We live 100% off of firewood, we cook with it we heat with it and we have hot water via firewood.
We ususally split up Red and White oak also Hickory and other hard woods. Thanks for watching

About OFF GRID with DOUG and Stacy
In 2010 we decided to sell everything and build a log cabin on 11 acres. We have lived in the log cabin for a decade now with no solar power or wind power plus zero public utilities. *Off grid living *Rain water catchment *Cooking with wood
*Food growing *Cooking from scratch *Raised bed gardening
*Food harvesting *fermenting the harvest *food preservation
*Holistic Remedies like Grandma made *How to make money and live this life
*storing food in a root cellar *DIY Build projects

It takes a little bit of playing to get the conveyor in the right position. The aluminum pan on your machine is a bit longer than normal. It looks like you're doing great doug. Really appreciate all the support

Thanks for the tips! yea, Im gonna pull it back a little more and see how it feeds. Plus I'm still learning the machine and the heads. Great Stuff and Thanks for everything

@@OFFGRIDwithDOUGSTACY I think if you can lower the conveyor a little that would help. That it why pulling the splitter back has helped, not as much of a pinch point.

If the wood could drop off onto the conveyor would be the best.
@ronalldsquire699
@ronalldsquire699 2 года назад
If you fill in the back of the conveyor to the height of sides and raise the log breaker and extend the tray so that it is sloping down Onto the conveyor it would not choke up like it is now

Had to show hubby this, we cut and split our own wood. The old splitter was at least 45 years old, finally gave out so early this month we had to get a new one, which we sure appreciate. With him running the splitter and me stacking, we can generate enough wood for a week in 30 minutes, We feel pretty proud as I am 71 and he is 68.
@tinanieves9881

What kind of splitter do you use? I'm 60, my husband 62. He splits all our wood by hand using an axe. I'm disabled so I can't help much. Its getting to be too much.
@carolmalko615
@carolmalko615 2 года назад
You should be proud! I also would like to know what kind of new splitter you got. Was it new or used? My husband and I are moving onto a homestead this summer that is wooded so we will be doing a lot of this kind of work. Well... it's a mother/daughter.... but we are both turning 72 this year! I'm hoping the next 2 generations do most of the work, lol! We all plan on heating with the woodstoves alone.

@@carolmalko615 We got the only gas splitter Lowes had already assembled. We were under the gun, we had 1 day before 8+ inches of snow and ice were coming and it was 1pm when the old splitter died. Cost about $1,400 and well worth it. We wanted a cheap electric to do until hubby could fix the old one, but there were none to be had. As it turns out there is too much repair on the old one so good thing we got the new one. We get our wood from the 2 local mulch pits. The trick is - always work wood when the weather is good so you won't get stuck with no wood and a blizzard coming in. Work about 30 minutes at a time, take a break, then go at it again - this way you do not overdo to the point now you can't do anything for a week. Learn your wood types and how they split - you need a mix of hard slow burning and soft kick out the heat woods. When I bring in a load of wood from outside, I sit it on the top of the woodstove so it dries out a bit, then stack it in the indoors rick. I discovered "fatwood" for starter kindling and love it! Good luck on homesteading, it can be a lot of work!
@billfearheller4179
@billfearheller4179 2 года назад
also Doug, close the bucket on the conveyor so the wood cannot fall back and out on the ground. Lower the angle on the conveyor and shorten the flap on the conveyor so the wood gets hooked by the cross flights sooner..just a little. Be well and stay safe, bf

Doug: I think you might split a 50 gallon drum and mount it over the splitter part of that thing it would make the wood push the wood ahead of it onto your conveyor for you. Also leaving less to pick up and toss onto the conveyor. Just a thought.

Just found your channel. Going back to watch your previous episodes and have subscribed. I’m 75 and I lived the life style you and your wife have chosen except we got minimal electricity when I was about 2 or 3. Like your wood splitter. I was the splitter with an axe. Elms developed a disease and died so that was our supply of firewood for too many years. The grain on elm is twisted so it doesn’t split it tears so very difficult. Like your content. Best to you and your wife.

Seems like lowering the angle of the conveyor a foot or two at the top end would keep the split wood from falling out the sides. Yes that will make your pile lower and use up more storage area but everything's always a trade off.

A couple of things that I’ve learned over the years. One is keep all the rounds the same size like two or three different piles with bigger stuff little stuff medium stuff that are all about the same size you don’t have to raise and lower your wedge as much you get much more even size pieces. It will also fit easier onto your conveyor. I haven’t quite got the conveyor splitter figured out yet either and I’ve been doing this a long time seems like I always have it up too steep or too shallow from the splitter. Two When you’re loading your logs on your log leftAnd you get your four or five on there depending on their size I grab one and throw it on the splitter that’s speeds up your time a lot. I couldn’t believe how much faster it made things just that one extra piece of wood every time that lift comes up. Of course you can’t do it if the rounds are too big but when you can it really helps out the process. Great video really enjoyed it
