These cars were amazing for the era they came from. They developed everything but never explored wider tires for handling.

Great video - thank you for that! I find the old racing cars the most interesting and am always fascinated. Speaking of which: which flight simulator did you show there? (11:40)

You're welcome! 😁 I think this era deserves some kind of film or docufilm. I know mercedes have done a brilliant documentary on this subject over on their channel which I recommend to watch. That was War Thunder, I've been playing alot lately in my spare time & slowly getting better flying in vr as it was quite difficult at first 😅. I've been considering doing a video on it in the near future so look out for that!

@@MotorMad Yes, great! Thank you for your hint. I'll try War Thunder too... By the way, I bought and paid for a racetrack at "Historic Sim Studios", but nothing happened - no link to download, or anything like that... :-/ Good luck to you and I look forward to more videos from you!

@@larsk.613 Thank you! I know they are doing some indy car tracks plus others in collaboration with Sergio Loro but they haven't been released yet as they are still in development. Pinned at the top of the patreon page is a list of mods available to download. I'm sure Daniel at Historic Sim Studios will be able to help you with any enquiries if you gave him at shout at his channel or patreon page🙂

I have now received an email with a download link. This must have been done by hand and I'm very happy to have a great new circuit! :D

It seems like only 140 mph would be a low-ball figure, even for the Bugatti Type 59, certainly the Alfa Romeo P3. And I'd think the Maserati 8CM would would be fairly close to the Alfa. And yeah, seeing the first comparison listing, it doesn't make sense to me how the Alfa is slower in the top end than the Bugatti, honestly. Looking again, um, are you sure that was the Bugatti Type 41? If so, I seriously have to wonder if something is wrong. The Type 51 definitely shouldn't be able to outpace the P3. And if the Type 51 really can do a 140 mph, then the Type 59, P3, and 8CM should all be good for 150-155 mph, maybe 160 mph. The Auto Union Type C has a 6.0-liter V16, producing, depending on the source, 520-545 hp. The Auto Union is supposed to have 5 gears. Btw, is the Auto Union Type A not yet available for early access? The W125 has a 5.7-liter Straight-8 engine, and yeah, depending on the source, it gives anywhere from 575-650 hp. The Mercedes really brute-forces it, whereas the Auto Union was of a more advanced design, and so had a better chassis and less frontal area. The big thing both German GP cars had was they were torque monsters beyond anything else out there. They made 600-700 ft-lb of torque, and did so well below redline. They weren't allowed to be more than 750 kilos when empty. The streamliners were built for Class B speed record attempts, but they did run special version of the cars here at AVUS. The Mercedes-Benz W196 Streamliner was used at Monza and Reims in 1954-55. I suspect the increased weight with all that bodywork helps keep it under control. Actually, it was Lang's Mercedes that tried to fly at AVUS in 1937. That 210-mph figure does seem like it's on the low side. Um, you didn't shift up to 4th in the Merc streamliner. It doesn't hurt that there was a version of that car with a 5.6-liter V12, and some sources claim a power figure of ~750 hp. The Mercedes Streamliner definitely has more frontal area than the Auto Union. As a final side note, the Alfa Romeo P3 pseudo-streamliner that won the 1934 Avusrennen has a claimed top speed of ~170 mph.

Same here. I'm very much surprised to see those readings as well... Even the early 1932-spec P3s with 2.6L 215bhp engine should be able to do around 150+mph, considering the fact that it can keep up with monsters such as the Bugatti Type 59 and the Maserati V5 even in fast tracks... All the cars were also timed at a section of the Monte Silvano straight at the 1934 Coppa Acerbo. Though there's a persistent corsswind that would've prevented the cars from fully reaching their speeds, especially if they were not so stable at higher speeds... An 8C Monza was timed doing around 140mph, and considering that the Bugatti Type 51 is roughly similar in performance to an 8C Monza, it's fair to expect the same top speed for a Type 51... Tazio Nuvolari in the fastest 8CM and Antonio Brivio in the solitary Bugatti Type 59 was both timed doing around 150mph... And Louis Chiron in a 1934-spec P3, was timed doing up to 169mph... I think the only way to make a P3 max out at 140mph is to use the lowest gear ratios available and put 6.50x16 rear tires on it...

I'm not sure, I haven't actually played around with the setup on the W25 streamlined. I should check next time I drive it!
