights would make it very adrenaline-pumping for me, that's why I'm planning on actually skydiving soon :D Although I definitely get what you mean, maybe riding in like a plane looping and doing fast changes would be smth for you? Then you get the pulling in different directions etc. Perfect carves are just something different in my experience and I cant really compare it to anything

Hey Ryan I was able to grab one of the last few tickets to this event. I'm from VA but I'm doing a cross country road trip (currently ripping up Lutsen, MN before heading to the Tetons) and I'm really lucky y'all are doing the event when and where you are! I wanted to say thank you. I've been snowboarding my whole life, but after college I took a break of about 8 years and just got back into it this season because I saw your style and the board and realized I could finally softboot carve again with a donek. I wear a size 14, so each season as I got older my experience actually got worse, until this year I got a 162 Knapton Twin, 30.5cm waist, 9.2m sidecut. Now I'm able to carve in both directions with no drag, and I'm working on FS/BS 180 butters currently. My style and my experience on the mountain has totally changed and it almost feels like a new sport! Just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration and your style will live on as long as there is snow around! See you out at turner for the event!

Yesterday i rode a red full speed with minor direction adjustments. Think i hit 50mph as my jacket was telling me things. I was the first person off the first chair double footed and on a mission to get to the main gondola.. 20 to 40cm of fresh snow on the piste was a dream. Second decent of that run the normal speed for daily riding, carving and buttering looking for jibs.. 5mph to 25mph is plenty. With crowds and discombobulated snow turning to mogels you couldn't ride flat out. Respect others and yourself stay safe while being dangerous. I came off the hill early as was shattered and being tired is also dangerous. Arrive with stoke, leave with more stoke. 🧡

The pistes in the alps in are a LOT steeper so skidded turns often are a way of surviving and being able to control speed. Often if it is like that and we have a fast crew I. Ryan - in my 3rd season of riding and in the 45+ year old club and one thing I’ve learned (maybe because I am older), I simply like carving. Bombing it down the hill, simply isn’t my thing and frankly, feels like a poor usage of time. I’ve been looking at boards and saw one your Donek boards for sale that I am considering. I guess my biggest question with making the leap from a 25.3cm waist to say a 27cm with a 9m side cut, what should I expect/plan for? I assume there will be a learning curve but it seems like carving and wide boards simply go hand in hand. Love the vids, love my side slip hoodie. Keep it up brotha!

I love both carving and bombing. I think bombers get a bad rap because of irresponsible riders. Fast unsafe. Period. "Fast" is relative to skill level whereas irresponsibility is absolute. If you like to bomb runs then wait for a clear enough run, even if that means sitting up at the top for a while and getting a cold butt.

Love the vids. Got a question for the carve master, no one does it better. So my ski buddy commented that i wasn’t going as fast this year. I hadn’t really thought about it, but my edge confidence is dropping. I’m going back to skidded turns, exhausting on the legs. It’s hard for me to tell the snow conditions, my slopes are extremely variable: hard pack, ice, soft shaved snow all in 20 feet. Even moderate speeds cover 20ft / sec = 13 miles per hour. Any advice welcome. Keep up the vids. Side note. Insta 360 is awesome. Best footage ever. No more missed shots with 360 footage the whole time. A must for riding with a buddy, super fun to switch focus back and forward between two riders and matrix like edit by slowing footage and rotating the field of view. If you play with the angle you can keep both riders in the same screen, head trip to watch. Keep up the great work

I’d say the fastest I’d ever gone during a carve would be around 60 mph. That being said I was running a 15 m side cut on a race board. I’d say 45 mph would be the fastest I’ve carved on a soft boot setup with burton Swath’s and union force bindings on a lib tech skunkape. I feel that personal maximum flexion and snow conditions play an absolutely massive role in your ability to carve faster down pistes less so binding and boot setups.

@sjx2321
@sjx2321 Год назад
Hey Ryan, love your style and videos. Noob question although been snowboarding a couple years: how tight should the boots be for a good carving? I cannot find the sweet spot for me. Either I tighten everything up too hard, a lot extra torque in my ankle and knee; or I loosen them too much, and lack of control during edge transition.
@projectadd7418
@projectadd7418 Год назад
If tightening your feet into your bindings is putting torque on your ankles and knees, the first thing I'd look at is your stance angles. Different people's feet naturally point in different directions, and it sounds like your bindings are not set up well for you.
@sjx2321
@sjx2321 Год назад
@@projectadd7418 Thanks! I've been testing different angle setups this season, went 12/--12 to 15/0 to 15/-9. Will try new angles as you adviced. I'm just not sure which part is causing (the most of) my discomfort: new boots breaking in, angle setup, rusty skill, lack of strength. Except for trial and error like a alchemist, is there any systematic way that helps finding the right setup for me?
@projectadd7418
@projectadd7418 Год назад
I don't know of any specific science to it, but I'd say if your feet point in when you walk, adjust your angles closer together, and if your feet point out when you walk, adjust your angles further apart. You seem like you're in the range of someone who's feet point straight, so if that's the case, maybe it's not the angles. My feet point straight and I ride 15/-15. I ride switch a lot so I like to keep them balanced. I think most people who ride only one direction bias their bindings in that direction. If it's not the bindings, another possibility is posture. If you ride with you shoulders really open (90 degrees off from your board or close) that could be another source of torque on your joints. Tommy Bennett and Malcolm Moore are two guys to watch who focus on posture a lot. Hopefully you get it figured out!
@hsidder

Always appreciate your wisdom and insight. 2nd year rider here and am focusing more on carving and safety, less about speed. Toe side carves feel great, edge engages but I find myself skidding more on my heel side, cannot seem to get my edge to engage even with my high backs set. Any suggestions?
@RyanKnapton
@RyanKnapton Год назад
It's so tough to know without seeing it. From the equipment standpoint: If you think there is a possibility your dragging the heel of the boots or binding heelcup on those heelside turns, then try shifting the bindings towards the toeside on a good snow day, and see if that helps clean it up. And on the bindings, placing a good amount of forward lean on the adjuster is key. Without it, heelside carves feel like stepping in dogshit. Otherwise, while on the hill, see how slow you can try them. Really finishing that previous toeside turn to set it all up nicely. Good luck!
@hsidder
@hsidder Год назад
Thanks Ryan! Forward lean is set to max (and I don’t find it uncomfortable ironically) and I don’t have heel drag. I suspect it’s bad body position and will keep at it.
@extravaganza69

@@RyanKnapton when you say max forward lean is it set to match the boots shape or its even more and you crunch the boot to max lean for bindings?

Transition then grip the snow with front foot weight opening hips and knee Then very quickly once you’re into the carve backside posture balance weight exactly over both feet for the whole turn, lean with a bit of speed, trust your edge, and force yourself to pull your toes upward you should feel it in your front calf muscle Gl
@grimmriffer
@grimmriffer Год назад
Assuming it's a technique thing, here's a coupla things to try. Make sure you're letting the edge drive the turn, not kicking the board round. Twist to look where you want to be going, just not down the hill. If you look down the hill, you'll skid down the hill instead of carving across. And this is a weird one seems to work for me - trying to point the rear knee towards the nose. I think it actually just opens my posture towards the nose.
